Pep Guardiola says Man City will ‘rest our minds' after Club World Cup exit

The Premier League side were beaten 4-3 in extra time after a pulsating clash at Orlando's Camping World Stadium to exit the competition at the last-16 stage.
City were left to rue a succession of missed chances as they failed to add to Bernardo Silva's ninth-minute opener before Marcos Leonardo and Malcom turned the game around.
PEP 💬 In these stages they are all difficult games. We allowed them to create transitions but we created a lot and in general we were good.
It's a pity. We were in such a good place and I can't not say thank you to the staff, how they train and prepare, they have given… pic.twitter.com/uQItKLWMgR

Erling Haaland sent the game to extra time but City needed another equaliser from Phil Foden after Kalidou Koulibaly headed the Saudi Arabian outfit back in front.
City, who were repeatedly caught on the break, could not regain the initiative and Leonardo secured a major upset – and a statement victory for Saudi football – with 112 minutes on the clock.
Guardiola said: 'It is a pity. We have been on incredible journey together and were in a good place. The vibe was really good.
'I cannot thank the players enough for training and playing how they have been.
'But it was a difficult game. The margins were minimal. We created a lot and (Yassine) Bounou made incredible saves but we were so open.
'We would have loved to have continued, it will only be once every four years, and we had a feeling that the team was doing well.
'But we go home and now it is time to rest and rest our minds for the new season.'
City had been strong favourites to prevail and go through to a quarter-final clash against Fluminense, the side they thrashed 4-0 in the 2023 final, but Guardiola conceded there were shortcomings at both ends of the field.

He said: 'We regret a little bit that we allowed them to run a bit more. They defended so deep, the wingers were so quick and Bounou made a lot of saves.
'In the end, we have to score and be clinical. They arrived more in the transitions. They did not create much in the first half but we did but could not finish it.
'I had a feeling we could go through but they punished us on the transitions.'
The result underlines the rapid of acceleration of Saudi football in recent years.
Al-Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi said: 'The key to this result was the players, the heart they put on the pitch.
'We had to do something extraordinary because we knew how good Manchester City are, we knew we had to climb Mount Everest without oxygen and we were great.
'Guardiola is the best coach in the world but tonight we did our best and we deserved the result.'

Liverpool's new goalie coach was so bad he was branded club's worst-ever keeper

Xavi Valero has returned to Liverpool as head goalkeeper coach after spells with Inter Milan, Real Madrid and West Ham, but his playing days weren't quite as prosperous A goalkeeping coach branded as Wrexham 's worst-ever keeper has rejoined Premier League champions Liverpool. Xavi Valero has returned to Anfield as the Reds' new head of goalkeeper coaching after a seven-year spell at West Ham. The Spaniard has carved out an impressive coaching career after first joining Liverpool under Rafael Benitez in 2007. The 52-year-old later followed his compatriot to Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid, before later linking up with the Hammers in the summer of 2018. ‌ However, Valero's playing career was less distinguished after it began with Spanish teams like Castellon and Lagrones in the late-1990s and early-2000s. Following spells in the Spanish Segunda Division and Segunda Division B, he arrived on British shores in January 2005. ‌ Valero's move to Wrexham happened after the club's first-choice goalkeeper suffered a thigh injury, leaving them without a senior shot-stopper. Denis Smith was Wrexham's manager at the time and made the decision to sign Valero on a one-month deal, despite previously only having seen video footage of him. His stint with the Red Dragons was both short and disastrous as he, conceded nine goals in three appearances in League One, dropping several howlers along the way. Valero was hooked off by Smith at half-time during his final game against Chesterfield after the keeper's teammates told the manager they weren't comfortable playing with him. Former Wrexham coach Kevin Russell previously revealed he had major reservations about the signing before it was even agreed. Talking to the Fearless in Devotion podcast, he said: "We got a video sent through of him. We were watching it with Denis, and there was a big crowd. Denis said, 'He looks alright, I think I might sign him.' I said, 'That might not even be him. I'm not comfortable signing him like that.' "We played Chesterfield away, and it's got be the worst f***ing 45 minutes I've ever had in terms of a goalkeeping experience. Denis goes, 'I'm f***ing taking him off.' I said, 'Take him off? I wanted to get him off after the first ten minutes.' ‌ Russell added: "I say that, but what a coaching career that boy has had. He must not work on catching the f***ing football." Valero's return to Liverpool follows the departure of Fabian Otte and Claudio Taffarel from the Reds' goalkeeping department. His arrival was announced alongside that of Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who takes the position of Arne Slot's assistant coach after it was vacated when John Heitinga took over as the new Ajax boss this summer. ‌ In contrast to his playing days, Valero's talents as a coach are clear to see and not just isolated to assisting goalkeepers. He was once praised by former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres for helping to improve his finishing. Speaking in 2008, Torres said: "We've a Spanish goalkeeping coach and he has been a genius at telling me every week exactly what kind of task lies in front of me in the following match. Nobody has ever worked with me like this before. It's outstanding. "Basically, I know days before the next game exactly the best way to finish a chance against the keeper I'm about to face. Xavi Valero tells me precisely what each keeper tends to do – stay big, go down early, if they have a preferred side they try to push you to. It's vital information. I've refined the way I take chances as a result." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. West Ham vs Chelsea fixture moved as police grant Sky Sports request

Chelsea are set to take on West Ham on the second weekend of the new Premier League season but the game could be set to kick off at a different time than originally planned Chelsea are set to have their first two Premier League fixtures moved after police granted a request for their clash vs West Ham. The Blues are set to take on FA Cup winners Crystal Palace on the opening weekend, with that game due to take place on Sunday, August 17, at 2pm. And it now appears that their first away game of the season against West Ham is also set to be moved a day sooner. Sky Sports are reportedly keen to move the game to Friday, August 22, one day before it was originally set to take place. ‌ Should that request be granted, the game will kick-off at 8pm on the Friday to give it prime position for broadcasting. There would have previously been concerns of crowd trouble between the two sets of fans, given the historic rivalry between the sides, as well as the fact that fans can spend longer drinking due to the late kick-off. ‌ But according to Mail Online, police in London believe they can cope with a switch. The rescheduled game still needs to get approval from the Safety Advisory Group, which is made up of officials from clubs, emergency services and the local council. With agreement from the police, that green light should become a formality. A statement from the Metropolitan Police read: 'The Met works closely with partners and clubs to ensure the safety and security of those attending football matches in London, and those in the wider community. We want everyone to come and enjoy themselves and will act decisively to deal with anyone intent on causing trouble.' Chelsea still have plenty of football to play out before they even start considering their Premier League commitments. They are set to take on Brazilian side Palmeiras in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup, while they also have a number of pre-season friendlies scheduled. They are set to take on Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan. West Ham in the meantime face a hectic pre-season fixture schedule with games against Grasshoppers, Manchester United, Everton, Bournemouth and Lille all set to come. Meanwhile, Sky Sports and TNT Sports have dished out their fixtures for the opening weekend of the season. Reigning champions Liverpool take on Bournemouth on Friday, August 15 - that game set to be broadcast on Sky Sports. ‌ TNT's first offering of the season sees Aston Villa host Newcastle, while Sky Sports will broadcast Wolves vs Manchester City on the Saturday evening. There are three games due to be broadcast on Sunday, with Manchester United vs Arsenal being the standout, while Nottingham Forest also host Brentford. Leeds United 's Premier League return rounds off the opening weekend as they welcome Everton to Elland Road on Monday, August 18.

Q&A: Have City become too predictable?

In the final part of Wednesday's Q&A with our Shamoon Hafez, we focus on the challenges Pep Guardiola's side face when coming up against opponents who sit in a low block asked: Are Manchester City now too predictable to play against? New signings can only make a difference if the way City play changes to max out the new expertise in the team. Surely City are not wedded to a system or process and are driven by success?Shamoon: It is a fair suggestion to say City have become somewhat predictable. We only need to look at the FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace and the goallless draw at rock bottom Southampton for recent examples of that, and then the loss to up against that low block - a team happy to sit back, soak up the pressure then hit City on the counter - is turning into a real conundrum for Guardiola to they have had the magic of Kevin de Bruyne to unlock the defence, but which player in this City squad possesses that quality? Rayan Cherki's pass for Phil Foden's goal on Monday was delightful, but can he conjure that up on regular basis?
