After ending streaks, Yankees vie for series win vs. Blue Jays

Reuters23-07-2025
July 23 - The visiting New York Yankees aim to ride the momentum from a dramatic win into the rubber match of their three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night.
Ben Rice snapped a tie with a home run in the ninth inning against Toronto closer Jeff Hoffman in the Yankees' 5-4 win on Tuesday night.
The Yankees had dropped five straight games in Toronto this season, including a 4-1 loss Monday in the opener of the series.
"We got the monkey off our back a little bit there," said Yankees Devin Williams, who pitched the bottom of the ninth to earn the save on Tuesday. "I said earlier, 'We played five games here and haven't come away with a win once.' So, it was nice to have a lead and be able to lock it down and leave with a win."
"It's huge," Rice said. "Obviously, we lost five in a row to these guys, so coming back and getting a win here gives us some good momentum heading into tomorrow."
The Yankees snapped Toronto's 11-game home winning streak and moved to within three games of the first-place Blue Jays in the American League East.
Momentum is said to be the next day's pitcher and the Yankees have a good candidate to provide it on Wednesday with scheduled starter Max Fried (11-3, 2.43 ERA). The left-hander is 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA in five career starts against the Blue Jays.
Fried left his last start before the All-Star break on July 12 with a blister on his left index finger. He was considered ready to start on Wednesday.
He will be facing a strong mound opponent in right-hander Chris Bassitt (10-4, 3.89), who is scheduled to start for Toronto. He is 4-1 with a 2.03 ERA in seven career starts against the Yankees and is 1-1 with a 5.56 ERA in two starts versus them this season.
In addition to Rice's big blast on Wednesday, the Yankees got two doubles, a homer and a couple superb catches in left field from Cody Bellinger. Jazz Chisholm Jr. belted a three-run homer on Tuesday.
The Yankees overcame another throwing error by shortstop Anthony Volpe that led to two unearned runs in the sixth inning. Rice could not make the scoop on the one-bounce throw. Volpe and Oswald Peraza also contributed two unearned runs to the Blue Jays with throwing errors on Monday.
The Yankees made the most of their chances, going 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranding three runners. The Blue Jays were 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.
Toronto's bullpen was solid leading to Hoffman, who was pitching for the fourth time in five days. His use is a sign of playing in meaningful games in a division race and could indicate where Toronto's priorities might be at the trade deadline.
"He does such a good job of letting us know how he feels," Toronto manager John Schneider said. "We're at the point now where guys are going to have to be pushed a little bit. I didn't want to start the ninth inning with someone else and then feel the urge to bring Jeff in. I'd rather give them a clean inning. Just a pull heater there to Rice. They can hit home runs, that's what they do."

Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons demands trade: ‘I no longer want to be here'

Superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons requested a trade on Friday, declaring on social media that 'I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys.' Parsons, 26, has not been taking part in on-field activities at training camp while seeking a long-term extension that would make him one of the league's highest-paid defensive players. The Athletic reported earlier Friday that the team and the two-time All-Pro are still 'far apart' with their contract numbers. Of course, Parsons could be bluffing to force the Cowboys' hand, but the language in his lengthy post Friday on X clearly communicated his frustration. Thank you Dallas 🦁👑 🙏🏾! I 'Yes I wanted to be here. I did everything I could to show that I wanted to be a Cowboys and wear the star on my helmet,' Parsons wrote. '... Unfortunately I no longer want to be here. I no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present. I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me.' Parsons said his attempts to discuss an extension started after the 2023 season but have repeatedly been met by 'radio silence' from the Cowboys. 'Up to today the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about a contract,' Parsons wrote. 'Not one demand has been made by my agent about money, years or anything else. 'Still I stayed quiet but again after repeated shots at myself and all the narratives I have made a tough decision I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted to Stephen Jones personally.' Parsons is scheduled to earn $24m this season on his fifth-year option. The 2021 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has recorded double-digit sacks in each of his first four seasons and has watched the market for pass rushers explode. Defensive end Myles Garrett signed a four-year, $160m extension with the Cleveland Browns. Maxx Crosby inked a three-year, $106.5m extension with the Las Vegas Raiders. TJ Watt's extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers was for three years and $123m. A Parsons extension likely would be in the same ballpark – or more. Per the Athletic, Parsons and team owner Jerry Jones talked directly in the spring, and the Cowboys believe those conversations were negotiations with a deal for an extension in place. The Parsons' camp instead portrayed the meetings as talks and not negotiations, and that the Cowboys have declined to negotiate with his agent because team officials believed an agreement already was in place. Speaking in April at the NFL's annual league meeting, Jones acknowledged his conversation with Parsons, saying the two spoke for 'five or six hours' to work out a long-term extension. 'Most of the issues we are in agreement on. We discussed it all,' Jones said April 1. 'But we obviously don't have an agreement relative to the new contract.' The Dallas Morning News reported in March that Parsons was seeking a record- setting $200m contract extension that would make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Parsons recorded 12 sacks, 43 tackles and two forced fumbles in 13 games (all starts) last season. A Pro Bowl selection in each of his first four seasons in the league, Parsons has totaled 256 tackles (63 for loss), 112 quarterback hits, 52.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 63 career games (all starts).

Marlins complete improbable comeback to beat Yankees 13-12

August 2 - With one out in the ninth, Xavier Edwards scored from third base on a swinging bunt by Agustin Ramirez as the host Miami Marlins rallied for a 13-12 walk-off win over the New York Yankees on Friday night. The Marlins trailed 9-4 before scoring six runs in the seventh inning. They also entered the bottom of the ninth down 12-10. All-Star Kyle Stowers led Miami with a grand slam, and Javier Sanoja homered twice. Jose Caballero, making his Yankees debut, made a key fielding error in right field in the ninth inning, leading to Miami's final rally. Giancarlo Stanton, playing against his former team, and Trent Grisham each drilled three-run homers for New York. Marlins center fielder Jakob Marsee made his MLB debut, going 1-for-2 with three walks, one double and two runs. Anthony Bender (3-5) got the win despite allowing two runs in the top of the ninth. Yankees All-Star Carlos Rodon got a no-decision despite striking out nine batters. He allowed two hits, a season-high-tying five walks and four runs in 4 2/3 innings. The Yankees took a 12-10 lead in the ninth as Ryan McMahon hit an RBI single and Anthony Volpe added an RBI double. But the Marlins roared back in the bottom half as Sanoja singled, Marsee walked and Edwards singled to right off Camilo Doval (4-3). Caballero couldn't glove the ball coming his way, and two runs scored as Edwards reached third. Edwards then scored on Ramirez's swinging bunt for the improbable victory. The Yankees acquired three relief pitchers at Thursday's trade deadline -- Jake Bird, David Bednar and Camilo Doval -- and they combined to give up nine runs on Friday. New York opened the scoring in the fourth as Stanton swung at a 2-2 slider, pulling it 409 feet to left to give New York a 3-0 lead. Stanton leads all active players with 438 career homers. New York extended its lead to 6-0 in the fifth on an RBI single by Jasson Dominguez and Cody Bellinger's two-run single. But Miami fought back with a four-run bottom of the fifth. Sanoja hit an opposite-field, two-run homer, and Liam Hicks blooped a two-run single that had an exit velocity of just 67 mph. Grisham's three-run homer in the seventh gave New York a 9-4 lead. Stowers' grand slam to left in the bottom of the seventh was nearly caught by Dominguez as the ball deflected off his glove. Sanoja then homered off Bednar, tying the score 9-9. Ramirez, a former Yankees prospect, lined a go-ahead RBI single to cap the rally. However, Volpe tied the score 10-10 with a homer to lead off the eighth. --Field Level Media

Emma Raducanu knocked out of Canadian Open in straight sets loss to Amanda Anisimova

Emma Raducanu has crashed out of the Canadian Open in straight sets, going down 6-2 6-1 to the American fifth seed Amanda Anisimova in the third round. Raducanu had won both of their previous meetings but rarely looked like extending that run as she held her serve just once in either set in Montreal. Anisimova, who made the Wimbledon final in July, came from 40-15 down to break Raducanu's serve in the second game of the match and, although the British No 1 broke back immediately, she was unable to fashion another break point in the contest. The American broke again to make it 3-1 and added a third break to wrap up the set. Her dominance continued in the second set as Raducanu won just eight points on her own serve, avoiding the whitewash after losing the first five games. Anisimova served it out to book a place in the fourth round, where she will face 10th seed Elina Svitolina, who stormed past Anna Kalinskaya 6-1 6-1 on Friday night. The Wimbledon champion Iga Świątek needed little more than an hour to complete a 6-2 6-2 victory over Germany's Eva Lys. Swiatek next faces Denmark's Clara Tauson, who beat Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-3 6-0. But Jessica Pegula's bid for a third straight Montreal title was ended by World No 386 Anastasija Sevastova. The Latvian, a former world number 11 who has had lengthy spells out on maternity leave and with a torn ACL, beat the third seed Pegula 3-6 6-4 6-1 to book a date with Naomi Osaka.
