The real protection gap
SA's short-term insurance gap refers to the difference between what individuals or businesses could lose during an insurable event, such as a flood, car accident or burglary, and the portion of those losses that are insured. Small businesses and low-income households are especially affected, often operating with minimal to no protection.
According to Naicker, the issue is twofold. 'There's one group of people who could technically afford insurance but choose not to, often because they think it costs too much. Then there's a much larger group who simply can't afford full coverage at all. In both cases, there's often little understanding of how customisable insurance can be made affordable.
'People view insurance as a luxury, something that can be cancelled when there is financial pressure. The reality is that most accidents and losses are caused by things out of your control, like someone else's poor driving, infrastructure failures or extreme weather conditions,' he says. 'That's why cover still matters.'
Tailored cover is better than none
Without a savings buffer, South Africans risk long-term setbacks if their vehicles or homes are damaged or destroyed. For small business owners, it could mean the collapse of a livelihood built over years.
The economic knock-on effects are also significant. 'If a small business has no cover and suffers a major loss, it can't serve its customers, pay staff or contribute to the economy. The ripple effect is serious,' says Naicker. 'That's why I believe insurance should be treated as a basic cost of doing business — something that gets built into your pricing from the start.'
Miway encourages people to explore flexible insurance options that suit their budget and needs. 'Especially during revolving life changes, we encourage you to keep your assets covered,' says Naicker. 'Your monthly premium can be reduced by increasing your excess or choosing a lower level of cover. It's always better to have some cover than to have nothing at all.'
Insurance: smart protection for a changing world
The nature of risk is also evolving, with extreme weather events becoming more frequent and severe. The record-breaking April 2022 floods in KwaZulu-Natal, for example, caused billions in damages. Add to that the ongoing threat of load-shedding, which can lead to power surges damaging appliances and compromised security systems.

'[While cover from the government-owned] South African Special Risks Insurance Association plays a critical role in protecting against damage caused by risks such as civil unrest, looting, and strikes, it is vital for consumers to understand that this cover is only accessible through their existing personal or business insurance policies,' says Naicker.
At Miway, adapting to this changing risk landscape means offering insurance that is not only relevant but also rewarding. The airline maintains that its pilot utilisation is well within industry norms and not excessive. How did the strike escalate? The union initially called for a one-day strike, timed to coincide with the end of the school holidays. In response, FlySafair issued a defensive lockout, a standard labour protocol. Due to the nature of airline rostering, this meant affected pilots would not be rostered for seven days. Solidarity then escalated the action to a two-week strike. FlySafair has not rejected CCMA intervention and continues to engage with the commission and the union in good faith. Commitment to customers and staff FlySafair acknowledges the disruption caused to customers and is working to minimise the impact. The airline also highlights its responsibility to its other employees, whose livelihoods are linked to the company's financial sustainability. 'We're committed to finding a resolution that balances fair compensation with operational sustainability and affordability for South African travellers,' says Gordon.

The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) has issued a warning to the public regarding a Telegram group falsely operating under the name 'PSG Wealth (Pty) Ltd'. The group misleadingly claims to be affiliated with PSG Wealth Financial Planning (Pty) Ltd (FSP number 728) and its representative, Elke Brink. According to the FSCA, multiple reports have been received about the group soliciting money from unsuspecting individuals. Notably, the administrators are impersonating Brink and offering guaranteed returns of up to 100%, a clear red flag. In a statement, PSG Wealth confirmed it has no association with the Telegram group or the individuals behind it. The firm also clarified that it does not conduct any business via the Telegram platform. 'The public must understand that PSG Wealth and Ms Brink are not in any way connected to this group. Any claims suggesting otherwise are unequivocally false,' says PSG. Although the FSCA refrained from commenting on the group's exact operations, it confirmed that the administrators are not authorised under any financial sector law to offer financial services in South Africa. A recent report found Gauteng's high tenant rate resulted in the most intra-province moves while the Cape absorbed the most newcomers. The people of Johannesburg are constantly on the move, whether within their own city or in search of opportunity elsewhere. A recent report showed that of all those changing addresses, the majority were done so by those moving within or out of Gauteng. However, Cape Town was the biggest recipient of new residents with almost half coming from either Johannesburg or Pretoria. Johannesburg trends The Wise Move Migration Report 2025 stated that of all South Africans changing address, 70% stayed in the same province. Gauteng accounted for 60% of the intra-province relocations and for those choosing Johannesburg, just over 60% of moves were directed at three areas of the city. Sandton was the overwhelming favourite with 26.5% of the moves, followed by Johannesburg Central and Randburg with 18.7% and 16.5%, respectively. Midrand and Roodepoort made up sizeable chunks with 11.2% and 10.1% each, with Roodepoort popular for its mix of affordability and access to nature. The East Rand had a more scattered spread of relocations, with Boksburg, Kempton Park, Germiston, Edenvale and Benoni hovering between 3 and 4% each. Cape popularity However, 48% of all relocations across provincial borders were people leaving Gauteng for Cape Town. 'This trend highlights the magnetic pull of the Western Cape's coastal lifestyle, economic opportunities, and quality of life,' stated Wise Move CEO and co-founder Chante Venter. While Cape Town absorbed the vast majority of Western Cape semigration, 5% of the incomers moved to the West Coast, and another 9% chose towns along the Garden Route. Other key insights include 30% of relocation traffic occurring between November and January, with Wednesday being the least popular day to move. Females made up almost 57% of those relocating, while those aged between 25 and 44 accounting for 55.5% of movers. Lower rentals in Gauteng Accompanying the influx to the Cape, the Tenant Payment Network (TPN) reported a boost in the Gauteng rental market where 37.8% of households were tenants. Property24 highlighted that property prices in Gauteng were roughly 27% lower than those of a comparable property in the Cape, while rentals in Gauteng were approximately 20% lower. Additionally, building completions in Gauteng declined by 30% in the last financial year compared to a 24% rise in new building completions in Cape Town, while largely served high-income investors.
