Oops! Mzansi's most commonly forgotten items during e-hailing rides
In a digital world where we are constantly glued to our screens, turns out cellphones are the items riders are likely to lose.
For riders using popular ride-hailing services, this moment of despair often arises from a cocktail of distractions, forgetfulness, and the rush of modern life.
In a world where mobility has become synonymous with convenience, the bitter realisation of forgetting an item during travel can be a particularly painful experience.
While many of us try to juggle our phones, music, and myriad distractions during the ride, the spectacle of leaving behind our personal belongings unfolds routinely, making it one of the unintentional pitfalls of contemporary travel.
Uber's Lost & Found Index reveals the top ten items South Africans tend to forget during rides, shedding light on this all-too-common occurrence that evokes frustration and regret.
So here are the top 10 most forgotten items in South Africa:
Phones and cameras: Once hailed as lifelines for communication and memories, these gadgets are often left behind in the chaos.
Keys: The harbingers of home safety and mobility frequently slip through fingers as thoughts wander elsewhere.
Backpacks/ bags/ luggage: In the hustle and bustle of disembarking, bags can easily become an afterthought.
Wallets/ purses: These crucial companions bearing cash and cards inadvertently get abandoned.
Glasses: A necessity for many, these optical aids can sometimes be the last thing on a person's mind.
Headphones/ speakers: Tunes on the go often lead to the unintentional leaving behind of sound equipment.
Clothing: Whether it's a jacket or a scarf, outerwear can get cast aside amid busy exits.
Passports: Travellers can experience severe anxiety when these essential documents are left behind, especially internationally.
Vapes/E-cigs: For many, these devices have become as common as wallets, leading to their frequent forgetfulness.
Water Bottles/ thermoses: Hydration is essential, but these too often end up as leftover companions in the backseat.
These items resonate with many who have relied on ride-hailing services.
The tendency to become engrossed in phone conversations, lost in music, or simply racing against time can lead to momentary lapses in attention.
As drivers drop off passengers in busy environments, the blend of urgency and distraction often spells trouble for personal belongings.
So when you hop on an e-hailing platform, keeping track of your items while on the move becomes increasingly imperative.
Riders are urged to cultivate a habit of double-checking their belongings before exiting the vehicle.
After all, a moment's distraction shouldn't lead to the loss of cherished or essential items.

The South African national rugby team played its first game, which it won 54- 7, against the British squad. It marks the first of many scheduled games to be played on home soil. On social media, rugby fans who watched from home and those who watched the game live in action have commented about empty seating at the cold and wet DHL Stadium in Cape Town. For many, the 'overpriced' tickets on sale were to blame for the disappointing scenes. TikTok user @ninajanecarterr posted: 'They rugby brings the nation together, but half the nation couldnt even afford to be there.' A second – @coachdullah – posted: 'When playing home matches, SARU should consider the average South African budget. Yes, the Springboks are world champs, but don't make it unaffordable?' A third @ added: 'These prices are outrageous. There are so many who want to go, but simply can't afford to'. @ninajanecarterr all these empty seats and for WHAAATT 🙂 hoping this was a rude awakening for whoever decided on the prices of those tickets?! #springboks #barbarians ♬ original sound – Daiy Abrahams TDM Other Springbok fans excitedly revealed how they managed to scoop high-end tickets for a fraction of the price on match day. Qatar Airways performs DHL Stadium flyover at historic Boks game
For the first time, Qatar Airways performed a low-altitude flyover in South Africa at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town. The historic event took place during the Springboks vs Barbarians game on Saturday, 28 May. The South African team beat the British side 54-7 at the cold and wet venue. An hour before kickoff, Qatar Airways announced that its BB777 aircraft QR3245 would perform a low flyover at the DHL Stadium. Take a look… On social media, many South Africans wondered why a foreign airline, and not a local one like South African Airways or FlySafair – which had previously done iso at the DHL Stadium – had performed the flyover. X user @NielM25614 asked: 'Where are the proud South African SAA?' The Springboks vs Barbarians game was part of the Qatar Airways Cup, which was naturally sponsored by the Arab country's airline. The historic event was celebrated 20 years since Qatar Airways' operation in South Africa. It also marked the first-ever men's team clash between the two sides on South African soil. The airline's sponsorship is one of several, which also includes the United Rugby Championship (URC) and European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) competitions and the upcoming Qatar Airways Lions Tour to Australia later in 2025.
