The Open: Weather stops Monday play early after Rory McIlroy addresses 2019 Portrush nightmare

We'll bring you updates here across the week
Gareth Hanna and Adam McKendry
Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have both faced the media for their preview press conferences ahead of The Open at Royal Portrush.
McIlroy spoke of his disastrous opening round 79 in 2019, while Lowry reacted to the mural in Portrush featuring an image of the Offaly man clutching the Claret Jug.
The Open at Royal Portrush: What happened in 2019?
Out on the course, a two-hour delay over lunch-time due to thunderstorms did little to dampen spirits as the likes of world number one Scottie Scheffler, English Tommy Fleetwood and Rory's fellow Holywood star Tom McKibbin were all seen among a host of others.
However, a second stoppage in play after 5pm then brought a premature end to the day's action, with fans hoping for better weather as players return for the third official practice day on Tuesday.
It all meant McIlroy's decision to turn up early and 'beat the crowds' looked even more inspired as the likes of Scheffler now are faced to shift their plans to make up for interrupted practice.
They'll be back on Tuesday to try again, with the tee sheet featuring the likes of Phil Mickelson (7.12am), Justin Thomas (7.36am), Scheffler (9am), Patrick Reed (10.24am), Tony Finau, (11.12am), Padraig Harrington (11.12am), Brooks Koepka (11.36am), Robert MacIntyre (11.48am), Collin Morikawa (12.48pm), Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm (both 1.24pm), Tommy Fleetwood (2.12pm) and Lee Westwood (2.24pm).

They tend to keep it quiet, as Rory openly admitted at his press conference. So keep an eye out, and we'll be back here bright and early in the morning to keep you posted with what's going on.

Monday play finished
And that's your lot from Monday. We've just got confirmation that players will not be returning to the course this evening and the second stoppage for dangerous weather conditions - with storms in the area - has called a premature halt.

Play suspended again - will the players come back?
The hooter goes and the players are coming back in off the course for a second time as another weather warning hits. Apparently there's the threat of lightning in the area. We're trying to find out what's happening and if or when the players will be back on the course this evening.

Field change
We have had a withdrawal from the field for this week's tournament as England's Paul Waring has pulled out due to a shoulder injury and has been replaced by the USA's Davis Riley.
The 28-year-old is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour having won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with partner Nick Hardy in 2023 and then the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, while he has already impressed in the Majors this year having finished in the top-20 at the PGA Championship after starting the final round in a share of third.

Out on the course? Head towards hole 5
So we're just getting our bearings after the rain delay dn the pressers and finding out which players are where. If you're out on the course, you could do worse than heading to the fifth. It's a great hole sloping down towards White Rocks beach, with Tommy Fleetwood heading up the fourth now, Rickie Fowler coming behind, following by Dustin Johnson and Sergio Garcia with Brooks Koepka a group further back.
Full house
Tom McKibbin has completed the Irish line-up of Irish players at Royal Portrush as he has been spotted on the putting green after arriving from LIV's event in Andalucia, meaning the quintet are all here.
McKibbin, Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke form the contingent hailing from north of the border, with Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington the two from the south.

Do you keep everything the same as 2019, like are you staying in the same place as six years ago?
"Different house. I am a little superstitious but I won't do anything like that. I do go for a chat with my coach every evening so we'll always do that."

Thoughts on the weather
"I'm getting old and soft so I like nice weather. Today is perfect, that's a good Open test out there. When it gets showery and heavy downpours, you can get unlucky. A nice stiff breeze and a little bit of rain is OK. If you go back to 2019, we got blessed with the weather here in 2019 and I shot 63 and won the tournament. When you get to an Open, you take what you get (weather wise) and make the best of it."
Can you contrast how the course is playing compared to 2019?
"It's a little firmer than it was, so we're going to have some rain over the next few days so I don't know what effect that will have. I'm not planning on approaching the course any differently. I forgot how well bunkered the course is and you're going to see a lot of players approaching it differently. I wouldn't sit here and tell you what the winning score will be but in today's conditions, under-par would be a good score. It's going to play a bit tougher (than 2019)."

Who is the favourite to win the The Open Championship 2025?

Golf's finest go head-to-head in the final major of the year as they arrive at Royal Portrush including Northern Ireland's very own Rory McIlroy who is surprisingly not the bookies favourite Golf's greats will once again descend on the dramatic links of Royal Portrush for the 2025 Open Championship, returning to a course that last witnessed Shane Lowry's unforgettable triumph in 2019. That year, Lowry delivered a dominant display, finishing at 15 under par—so far ahead that only nine others finished within eleven shots. His win wasn't just about handling the pressure or mastering the greens; it was a celebration of those who could drive it straight and strike pure irons, a pattern that defined the leaderboard. Reviewing the top performers from that week—Tommy Fleetwood, Tony Finau, Brooks Koepka, Lee Westwood, Rickie Fowler, Tyrrell Hatton, Danny Willett, Robert MacIntyre, and Patrick Reed—it's clear that accuracy and consistency with long clubs were prized over sheer distance or short-game heroics. Portrush is no pushover; it rewards those who can keep their ball in play and hit precise approaches while punishing even minor lapses. What made 2019 remarkable was how even the world's best found the course a stern test. Of the top six in the Official World Golf Ranking at the time, only Koepka cracked the top 20. In majors where big names often dominate, Portrush levelled the playing field—demanding unwavering quality over reputation. The layout at Royal Portrush is a true test of nerve and shot-making. When you're dialled in, there are low scores to be had. But for anyone off their game, mistakes add up quickly and dramatically. Unlike some other Open venues where scoring tends to bunch up, Portrush exposes both excellence and frailty. The opening hole alone sets nerves jangling with out-of-bounds on both sides—just ask Rory McIlroy about his experience there. Looking ahead to this year's contest, Portrush is set up perfectly for those who excel with their irons and drive it accurately. It isn't a place for players to simply overpower trouble or rely on miraculous recoveries around every green. Instead, it demands composure under pressure and technical brilliance throughout four days. In this context, Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler stand out as likely contenders. Scheffler especially seems poised for a breakthrough at The Open—his ability to find fairways and hit crisp approaches fits exactly what Portrush requires. If he can avoid the hazards that lurk off every tee and approach, he could well be lifting his first Claret Jug come Sunday. Who is the favourite to win The Open? Despite Rory McIlroy's impressive display at the Scottish Open, Scottie Scheffler is priced as the favourite to win legendary Claret Jug in Northern Ireland this weekend. The American is best priced at 6/1 with Sky Bet to win the competition in what will be only his fourth major win and first Open Championship victory. Other bookies are listing Scheffler at 5/1 including Paddy Power, Ladbrokes and Unibet while William Hill and SpreadEx have the current PGA Championship winner on 11/2. The world number one is keen to get his hands in the Jug in what has been the only major he has struggled with in comparison. This and the US Open are the remaining majors to win to secure a Career Grand Slam having already picked up the PGA Championship this year and two Green Jackets in the Masters in 2022 and 2024. The Open Championship 2025 Outright Odds Scottie Scheffler - 6/1 Rory McIlroy - 13/2 Jon Rahm - 12/1 Bryson DeChambeau - 22/1 Ludvig Aberg - 22/1 Tommy Fleetwood - 22/1 Tyrrell Hatton - 25/1 Shane Lowry - 25/1 Robert MacIntyre - 28/1 Viktor Hovland - 28/1 Collin Morikawa - 33/1 BAR - 66/1 18+ | Gamble responsibly | | Odds subject to change | Odd supplied by Sky Bet The Open Championship Betting Offers If you are on the lookout for the latest free bet offers, then look no further. As he prepares to defend his jug at Portrush this week, he said: 'I don't have any trophies at my house. They are at my parents' house, probably, or in a bank vault. 'I don't really invite people over, so am I just going to go look at them myself? 'I don't want to walk into a trophy room and say, 'Look how great I am'. Two-time Major winner Schauffele admits he did try tequila out of the Claret Jug — but insists he does not drink like the locals here on the Northern Irish coast. He said: 'I'm embarrassed to say I had a little tequila from it on holiday in Portugal — but, no, not with salt and lime because the lid barely opens. 'I've had wine out of it, but not much. I don't drink a whole lot. 'I definitely drank more after a few championships last year. 'But I'm not Irish, I know the celebrations go a bit deeper here than what I'm accustomed to! 'In my fashion, I had a cigar. I had my family. I had a few phone calls. It was a nice celebration. 'Then we were going to the Olympics shortly after. It seems whenever we play in these tournaments, you're on to the next right away. 'It's a bummer to give up the trophy this year. I'm looking forward to trying to get it back.'

Conor McGregor shares unusual morning routine after explicit photos leak

Conor McGregor has been embroiled in a leaked explicit photo scandal involving rapper Azealia Banks. Conor McGregor has posted for the first time on social media after supposed nude photos of him were leaked. The ex-two-weight UFC champion found himself in the spotlight when rapper Azealia Banks posted images on X, previously Twitter, allegedly depicting a naked McGregor working out with his private parts on show. ‌ In a video uploaded on X on Tuesday morning, the 37-year-old shared his morning ritual while aboard his yacht, which involved dunking his head in a bowl of ice-cold water with cucumber slices. ‌ Initially, the Irishman is seen declining a photo request from a fan - who appears to be waiting on the dock. He then flaunts his watch before revealing a bowl filled with ice, water, and cucumber slices. ‌ A lively McGregor then immerses his head into the bowl for a few seconds before resurfacing and repeating the process once more. McGregor, who is currently soaking up the sun in Sardinia with his family, concluded the video with a grin, announcing: "We have arrived! The McGregors have arrived!" Despite recent controversies, the 'Notorious' seemed to be in high spirits. McGregor broke his social media silence on Monday evening following allegations of sending inappropriate images to Banks. In a move that sidestepped the controversy, also posted: "Happy birthday to me." He has proceeded to repost comments from other users referencing the supposed nude images throughout the day, while also making several remarks on Irish current affairs. McGregor has previously set out his apparent intention to run for President of Ireland. This update follows an incident just a day prior, where he was spotted kissing a brunette who wasn't his fiancée, Dee Devlin. Over the weekend, he was caught on camera living it up on a Florida beach, jet skiing and then getting cosy with an unidentified woman. ‌ Photographs captured McGregor laying out a towel for her and draping an arm around her, while The Sun reported that the 'Notorious' seemed to enjoy the attention from female fans in the vicinity. Following the recent controversy surrounding the UFC icon, Devlin - McGregor's fiancée - seems to be supporting her partner despite the emergence of compromising photos. The couple, engaged since 2020 and parents to four children, remain a united front. ‌ On Monday, Devlin reposted a fan account's birthday tribute on social media, which read: "Happy Birthday to the person who always keeps Dee entertained and makes her smile." She also shared a collection of snaps with McGregor. The Dubliner has not fought since July 2021 and his June 2024 bout against Michael Chandler has not been rescheduled. ‌ Last November, a High Court civil jury found McGregor civilly liable for assaulting Nikita Hand. He faced allegations of "brutally raping and battering" Ms Hand at a hotel in south Dublin back in November 2018. McGregor maintained that their sexual interactions at the Beacon Hotel were consensual. The jury sided with her, with €248,603.60 in damages awarded. McGregor has mounted an appeal against the ruling that got underway earlier this month. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
