Johor bookings in as school's out on both ends of the Causeway
Local industry players said they are gearing up for a much-anticipated travel wave from across the Causeway.
Desaru Fruit Farm director Steve Er Wee Heng said the tourism industry in Johor is experiencing good times again with both local and international visitors.
'With Malaysia and Singapore having school holidays now, we expect to see many visitors at the farm,' he said.
Er said many hotels operating in Desaru, which is about 75km from here, were highly booked due to the school holidays in both countries.
'We expect June to be a busy month for us, especially from the second week, as Desaru has become a popular getaway for both Malaysian and Singaporean holidaymakers with many attractions in the area,' he added.
Er said there are many activities at the farm for the family to enjoy, from tasting various tropical fruits to seeing its many animals.
Malaysian Association of Hotels Johor Chapter chairman Ivan Teo confirmed the high volume of hotel bookings in the state.
'Besides hotels in Johor Baru, those in other areas in the state such as Desaru and even Mersing are experiencing a surge in bookings.
'Singaporeans remain the bulk of foreign visitors but we are also seeing visitors from Japan, South Korea and China coming over.'
State unity, heritage and culture committee chairman K. Raven Kumar said about 80% of hotel rooms throughout Johor were already booked due to the school holidays.
He said that the strong bookings reflect the growing global interest in Johor as a travel destination.
'This is not just a school holiday phenomenon because even on regular weekends, we have recorded impressive numbers, particularly around Johor Baru.
'Other areas like Mersing are also seeing an increase in visitor traffic,' he said.
The school holidays in Malaysia started on Thursday and will last until June 9, while Singapore school holidays are from today till June 29.

Last month, K-pop boy groups ATEEZ (에이티즈) and CRAVITY (크래비티) shared the stage, performing for Malaysian fans at the 2025 KPop Masterz in Kuala Lumpur. The latter also took part in several interviews, including one with Hype Malaysia, which you can read more about here. In one of their interviews with local media, the members not only had the chance to sample some Malaysian snacks but were also given duit raya. Duit raya in June? Why not! Here's what happened: Earlier this week, ERA FM posted the second part of their interview with CRAVITY during the group's recent visit to Malaysia. In the video, host Muna Bella told the members that a part of their song Break All The Rules had gone viral among Malaysians during Hari Raya due to a case of misheard lyrics. She then asked the group to sing the misheard line '이제 그 두 발을 내디뎌봐', which sounded like: 'Encik, ketupat rendang di depan.' Since Hari Raya had come up in conversation, and with Aidiladha, or Hari Raya Haji, being celebrated at the time of the interview, Muna took the opportunity to gift each member an envelope containing duit raya. 'Selamat Hari Raya!' she said cheerfully as she handed them out. Another highlight of the interview was when the host introduced the group to a variety of nostalgic Malaysian childhood snacks, including Tiger Biscuits, Apollo, Mamee Monster, and Nyam Nyam. Taeyoung, who lived in Malaysia when he was younger, recognised one of the foods on the table. 'Sangat Sedap!' the members said after trying the local snacks. The interview quickly went viral on social media, with fans praising the CRAVITY members for their politeness when receiving duit raya from Muna. Setiu eatery offers seafood with a view
THERE are many reasons to visit the east coast state of Terengganu, and indulging in local seafood at beachside eateries is high on the list for many. Boasting scenic views and a sea breeze, Pantai Penarik in Setiu district – about 60km north of Kuala Terengganu – is lined with numerous restaurants along the coastline. Among them is Celup Tepung Cikgu, which offers a range of deep-fried seafood in addition to regular warung staples like fried rice and sup tulang. Popular items include battered squid, fried crab and fried Indian mackerel, typically served with colek which is a spicy local dipping sauce. The breezy spot near Pantai Penarik in Setiu gets popular in the evenings, with seats in the common covered area or right on the sand (pic, above). Prices range from RM10 to RM15 per 100g for seafood, and between RM7 and RM20 per plate for other dishes. The eatery operates daily from 10am to 10pm, but really comes alive in the evening as customers arrive to dine by the beach. In addition to a common covered seating area, those who prefer privacy or like to get close to the sea can dine at individual huts on the sand, ideal for enjoying the sea breeze and sunset views. 'We will refry the foods before serving, to ensure they are hot and crispy,' she said. She added that the eatery has many customers from the Klang Valley as well as Sabah and Sarawak, and a smattering of foreign visitors too. Customer Mohd Azrul Amirudin, who travelled with his family from Gombak in Selangor, said the restaurant's laidback setting was the draw. 'We came to Kuala Terengganu for a holiday and decided to check out this popular beach when we saw the restaurant. 'It is a nice place to wind down with family and friends. 'And there are plenty of spots to take pictures,' he said. Tourist Darryl Breese Abdullah, visiting with his Malaysian wife Sharifah Hanum Kassim from Connecticut in the US, also enjoyed the setting. 'I especially enjoy the scenery. It is a relaxing place and the locals are very friendly too,' he said. The eatery also offers set menus priced between RM60 and RM170.
