Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann asks youth to find inspiration in sporting icons Milkha Singh and Harmanpreet Kaur, not singers whose lyrics promote drugs
2
Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister
Bhagwant Mann
on Saturday advised youngsters to find inspiration in sporting icons like
Milkha Singh
, hockey Olympians Harmanpreet and Manpreet Singh, and cricketer
Harmanpreet Kaur
, rather than singers who promote drug use in their songs.
Speaking at the 'Walk for Drug-Free Chandigarh' event along with Haryana counterpart Nayab Singh Saini and Punjab and Haryana governors Gulab Chand Kataria and Bandaru Dattatraya, Mann also invoked freedom fighters Bhagat Singh and Kartar Singh Sarabha in his appeal for shunning drugs. "Taking inspiration from them, Punjab is today prepared towards making the country free from the scourge of drugs," he said.
He appealed to students to promptly report any drug-related approaches to their parents or teachers and to reject the glorification of drugs in pop culture.
The CM asserted that Punjab will lead the nation in achieving a drug-free society, much like the freedom struggle. He said his govt intensified its
anti-drug campaign
with strict enforcement, community engagement, and youth awareness programmes to break the supply chain of drugs and rehabilitate victims. He also outlined his govt's multi-pronged strategy to tackle the issue, involving strict enforcement, community participation, and youth awareness programmes.

Emphasising the crucial role of youth in building a
drug-free Punjab
, Mann motivated children to become flag bearers in the fight against drugs, stressing that the social evil should be eradicated to ensure a brighter future.
Mann said that the state government already snapped the supply line of drugs and big fishes involved in the drug trade were put behind bars. He said that for the first time, the property of the drug smugglers acquired illegally is being destroyed by the state govt so that it acts as a deterrent for others.

Why Columbia's deal with Trump could drive international students away
Columbia agrees to report student arrests under new US government deal. (File Photo) Columbia University's recent settlement with the Trump administration has sparked concern across the academic sector due to the introduction of new monitoring and reporting requirements for international students. The agreement, made public through university sources and media reports, includes obligations that significantly expand Columbia's role in policing non-US student populations on campus. As part of the settlement, Columbia will pay $221 million and adopt stricter oversight measures, including reporting minor student infractions such as trespassing to the federal government. These measures go beyond existing requirements under the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), the US government's platform for monitoring international students. Expanded reporting obligations for Columbia According to a university official cited in the original press release, Columbia will now report arrest information to SEVIS, even in cases that do not result in suspension or expulsion. These infractions include offences like trespassing, which led to the arrest of 78 students during a pro-Palestinian protest at a university library. Previously, such incidents were resolved internally and did not involve federal authorities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo In an official statement issued by Columbia and referenced in the press release, the university confirmed: "In addition to those longstanding requirements, Columbia will now also notify the programme if it is made aware of arrest information." The university emphasised that its participation in SEVIS already required it to report disciplinary actions resulting in suspensions or expulsions but acknowledged that this new measure adds further obligations. Concerns over international student recruitment With nearly 40% of its student population coming from outside the US, Columbia is among the top three US institutions with the highest number of international students, as per data from the Institute of International Education. Many of these students pay full tuition fees, contributing significantly to the university's revenue, particularly at the graduate level. William Brustein, a veteran international student officer, stated that "international students and their parents were already hesitant about studying at US colleges," and noted that other countries such as the UK and Australia are viable alternatives. His remarks were included in the original press release. Potential impact across higher education sector The new conditions placed on Columbia may set a precedent for similar agreements at other US universities. Fanta Aw, Executive Director of NAFSA, said the arrest and disciplinary reporting requirement was "outside of the jurisdiction of universities" and warned it "sets a precedent that all institutions should be aware of," as reported in the press release. Acting Columbia President Claire Shipman, in a letter to students and staff, stated that one motivation for reaching the agreement was "the potential revocation of visa status of thousands of international students." She added that Columbia had not agreed to report information beyond what the federal government is legally entitled to access. Ongoing federal investigations at other universities Other institutions have also come under federal scrutiny. The University of Chicago is currently being investigated for its admissions policies regarding international students. Additionally, the US State Department has launched a probe into Harvard's compliance with foreign research programmes. In contrast, Brown University recently reached a settlement with the Trump administration that did not include measures affecting international students. Stephen Yale-Loehr, a former immigration law professor at Cornell University, stated that the implementation of such agreements is critical and that "no matter how this is implemented, it shows international students that Columbia — and other universities that accept similar language — will be less welcoming," as quoted in the press release. Trump tariffs deal $12-billion blow to Indian engineering exports; EEPC eyes market diversification
India's engineering goods exporters are preparing for a substantial impact following US President Donald Trump 's announcement of a 25% tariff and additional penalties on all Indian imports starting August 1. The US is India's largest market for engineering goods, with shipments valued at $19.15 billion in FY25, an increase of 8.7% from $17.62 billion in FY24. Of this, steel, aluminium, and related products account for over 60%—around $12 billion—which now face major reciprocal tariff action. That's a huge blow. Steel, aluminium, and their derivatives—exports of these key items will become costlier, leading to a likely dip in shipments,' said Pankaj Chadha, Chairman, Engineering Export Promotion Council of India ( EEPC ). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo Trump's announcement comes as India and the US were exploring a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) and touting a 'special strategic partnership.' Chadha noted, 'Donald Trump's announcement came as a shock. On one hand, we were about to do a BTA with that country, and all along he was saying our PM is a close friend and US-India relations have a special strategic character, and now this.' He also stressed the unpredictable nature of Trump's trade moves: 'The transactional nature of the US president is such that you have to give something to get something. We have our red lines on dairy and agricultural products, and if both sides respect each other's red lines, then something meaningful and win-win can come out. But we need to see the fine print of the official documents first, and I'm sure a negotiation process will start rolling once that is clear.' Live Events Steel and aluminium in focus Steel and aluminium account for over 60% of India's engineering exports to the US. With the new tariff structure, products such as hot-rolled steel coils, stainless steel products, aluminium sheets, and alloys will face immediate cost escalations, likely eroding their competitiveness in the US market. Industry analysts said the tariff move could also prompt buyers in the US to shift sourcing to suppliers such as Vietnam, Mexico, or domestic US producers. 'Given that Indian steel and aluminium exports operate on tight margins, absorbing a 25% tariff is unviable. The most likely scenario is a drop in shipments and renegotiations of contracts,' said a Mumbai-based metal industry consultant. Chadha said EEPC is already working on mitigation strategies. 'We need to expand our global footprint further into South America—we're very close to signing FTAs with Chile and Peru. We should also double down on Mexico and work toward an agreement there. These three are emerging growth hotspots for engineering goods. We are in active dialogue with the EU as well. Derisking our global exposure holds the key in this tariff-ridden environment, so while our dependence on the US market cannot be completely eliminated, it can certainly be reduced.' He added that agriculture and dairy remain India's clear red lines in trade negotiations: 'We can't give away agriculture and dairy—that's definitely our red line.' For now, the EEPC chief has advised exporters to exercise caution until further clarity emerges. 'My message to engineering players and EEPC members will be: once we know the extent of penalties, we will suggest the roadmap ahead,' he said.
