"We can't ignore this any more! #Streetdogs," the Lok Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga constituency said in a post on X.
In a written reply in the Lower House, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying S P Singh Baghel said the total dog bite cases in 2024 stood at 37,17,336 while the total 'suspected human rabies deaths' were 54.
The minister said the data is collected from states/Union Territories under the National Rabies Control Program by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

"The Department provides financial support under the Assistance to State for Control of Animal Diseases component of the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme for procurement of anti-rabies vaccines for animals, including stray dogs," the written reply said.
Rabies remains a significant public health challenge in India, accounting for 36% of global rabies deaths and causing an estimated 18,000 to 20,000 fatalities annually, with a disproportionate impact on children under 15. Despite these alarming statistics, rabies deaths are entirely preventable with prompt and complete post-exposure prophylaxis.
The Centre is aiming to eliminate rabies by 2030.
In the past six months, Karnataka has recorded more than 2.3 lakh dog bite cases and 19 rabies deaths, indicating a sharp increase compared to the corresponding period last year, according to official data released on Sunday. In all of 2024, the state reported 3.6 lakh dog bite cases and 42 rabies deaths.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) - Bengaluru's civic body - shared details of its Rs 2.88 crore plan to feed about 4,000 street dogs in the city and said it has invited a tender in this regard after reviewing the pros and cons of the initiative. Feeding makes it easier to catch the dogs for sterilisation and vaccination. This, in turn, boosts the effectiveness of animal birth control and anti-rabies vaccination campaigns, the civic body said.
Kerala is planning to launch a crackdown on stray dogs by rolling out mobile sterilisation units in 152 blocks and permitting the euthanasia of seriously ill animals, Local Self-Government Minister M B Rajesh said last week.
Since April this year, four children from various parts of the state have died after being bitten by stray dogs, despite receiving the anti-rabies vaccine.
According to Mr Rajesh, 158 trained personnel from the Animal Husbandry Department are currently available for catching stray dogs.
The Kerala Health and Education departments are together planning to organise an awareness programme against rabies in government and aided schools in the state from June 30.

The residents have submitted a representation to the district collector and the Vithura panchayat, demanding a health sub-centre or a primary health centre in the area. Once a flourishing British-era plantation known as Bonaccord, Bonacaud was a hub of activity and employment for hundreds of workers, many of whom had migrated from Tamil Nadu. Established in the 19th century, the estate remained a major tea producer until its decline in the late 20th century, culminating in the factory's closure in 2000.

NephroPlus files DRHP with Sebi, to raise Rs 353 crore via fresh issue
Dialysis services provider Nephrocare Health Services Limited has filed the draft red herring prospectus ( DRHP ) with capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India ( Sebi ) to raise funds through an initial public offering (IPO). The company plans to raise Rs 353.4 crore via issue of fresh shares. Agitating ASHA workers in Kerala welcome Centre's reported incentive hike
The ASHA workers in Kerala who have been agitating for the last several months against the state government demanding a hike and post-retirement benefits, on Saturday welcomed the Centre's reported decision to increase their fixed monthly incentive. They said the union government's decision would be beneficial for over 10 lakh ASHA workers in the country. There are media reports that the Centre approved a proposal to hike the fixed monthly incentive of ASHAs from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,500 during the recent 9th meeting of the Mission Steering Group (MSG). The media also reported that the retirement benefits of the ASHA workers would be increased by the Centre, too. S Mini, state vice president of the Kerala ASHA Health Workers Association (KAHWA) whose members are carrying out the indefinite agitation in front of the Secretariat here, said they had already carried out two Parliament marches raising the same demand. "We welcome the union government's decision to increase the fixed monthly incentive. The incentive had been the same so far since the scheme was launched 18 years ago. We have been demanding the Centre to increase this," she told reporters here. She said the Members of the Parliament from the state visited them when they began the agitation in front of the Secretariat on Feb 10 and assured them to take up the matter with the union government. The present decisions were a continuation of the assurance given by the MPs, she said. The leader said the fixed monthly incentive of the ASHA workers was now raised from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,500 and the retirement benefit was increased from Rs 20,000 to 50,000 by the Centre. "But, we will end our ongoing agitation only when the state government increases the honorarium as demanded by us," Mini said, adding that the state authorities could enhance it easily. A section of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers have been protesting outside the secretariat since February 10, demanding a hike in their honorarium from Rs 7,000 to Rs 21,000 and a post-retirement benefit of five lakh rupees. Asha workers in Kerala receive an honorarium of Rs 7000 -- given entirely by the state. The fixed incentives are given in a 60-40 ratio by the Centre and the state.
