The 2025 Briggs Equipment North West 200 is in for some scorching weather and racing
With Glenn Irwin, the winner of the last eleven Superbike races in a row sitting out this year's meeting, the three premier class races at Ireland's biggest road race are more wide open than ever.
Local favourite Michael Dunlop said he wants to be a winner again around the 8.9 mile Triangle course after notching up a maiden victory on his new M1000RR BMW at the recent Cookstown 100.
The local favourite, who hasn't won a race at Portrush since 2016, has made a major machinery change for 2025, switching from a Yamaha R6 to a Ducati V2 Panigale in the Supersport class and opting for BMW power in the Superbike and Superstock classes.

The Ballymoney man will debut a superbike-spec version of the M1000RR when qualifying for the three-day event begins on Wednesday morning.
The action will be hot and furious as Dunlop faces stern opposition in his quest.
Alastair Seeley, the north coast event's most successful rider, will be one of his biggest challengers as he returns to the NW200 fray following a 2024 sabbatical when he was unable to secure suitable machinery.
The 45 year old will be mounted on a SMS/ Nicholl Oils Racing M1000RR BMW in the Superbike and Superstock classes this year plus a CD Racing by MSS Performance ZXR 636 Kawasaki in the Supersport races.
The all-time record holder at Ireland's biggest road race will be chasing a landmark 30th victory at the seaside event where he won his first race in 2008.

Honda Racing's Dean Harrison has stood on the NW200 podium five times over the last two seasons but has not been able to break his victory famine around the high speed course.

The Bradford man will line up in the Superbike, Superstock and Supersport classes this year with seven chances to make his breakthrough.
8TEN Racing duo, Peter Hickman and Davey Todd, will also be chasing their first North West 200 Superbike victory. The duo will face an uphill battle however as they race against time to prepare their new Superbike and Superstock-spec M1000RR BMWs for the high speed encounter at Portrush.
Todd enjoyed a hat-trick of wins in the Supersport and Superstock races at last year's event and Hickman scored a double in the Supertwin races aboard a Swan Yamaha.

In the smaller capacity classes Todd will campaign a CBR600RR Honda in Milenco Padgett's colours this year while Hickman will be aboard a Supersport-spec Triumph and a R7 Yamaha in the 'Twins class.
But with the clock running down to the start of the road racing season, neither rider has enjoyed much testing or race laps on their new for 2025 mounts which is far from ideal preparation ahead of the NW200 speed fest.
Former North West winner Ian Hutchinson will line-up alongside Cork's Mike Browne on another pair of BMWs in Michael Laverty's newly formed team.
Described as the busiest man in bike racing, the former British Supersport champion from Toomebridge, who is now a MotoGP TV pundit, looks set to be juggling a lot of plates at Portrush.
Former NW200 outright lap record holder and double British Superbike champion, Josh Brookes, is another leading name who will be trying to get his name on a NW200 Superbike trophy for the first time.
Brookes will have a Jackson Racing Honda at his disposal in the premier class events this year.
Each race is packed with talent and a host of riders who could make their mark on the 2025 NW200.

Richard Cooper has become something of a Triangle course specialist since making his North West debut in 2019.
The 42 year old added a maiden win in the Fraser Homes Supersport race on Alastair Russell's R6 at last year's NW200 to his four previous Supertwin victories at the north coast event with Ryan Farquhar's KMR team and he is staying put with the same teams for 2025.
Jamie Coward will return to the north coast with his KTS Racing squad after a three year break. Previously a podium finisher at Portrush, Coward will have his sights set on a similar result at least in the Supersport and Supertwin classes in particular.
Manxman Conor Cummins will be hoping to impress as he makes his NW200 debut with the RK Racing/Burrows squad team on BMW and Ducati machinery and Finland's Erno Kostamo is always one to watch in the big bike events.

Two men who have well and truly served earned their NW200 stripes are veterans John McGuinness and Michael Rutter.
Rutter will be aiming for his 100th race start this year having competed in 97 races since making his debut in 1992.
Only Alastair Seeley and 15 times winner, Robert Dunlop, have been more successful at the North West 200 than the Englishman who will ride a BMW in the Superbike races and a R7 Yamaha in the Twins class this week.
Honda Racing's McGuinness, who made his debut two years after Rutter, will be hoping for a similar result to last year when he received the loudest cheer of the day as he climbed on to the rostrum after finishing third in the CP Hire Superstock race.

Race Schedule
The action begins on Wednesday morning with roads closing between 9am and 3pm for Newcomer's practice and qualifying.
Final qualifying resumes on Thursday between 9am and 3pm before roads close again at 4.45pm and the racing begins with the Milwaukee Superbike event at 5.30pm, the Fraser Homes Supersport race at 6.30pm and the Amici Ristorante Superstock clash at 7.15pm.
All three races will be run over four laps with roads scheduled to re-open by 9pm

On Saturday the roads are scheduled to close at 9am and the action set to begin at 10am with the Maxwell Freight Services Supertwin race (4 laps) followed by the Briggs Equipment Superbike race, the Tides Restaurant Supersport race and the CP Hire Superstock race, all run over 6 laps.
The 4 lap JM Paterson Supertwin race over is the penultimate event with the 6 lap Merrow Hotel and Spa Superbike race bringing the curtain down on the high speed festival on Saturday evening with roads scheduled to re-open by 7pm at the latest.

BMW X3 plug-in hybrid review: It looks a lot like beige to me – but in a good way
I'm an advocate for buying the best car you can, and also the one that sucker-punches the environment the least. So EVs are okay by me, but I have to admit to a sneaking feeling of contentment whenever I get the – increasingly rare – chance to slip behind the wheel of a diesel car these days. Maybe it's that I spent so many journalistic years driving around in the diesel-engined cars that we were all told, back in 2009, were the official tax-approved answer to lowering vehicle emissions. That worked out well … Still, the feeling that one gets from seeing a four-figure distance-to-refuel on the dashboard, combined with the knowledge that the refuel will take no more than five minutes, gives one a warm and fuzzy, if somewhat guilty, feeling. It's how I felt late last year when I drove the new BMW X3 for the first time. It was an X3 20d xDrive model, in M-Sport trim, and while I don't quite love the way it looked, I do love the way it drives (firm, but fun) and I (guiltily) love the way it's easy to refuel. READ MORE So I approached a test drive of this, the BMW X3 30e plug-in hybrid, assuming that I'd already driven the best of the new X3. I must admit to being distracted, in a good way, by the 'Dune Grey' paintwork, which looks a lot like beige to me. Others within my social group hated the colour, but I like it. BMW X3 PHEV Inside, this PHEV X3 is just as mixed a bag as the diesel. The big twin screens look great, but the lack of physical control elicits a 'boo!' from the gallery. The seats are great, but while some of the cabin is made of impressive high-quality materials, some are equally not up to par, which jars a bit. Space is good, though, even if the boot in this hybrid version loses more than 100 litres of storage space compared to the diesel model. So work that into your calculations when considering a purchase. One nice touch is the art setting for the 'My Modes' function. This may seem a bit ephemeral, but amid the Sport, Efficiency and other modes for the big screens and the ambient lighting bar, the X3 also includes a 'Digital Art Screen'. This splashes, across both infotainment and instrument screens, a vibrant purple, blue, and green design that subtly changes as you drive along. [ BMW X3 road test: Blocky model finds its edge once again Opens in new window ] This is no AI-generated slop, but the work of renowned Chinese artist Cao Fei, and, rather brilliantly, there's a button on the screen which, when pressed, plays an audio recording of Fei talking you through her own in-car work. Cheesy? Yes, a bit, but also a way of bringing BMW's famed 'Art Car' tradition into the cabin, and I rather liked it. Okay, on to more serious stuff. The X3 PHEV uses the same 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine and 135kW electric motor as the 530e saloon and Touring, and promises a combination of up to 90km of electric range, with 299hp, and a reasonably brisk 6.2-second time for getting from 0-100km/h. And it all works rather well. True, you probably won't get 90km on a full battery. We managed 70km in mixed conditions, but that's at least fairly usable. Better is the long-range fuel economy with a flat battery. BMW claims 7.0-litres per 100km for that, and we managed slightly better, at 6.9 litres per 100km. That beats what we got from the rival Mercedes GLC plug-in hybrid, and makes it one of the more frugal SUV PHEVs around. Forget the official WLTP figure of just 1.1 litres per 100km, unless you're hardly ever using that petrol engine, but mixed economy of around 5.3 litres per 100km seems pretty easy with only a modicum of charging. It's also a car that feels quick, with a delicious (digitally-augmented) snarl from that four-cylinder engine when you accelerate, and no lack of performance when you're running in fully electric mode. BMW X3 PHEV The X3 PHEV is also a sharp drive, with excellent steering, and a broadly similar feeling to the diesel model. Thanks to stiff springs, but with excellent damping, you feel every imperfection in the road while you also feel the car dealing with those imperfections with iron-fisted confidence. Honestly, I'm starting to think that this might be the better option than the diesel model. It has its limitations, such as it will only charge on AC power so there's no option for a faster DC charging top-up. But that's probably a good thing from a running costs point of view. There is, however, something that absolutely copper-fastens the appeal of this plug-in hybrid X3 compared to its diesel brethren: the price tag. The diesel X3 we tested, in the same sporty M-Sport trim (the one that everyone buys), and with broadly comparable equipment levels, topped €111,000 in the as-tested price category. This PHEV? €80,000. So you could buy this X3 PHEV, and still have enough change from a Renault 5 EV for short hops, compared to the diesel one we drove? I think I'm finally ready to forego the black pump. Make mine a PHEV (and yes, in beige please). Lowdown: BMW X3 30e xDrive PHEV Power: 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 135kW motor and 19.7kWh lithium-ion battery producing 299hp and 450 of torque and powering the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. CO2 emissions (annual motor tax): 21-26g/km (€140). Fuel consumption: 1.1l/100km (WLTP, see text) 0-100km/h: 6.2 secs. Price: €80,575 as tested, X3 starts from €73,157 Our rating: 4/5. Verdict: The X3 is an impressive plug-in hybrid, but the price advantage over the diesel model seals the deal.

Galway Races tips: 'I'm planning on making a Fortune on the second night'
A TRAPPY Tuesday for punters at Galway as the second night sees five flat races, three of them handicaps. Events in Glorious Goodwood earlier in the day means several younger riders are getting an opportunity to shine for bigger yards and it could be a huge evening for young Jack Cleary in the Coolmore silks. Incredibly the Colm Quinn Mile must be one of the very few big races on the Irish flat calendar that Aidan O'Brien has never won but Cleary will be hoping to change that stat tonight on Mississippi River. 5.05 - COLM QUINN BMW Novice Hurdle A cracking novice hurdle that wouldn't look out of place in a Grade 1 over the winter months with the vote going to the Willie Mullins-trained filly LA NOTE VERTE. She looks the type that'll really enjoy the good ground, being by Australia, and comes here having won a bumper and two hurdle races at Listowel and Roscommon. She was impressive in that Roscommon race, and wasn't asked a question in drawing clear two out and she could make a Festival horse next spring. Vicar Street merits real respect from the same stable in the JP McManus silks and won his maiden hurdle at Roscommon in impressive fashion. SÉLECTION: LA NOTE VERTE Each-way: Vicar Street 5.37 - Latin Quarter Beginners Chase LISNAGAR FORTUNE was very disappointing last time out but his previous effort at the Punchestown Festival when third in a valuable handicap chase would give him a chance. Paul Townend has elected to ride Willie Mullins' other runner My Great Mate but he may have made the wrong decision as this son of Soldier Of Fortune has the ability to win. He'll need to improve his jumping and run to a better level than his 127 rating but is the pick of the three Closutton contenders. King Of Kingsfield is a horse with plenty of ability and ran off 146 at the Cheltenham Festival in a handicap hurdle so he'll be expected to make a decent chaser for Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown. TIP: LISNAGAR FORTUNE Each-way: King Of Kingsfield 6.07 - COLM QUINN BMW Irish EBF Fillies Maiden AMELIA EARHART can reverse placings with runner-up Thenandnow from their meeting at Leopardstown earlier this month. Aidan O'Brien's daughter of Camelot was unusually well supported for a Ballydoyle juvenile on debut but ran green and should come on a tonne for that racecourse experience. Young Jack Cleary is entrusted with the ride with both Ryan Moore and Wayne Lordan at Goodwood and although stall six will be a challenge, she should prove to be good enough. A field of eight runners makes each-way betting appeal and Paddy Twomey's debutant Black Caviar Gold has to be respected. TIP: AMELIA EARHART Each-way: Black Caviar Gold 6.40 - COLM QUINN BMW Mile Handicap NORWALK HAVOC was beaten only a neck in this race last year off 4lbs higher and from a crucially important low draw, the Jessica Harrington-trained four-year-old can go one place better. He went on to win a Listed race Leopardstown on heavy ground and warmed up for this race with an encouraging effort in a Group 3 race back at the Dublin venue last month. Harrington has surprisingly never won this day two feature at Galway but with a good break this frontrunning gelding may end her losing run under stable jockey Shane Foley. Fourteen are declared and Mississippi River is one who could sneak into a place with Aidan O'Brien having given 5lbs claimer Jack Cleary the nod for his three-year-old. It's over 20 years since this race went to a horse from the Classic generation but he comes here having run well to finish fourth in the Nasrullah Handicap and only carries 8st8lbs with Cleary's claim and the age allowance. He is susceptible to an unexposed newcomer but his neck defeat to Fingerpaint on Guineas weekend at Flat HQ is form that should be good enough here. He's been gelded since and stall five is not a bad result in a race where being drawn low is crucial. Dermot Weld's Raykir is rated 80 and respected at this venue coming from Roswell House. TIP: COLLECTING COIN Each-way: Raykir 7.50 - Handicap ALPHA CAPTURE has only been seen twice since finishing runner-up in a handicap here 12 months ago and connections patience can be rewarded in this competitive contest. Trained by Willie Mullins for Simon Munir and Isaac Souede he was previously trained in the UK by William Haggas and must surely have a victory in him soon having also finished second on his seasonal debut at Leopardstown. Mullins has booked the wily Seamus Heffernan and the five-year-old could well be thrown in off a mark of 77. Nicola Burns is a name we may hear of plenty this week as she's a very good apprentice and she could well steer Titanium into a place for Ciaran Murphy. TIP: ALPHA CAPTURE Each-way: Titanium 8.20 - Caulfield Industrial Handicap Another very trick handicap to finish day two but LOINGSEOIR is a seasoned campaigner that might just produce his best for the talented Nicola Burns, claiming 7lbs. The nine-year-old has been a marvellous servant to Michael Grassick winning six times from his 63 races having cost just E1,000 as a yearling. He has been holding his form well over the summer and loves coming with a run off a fast pace and in a big field, which is what he'll get tonight. TIP: LOINGSEOIR Each-way: Rampage
