EXCLUSIVE: Longhorns baseball transfer Kaleb Freeman reflects on his journey to Texas
Since the 2025 campaign came to an end, Longhorns baseball has wasted no time improving their roster. That has led to multiple additions in the transfer portal, including Kaleb Freeman. The former Georgia State is coming off one of the best seasons of his career.
In 51 games for Georgia State, Freeman posted a .358 batting average while driving in 45 runs. He also showed some power, as 42 of his 68 hits went for extra bases. Due to his performance at the plate, the Georgia native was a popular prospect in the portal. While Freeman had plenty of options, his conversations with the Longhorns coaching staff, including former MLB star Troy Tulowitzki, sealed the deal.
"We had so many similar traits," Freeman said. "When we were sitting in his office, he was like, dude, I love the way you play; I love your fire and your passion. I know that you had to scratch and claw for everything you got, and I had to do the same thing. We were able to relate on a bunch of different things that you can't put a price tag on. He showed, along with Coach Schlossnagle and Coach Caine, how much they valued me. That is huge for me because I've been to places I wasn't valued."
When Freeman makes his Longhorns debut, it will make the fourth program he has played for. His college career has included stops at Auburn, North Georgia, and Georgia State. Each stop has presented its own set of challenges that have made Freeman a better player.
"I would say each spot has held its challenges and things I've had to learn," Freeman said." The University of North Georgia was basically like, 'It's time to grow up a little bit.' Auburn was kind of different. I feel like it showed me how to be a better person outside of baseball. It showed me that there is more to life than just baseball. At Georgia State, all the pieces fit together, and all those guys took me under their wing. The only word I have for it is that it was awesome."
Although Freeman's stint at Georgia State was short, he made the most of his time. He was named the 2025 Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year. The honors didn't stop there, as Freeman earned a spot on the 2025 All-Sun Belt 2nd team.
For Freeman, the focus is now building on his stellar 2025 campaign. Freeman's success was due to the freedom he had to be himself under Georgia State's coaching staff.
"I would say the freedom of letting me be the guy who was called to be on the field," said Freeman. " I am a very fiery and passionate guy. Whenever I get the freedom to go out and be that guy, that's when the stats will go up. There were some points in the season last year when I struggled mentally because I was pressing mentally. It took off so much pressure not having to worry about the draft and just focus on this game I love and have gotten to play my entire life."
With Freeman on the roster, Texas is in a good position to end its national title drought.

Chaney Johnson inks deal with Cleveland Cavaliers, becomes fourth Tiger to join the NBA
Johnson becomes the fourth member of the Final Four squad to land an NBA deal. Another member of Auburn's Final Four squad has signed an NBA contract. Chaney Johnson, who was known for being a stellar support for Johni Broome during his time at Auburn, has landed a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Johnson signed an "Exhibit 10" deal with the Cavaliers, meaning that Johnson will make the minimum salary on a one-year contract and will have the chance to earn a roster spot during training camp and the NBA Summer League. Johnson started in just five of the 73 games he played in two years at Auburn, but his impact goes greater than his bench role. Johnson averaged 7.0 points during his time in Auburn, shooting 54% with 4.2 boards per contest. He took a giant step forward last season by scoring 9.1 points and securing 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 56% from the field. His energy and production ensured that Auburn never skipped a beat once star forward Johni Broome exited the floor. Johnson joins Johni Broome, Miles Kelly, and Dylan Cardwell by signing NBA deals this week. Broome was drafted in the second round of the NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, while Kelly and Cardwell signed two-way contracts with the Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings, respectively. The only downside to Johnson signing with Cleveland, however, is that he misses out on being teammates with former Tiger Isaac Okoro. Okoro was traded Saturday to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Lonzo Ball. Steve Sarkisian makes bold statement about Longhorns football
Steve Sarkisian ranks Longhorns football as nations best Since arriving in Austin, Steve Sarkisian has turned the Texas Longhorns into one of the best football programs in the country. That is poised to continue with the top-ranked 2025 recruiting class in the country. The Longhorns have also been busy building for 2026 with 15 commits, two of whom are five-star prospects. Due to the on-field results, Sarkisian is one of the best coaches in the nation. Recently, the Longhorns head coach made an appearance on the '3rd and Longhorn' show and explained why he believes that the Forty Acres is the best place in the country to play college football. "I honestly think this is the best place in the country to come play football at," Sarkisian said. "I firmly believe that, and I think we have the stats, the nuances and the information to back that up," Sarkisian said. "Who's the one school that's gone to back-to-back college football playoffs, back-to-back semifinals? Who's the one school their first year in the SEC that went to the SEC Championship game? Who has the most draft picks in the NFL draft over the last two years? ... Who has last year signed the best class in the country, the year before that a top-three class in the country, the year before that a top-five recruiting class in the country?' Under Sarkisian's leadership, Texas has become a fixture in the College Football Playoff. Last year, they fell two wins short of a national title and are one of the early favorites as the regular season quickly approaches. While football is his specialty, Sarkisian also highlighted where Texas stands academically. "Name another school who's getting compared to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, but on the flip side is getting compared to Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama on the football field," Sarkisian said. While, in the end, Sarkisian's impact will be measured in wins and losses, he did not hold back when expressing his support for the school he calls home. The Longhorns' leader made it clear that the university has his support across several areas, beyond athletics.

BREAKING: Four-star safety picks Georgia over Texas in huge recruiting blow
Just five days ago, it looked like the Longhorns were in a great spot to get four-star safety Chace Calicut to commit to Texas. But that didn't happen. On Friday, the Houston North Shore prospect committed to recruiting rival Georgia. Calicut, who took part in the exclusive Rivals Five-Star Challenge earlier in the week, told Rivals analyst Sam Spiegelman his relationship with Longhorns CB coach Mark Orphey, who also went to North Shore, when talking about his recruitment by the Longhorns at the event's media day. "Mark Orphey came from my hometown school, North Shore. He coached there. He went to school there. He knows exactly how it is to be from Houston North Shore. And he knows how to fit me in with those guys. That's another reason why Texas is up there. It's the same thing with coach Steve Sarkisian. He really gets the players. He's more of a players coach and that's the type of guy I would like to play for." -- Chace Calicut Calicut took an official visit to Georgia on June 6, followed by Michigan on June 13 and Texas on June 20. On Friday, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound defensive back told Spiegelman he actually made his decision on that first official visit to Athens. "I made my decision down there at Georgia during the official visit," Calicut told Rivals. "The coaches always told me that when you're home, it'll feel right ... When I stepped foot on Georgia's campus, after I got a feel for the program, I knew it was the right spot. How could it get better? I don't think it can ... playing for Kirby Smart, at Georgia, at defensive back ... that's the best you can get for a long cornerback. If you wanna get produced, if you wanna go to the next level, you wanna play at Georgia." -- Chace Calicut Texas does already have three DB's committed to the 2026 class in safeties Jake Collett and Yaheim Riley and cornerback Hayward Howard Jr. Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @LonghornsWire.
