Time of India7 days ago

Google
announced a comprehensive AI upgrade for its Chromebook Plus portfolio today, introducing five new artificial intelligence-powered features directly integrated into ChromeOS. One of the new features is Circle to Search; since it's coming to Chromebook, Google has dubbed it Select to Search. Other features are Text Capture, Quick Insert, and Simplify. Here's all you need to know about all the new AI features coming to Chromebook Plus.
Select to Search is Circle to Search for Chromebooks
The new Select to search feature allows users to quickly identify and get information about anything on their screen by long-pressing the launcher button or using the screenshot tool. Similar to Android's Circle to Search function, users can select objects like clothing or products to find shopping options without leaving their current application.
Text Capture transforms images into editable text with calendar integration
Text capture pulls information directly from images, including receipts and recipes, transforming it into editable text to eliminate manual retyping. The feature can automatically populate Google Calendar events from highlighted invitations and convert handwritten recipes into digital shopping lists in Google Docs.
One-button access to AI image creation and media insertion
The enhanced Quick Insert key now enables users to generate AI images or insert photos and emojis directly into documents and presentations without interrupting workflow. This builds on last year's Quick Insert functionality by adding Gemini's generative AI capabilities with a single keystroke.

10 things Indian students in Canada must know

Moving to Canada as an Indian student is more than just crossing continents — it's a cultural leap, a financial workout, and often, a climatic betrayal. Between deciphering GPA systems, surviving -30°C winters, and learning that 'sorry' can mean anything, there's a lot that no brochure or university webinar will tell you. This isn't just a guide — it's a reality check wrapped in humor, caffeine, and the occasional identity crisis. Whether you're headed for a master's in Toronto or a diploma in Halifax, here are 10 things every Indian student should know before Canada makes you polite… and permanently broke. Here's a sharp, practical, and slightly tongue-in-cheek list of 10 Things Indian Students in Canada Must Know — whether you're heading to Toronto, chilling in Vancouver, or braving the snow in Saskatoon. 1. The Weather is Not Just Cold. It's a Personality. • Canada doesn't do mild. It does -25°C with a wind chill that makes your ancestors shiver. • Buy a proper jacket. Not a Zara puffer. Think down-filled, fur-lined, costs-as-much-as-rent . 2. 'Sorry' is a National Currency. Learn to Use It. • Someone steps on your foot? You say sorry. • Bump into a pole? Say sorry to the pole. • It's not guilt. It's social lubrication. 3. Tim Hortons is Not Just Coffee. It's a Rite of Passage. • Double-Double. Timbits. Ice Cap in December. • Every Canadian student has survived on a $2.50 coffee and stale bagel combo. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn About Hotel Management Courses in Switzerland and the UK LocalPlan Search Now Undo 4. Tuition is International. So is the Shock. • Brace for ₹25–40 lakhs/year depending on the program. • Add rent, groceries, insurance, winter gear, and Netflix. • Congratulations, you now understand compound financial trauma. 5. You'll Start Saying 'Eh?' Without Realising. • 'It's cold, eh?' • 'Midterms were brutal, eh?' • Soon, even your WhatsApp texts will have passive-aggressive Canadian politeness. 6. No One Knows Where Your 'Percentage' Fits. • 85% in CBSE? They'll convert it to a 3.2 GPA and hand you a participation medal. • Learn the bell curve system and curve your expectations. 7. Work Permits are Your Second Degree. • 20 hours/week part-time. That's the law. • Uber Eats, Walmart shifts, TA jobs, or helping aunties with Excel — everything counts. • But no, you can't pay off your fees working part-time. That's a myth. 8. Cultural Shift is Real. Prepare for Reverse Shock Too. • First, you'll feel out of place in Canada. • Then, you'll go back to India and feel out of place there . • It's not identity crisis. It's character development. 9. Build Credit History. It's Like Dating Your Bank. • Get a credit card. Use it. Pay on time. • Want to rent an apartment, buy a car, or not be treated like a financial toddler? Start early. 10. You'll Meet Other Indians. Many. Everywhere. • One moment you're speaking Hinglish in the subway, next minute you're at a Diwali potluck in Brampton. • Canada's a multicultural buffet. Delhi court summons Harsatinder Pal Singh Hayer in Rs 48,000 cr Ponzi case

New Delhi: A Delhi court has summoned Harsatinder Pal Singh Hayer, son-in-law of the late Pearls Group chairperson Nirmal Singh Bhangoo, in connection with a money laundering probe linked to an alleged Rs 48,000 crore Ponzi scheme that defrauded numerous investors. Bhangoo passed away in Aug 2024. Special Judge Jagdish Kumar ordered Hayer to appear before the court on July 18, 2025. "I have carefully examined the documents and witness statements. Prima facie, there is sufficient material on record against Harsatinder Pal Singh Hayer and MBD Housing Complex Private Limited for the offence of money laundering. Let them be summoned for July 18, 2025," the judge stated. Hayer was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March and is currently in judicial custody. On June 9, the court found prima facie evidence against him. The ongoing money laundering investigation, dating back to 2015, stems from a CBI FIR against Pearls Agrotech Corporation Limited ( PACL ), PGF Limited, Bhangoo, and others for running fraudulent investment schemes to deceive investors. ITR filing FY 2024-25: How can taxpayers switch between old and new income tax regimes? Explained

The new personal tax regime has been made the default regime from the financial year 2023-24. (AI image) ITR filing FY 2024-25: When e-filing your Income Tax Regime (ITR) for AY 2025-26, the choice of the income tax regime is an important one. The new income tax regime is the default tax regime, so if you want to file your tax return under the old regime, you will have to expressly opt for it. The new personal tax regime has been made the default regime from the financial year 2023-24. So how can you make the switch from the new income tax regime to the old tax regime? We explain: ITR filing: How To Switch Between New & Old Tax Regime A salaried taxpayer can switch from one regime to another every year , so long as they file the original return of income within the due date u/s 139(1). According to Ishita Sengupta, Partner and India Leader, Vialto Partners, a taxpayer only has to select the appropriate option in the ITR Form 1 or ITR 2 by ticking 'Yes' or 'No' in response to the question: 'Do you wish to exercise the option u/s 115BAC(6) of opting out of the new tax regime?' By default, this section is pre-filled with 'No'. Also Read | Income Tax Return: What is Form 16? Top things taxpayers should check in this document before filing ITR 'Notably, if a return is filed after the due date (i.e., a belated return), the default tax regime—New Income Tax Regime—will automatically apply. However, if a revised return is filed, the taxpayer can still exercise the option to choose the regime, as long as the original return was filed within the due date,' Ishita Sengupta tells TOI. A taxpayer with business or professional income is NOT allowed to choose between the old and new tax regimes each financial year . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Adidas Three Shorts With 60% Discount, Limited Stock Available Original Adidas Shop Now Undo If the taxpayer opts out of the new tax regime, they are permitted to switch back to it only once. Once the taxpayer reverts to the new income tax regime, they cannot opt for the old regime again in the future. To opt out of the new regime, a declaration must be submitted in Form 10-IEA before the due date for filing the original return. Ishita Sengupta explains that the ITR 4 (SUGAM) released for the FY 2024-25 (applicable for those who have business/ professional income under presumptive taxation) now seeks more comprehensive details from individual taxpayers opting out of the new income tax regime. The taxpayers are now required to disclose: Whether they have filed Form 10-IEA to opt out of new income tax regime in last year (FY 2023–24), along with the date of filing and the acknowledgement number Whether they intend to continue opting out for it the current year (FY 2024–25). If not, they must again provide Form 10-IEA details for the current year Even if Form 10-IEA was not filed or was filed late for last year (FY 2023–24), taxpayers must elect their current choice of regime and submit Form 10-IEA details accordingly The taxpayers who filed ITR-1 or ITR-2 last year must also confirm whether they wish to opt out this year and provide Form 10-IEA details, if applicable Hence, before making a final selection between the two income tax regimes, taxpayers should carry out a comparative analysis to determine which is more beneficial for them.
