Bernardo Silva makes vow to Man City team-mates after 'biggest honour of career'

Bernardo Silva has been named Manchester City captain for the forthcoming season and is aiming to follow in the footsteps of club icons as he attempts to restore the side back at the top of the Premier League Bernardo Silva is determined to leave a legacy for Manchester City's next generation. City captain Silva has been a huge part of the club's most successful era as Pep Guardiola's men have won every trophy, rewritten the history books and set new records. After finishing last season empty-handed, they are determined to prove they are well and truly back by winning the Club World Cup. But the far bigger target is to create a pathway for the stars of tomorrow in the way the likes of Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero did for him. ‌ It is beginning to feel like a new City team, Pep's 3.0 and a new generation ready for success with Silva insisting that being given the captain's armband is not just an honour but there is a responsibility among the established stars to help guide the younger players. ‌ Silva, 30, said: 'Well, it's part of life. We've had a team that passed when I'm going to talk about players that were so important for this club and left. Like Vincent, like David Silva, Fernandinho, Kun Agüero, Yaya Touré. 'The club always finds new solutions, a new generation of players that has to keep putting this club in the right path up at the top. And yeah, it's nice that we have new blood in the team. These guys have a lot of energy, have a lot of quality. 'Being made captain is probably one of the biggest honours of my career. We went through a lot of fantastic moments and some disappointments as well. All that experience, I will try to pass it to the younger guys. But the leadership in a team, it's not about one guy. 'I'm counting on Ruben Dias, on Rodri, on Erling Haaland, on all the guys to help me. Because I will need that help to help the team achieve a lot of things and hopefully win titles. 'It's up to us, the older ones to give them the right path to achieve the good things. And then for them to take our place and perform at the club. 'And hopefully in a few years, it's their turn to show the young guys what to do. But it's definitely really nice to have them with us. They're great guys and they're working a lot, which is very important.' ‌ Can Man City win the Premier League next season? Share your thoughts in the comments below City have blended in new boys Rayan Aït-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders in their Club World Cup campaign and they have made a seamless transition. ‌ Last season City lost the FA Cup final, lost their grasp on the Premier League title after winning it four times in a row and also crashing out early from the Champions League which they won just a couple of years ago. It begged the obvious question as to whether City boss Guardiola had lost his dominance and if City were no longer the team to beat in English football after Liverpool 's title success. And yet they have looked very impressive in the Club World Cup and are now eyeing a last 16 tie in Orlando on Monday with a route to the final stages of the tournament. ‌ They put five past Juventus in their final Group match. It would also be one hell of a mission statement if City can win the trophy - and it would also go a long way to showing they are back. Silva added: 'We've always been potential winners in all competitions that we play. Obviously it's just one game, but we're happy that the performance was the way it was. It shows that we're improving, we're coming back to the levels and to the standards that we got people used to at this club. ‌ 'That's good. That's a good sign for next season. Not only for this competition, but we want to build to the whole season, to the whole year. 'Because what happened last year was quite disappointing for all of us. We want to change, we want to be better. This was a great performance and it shows that we can do it again.'

Manchester City beats Juventus 5-2 to win Group G of Club World Cup

ORLANDO: Manchester City won Group G of the Club World Cup with a dominant performance on Thursday, beating Juventus 5-2 at Camping World Stadium. Man City went ahead 2-1 on an own goal in the 26th minute when defender Pierre Kalulu, attempting to intercept a pass at close range, sent the ball into the net. The rout was on from there. Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Savinho scored in the second half to make it 5-1. Haaland's goal was the 300th of his career. Man City midfielder Rodri, last year's Ballon d'Or winner, made his first start since he had knee ligament surgery in September. He left for a substitute in the 66th minute. Jeremy Doku opened the scoring for Man City in the ninth minute, and Teun Koopmeiners equalized two minutes later. Dusan Vlahovic scored in the 84th minute for the Italian club, which finished second in the group.

Pep Guardiola hails Man City after impressive win over Juventus

Erling Haaland scored his 300th career goal and Rodri played 66 minutes on his first start since September as City moved through the gears at Orlando's Camping World Stadium on Thursday. City defied intense heat and a later torrential downpour to sweep aside a Juventus team that beat them 2-0 in the Champions League last season. A simply outstanding display! 🩵 🦓 2-5 🩵 #FIFACWC — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 26, 2025 Guardiola's team looked more like the all-conquering outfit they have been for much of the Spaniard's reign rather than the ponderous side that laboured through much of the 2024-25 campaign. The statement victory ensured they won Group G with a 100 per cent record and theoretically secured a more favourable route through a tournament they must now be among the favourites to win. City manager Guardiola said: 'I liked the way we did it. It has been a long time since we had a performance like this on and off the ball. The players were committed and we are happy to beat a top side. 'This is just one game but I think the players felt again what it was like to be a good team. It's the first time we've performed the way we can. 'We won the last two but we adjusted a few things. I'm really pleased because the players realise what we have to do to get back to what we were in the last decade. 'The belief always comes from your performances, not your past.' The loss of Rodri with a serious knee injury for the majority of last season was one of the key reasons for their failure to match the standards of the past. After winning the Premier League for the previous four years, City failed to mount a strong title defence and exited the Champions League before the last 16. His appearance in Orlando represented a notable step up in his comeback after three substitute outings. Guardiola said: 'Sooner or later Rodri had to start. I said, 'OK, 45 minutes' but at half-time he said he wanted five to 10 minutes more. The game was under control. 'In the last few games we have conceded a lot of transitions but it didn't happen this time. Everyone knows how important Rodri is. He is one of the best players in the world.' City's early opener from Jeremy Doku was cancelled out by Teun Koopmeiners after an Ederson error but a Pierre Kalulu own goal restored the English side's lead. Haaland, Phil Foden and Savinho all struck in the second half as City made victory certain before a Dusan Vlahovic consolation. An electric performance ⚡️@JeremyDoku is your Man of the Match! ✨ — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 26, 2025 Away from the tournament, City midfielder Jack Grealish has not travelled to the United States. Guardiola had little to say on reports linking the England international with Bayern Munich. He said: 'I wish him the best but I don't know what is going to happen.'.
