Security Mutual Week begins in Binghamton
Mayor Jared Kraham raised the flag and declared it Security Mutual week in the city Monday morning.
The annual event recognizes the life insurance company for its commitment to our area, including its annual donation of hanging flower baskets to beautify the downtown.
This week, more than 100 key distributors and employees will be in town participating in the company's Advanced Marketing Seminar for the first time since the pandemic.
President and CEO Kirk Gravely says Security Mutual's local legacy dates back to its founding in 1886.
'We are proud of our contributions to the community. And even as we expand across the country, we will never lose sight of our commitment to this great city. Binghamton is our home and for that, we are extremely proud,' said Gravely.
Among the company's other charitable efforts are the Jim 'Mudcat' Grant Legacy All-Star Golf Tournament, which raises funds for local non-profits. And the Sock Out Cancer initiative, which has raised $1.8 million to support cancer patients since its founding in 2017.
This year's fundraising concert featuring Beatles and Rolling Stones tribute bands is scheduled for October 18 at the Forum Theater.

Jim Cramer looks at how 2 of our high-flying tech stocks crushed Wall Street naysayers
The bears got it wrong on both Meta Platforms and CrowdStrike . Needham walked back a prior call on Meta — upgrading the Club stock to a hold from a sell equivalent rating, which had stood since July 2022. No price target was given. The lead analyst on Thursday's note, Laura Martin, said her prior rating and thesis were "based on rapidly rising Reality Labs losses and cost increases from more GenAI FTEs (full-time employees) and higher [capital expenditure] spending." While both "negatives came true," Martin added, they were "more than offset by META's strong rev growth and the fact that META fired (and then replaced) about 25% of its total FTEs between Nov 2022 and 2025, which aided its labor productivity metrics." META YTD mountain Meta Platforms YTD Jim Cramer on Thursday attributed Meta's success to a "great model," which he has touted for years. First of all, the Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp parent company does not pay for content. "I'll go one step further," Jim added. "They have used AI in a way that is so fabulous that really no one's ever experienced" in advertising. Meta, which has been on a massive artificial intelligence worker hiring spree , has capitalized on AI to allow companies to create their own ads and hyper-target their messages to audiences on some of the biggest social media platforms in the world. AI at Meta is also used to serve those audiences with content relevant to their interests. While Jim respects Martin, who is also well-regarded on the Street, he said her Meta call was "really bad," with Meta shares soaring more than 340% since the July 11, 2022, sell call at around the $160s. For the rest of 2022, however, it had looked like a great call as Meta and other tech stocks and the entire market, for that matter, were crushed that year. But 2023 and 2024 were banner years for stocks — and so far this year, Meta shares surged nearly 23%. From its 2025 closing low of $484 on April 21, the stock has surged more than 50%, and it logged a record-high close of $738 on Monday. Last week, we raised our Club price target on Meta to $800 from $700. Jim also included Meta as one of the "Ms" in his newest acronym , "MNM." Club names Nvidia and Microsoft represent the others. Meta has been part of Jim's Charitable Trust, the portfolio used by the CNBC Investing Club, since May 2014. It's currently the third-biggest stock by weighting in the Trust. Despite what they describe as "channel checks driving upside to our estimates," Martin and her team are still cautious, saying they are only going to a hold rating, not a buy, due to various factors, including growth in capex and costs, as well as valuation. They did say, "We would likely get more positive about META just above $600," which implies more than 11.5% downside from Thursday close. CRWD YTD mountain CrowdStrike YTD Some investors thought CrowdStrike shares would be in for a difficult stretch after the cybersecurity company's botched software update on July 19, 2024, which caused a global information technology outage and crushed the stock. "There were a lot of people who felt this company was finished," Jim said Thursday. "I salute George [Kurtz]," Jim added, crediting the CEO for his tireless efforts to reassure clients after the outage, which resulted in a minimal loss of customers. The Club watched as CrowdStrike stock recovered, and we initiated a position at around $300 per share back in October . Most recently, the Club booked some profits in CrowdStrike on June 24 out of respect for its huge move higher, but our belief in the company for the long haul has not wavered. In fact, three days after that trim, we increased our price target on the stock to $520 from $500. Nearly one year since the IT outage, there are many more believers in CrowdStrike. However, the average analyst price target was still nearly 9% current levels, according to CNBC Pro data. Like Jim, Wedbush has been a long-time bull — and on Thursday, raised its CrowdStrike target price to $575 from $525 — a 12% premium to Thursday's record-high close of $514. The analysts team, led by Dan Ives, said CrowdStrike remains one of its favorite tech names. Wedbush maintained its outperform buy rating. "We believe increased market and mind share is happening for CrowdStrike among new and existing customers as the company's product suite continues to expand across the enterprise landscape over the next 12 to 18 months," the analysts wrote. They also praised CrowdStrike's AI integration across its portfolio to capitalize on demand for more sophisticated cyber solutions to protect against malware attacks. Cramer sees jobs data as a win for Fed's Powell over Trump — plus, possible stocks to trim
1. The S & P 500 was on track for another record-high close in Thursday's shortened trading session. The government's June jobs report was strong, with better-than-expected nonfarm payroll growth and a lower-than-expected unemployment rate. Jim Cramer said that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's wait-and-see approach to interest rates was proven correct again. Even if the economy and jobs are not as good as recent numbers indicate, there is certainly nothing Jim has seen lately that calls for an immediate Fed rate cut, as President Donald Trump has been demanding. In a Wednesday night social media post, the president called for Powell to resign, which raised questions about whether the jobs numbers might be weak. They were not. The U.S. stock market is closed for the Fourth of July on Friday. 2. The stock market became even more overbought after Wednesday's session, according to the S & P Short Range Oscillator , the momentum gauge that Jim has trusted for decades. In overbought markets, we start to look around in our portfolio for places to trim and take profits. Jim and Jeff Marks, director of portfolio analysis for the Club, talked about Broadcom and bank stocks as possibilities. To be sure, we trimmed Broadcom on Wednesday and booked big profits. But it just keeps going higher, and Jim said we don't want to be greedy. Jeff brought up Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo . He pointed out that they were among the largest-weighted positions due to our buying and their strong rallies. Jim and Jeff said they will be thinking about what to do over the long weekend. 3. Citi raised its price target on Club stock DuPont to $85 from $75, implying more than 16% upside to Wednesday's close. The analysts also opened an "upside 90-day catalyst watch" on DuPont ahead of expectations for solid earnings and September investor days for the planned electronics spin-off and the remaining company. There are media reports about private equity looking to buy $2 billion of DuPont assets, namely Kevlar and Nomex safety brands. "The stock has been a disappointment," Jim said on Thursday. Jim and Jeff will be talking about all of the Club's stock holdings during our Annual Meeting for members, one week from Friday. Why Jim Cramer is not ready to blame AI for this year's Microsoft's layoffs
Microsoft on Wednesday announced its biggest round of layoffs this year — aimed at driving efficiencies and taking advantage of new technologies. Jim Cramer is not ready to blame AI for the job cuts. The software giant said it plans to reduce its global workforce by less than 4%, which translates to about 9,000 positions. It announced hundreds of job cuts in June and more than 6,000 in May . Roughly 1% of its workforce was eliminated in January based on performance. "The typical interview we have is how much of these layoffs are AI?" Jim noted on " Squawk on the Street " as the news was breaking. But he stressed that the real reasons for Microsoft's layoffs and others are that many companies have "too many people and they're trying to make the quarter." Microsoft did not directly explain its latest round of cuts, but a spokesperson told CNBC tech reporter Steve Kovach the tech giant continues to "implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace." Kovach reported that Microsoft employees will be spending more time focusing on meaningful work by leveraging new technologies and capabilities. Kovach said that sentiment could be a reference to artificial intelligence or Copilot, the company's digital AI-powered assistant. D.A. Davison analyst Gil Luria said Microsoft is certainly trying to control costs. But he added that increases in productivity from the use of AI tools do put the company in a good position to comfortably make large job cuts in a short period. "Microsoft is managing its costs very carefully right now in order to balance investment with continued margin growth. The huge investment in data center capital expenditures is putting pressure on margins, and Microsoft has been able to offset that pressure by holding down personnel growth." Luria also told CNBC that "fortunately for Microsoft, they have been able to leverage new AI tools to increase productivity enough to be able to achieve higher output with less employees." On Wednesday, D.A. Davidson raised its Microsoft price target to $600 per share from $500 — implying 22% upside to Tuesday's close of $492, which was just shy of the stock's June 26 record-high close. Luria and his colleagues cited runway for growth in Microsoft's Azure cloud business and an expansion of its lead in AI. They were especially encouraged after an outstanding fiscal 2025 third quarter that quieted critics of its AI strategy and concerns about its fraying relationship with OpenAI. Microsoft shares have been soaring since their 52-week low of $344 on April 7 on tariff tensions. When President Donald Trump announced a pause in "reciprocal" levies two days later, Microsoft ripped 10% higher. Nearly two weeks later, shares nearly revisited those lows before climbing through the end of April, May, and June — hitting an all-time intraday high above $500 on Monday. On Tuesday evening's episode of "Mad Money," Jim included Microsoft, along with Club names Nvidia and Meta Platforms , in his newly revealed acronym, MNM. "Not FANG. Not 'Magnificent Seven.' Just M-N-Ms," Jim said on the show. There are the "sole survivors of a brutal quarter from what used to be the most captivating group in the market."
