Injured All Blacks captain Scott Barrett ruled out of the test series against France

All Blacks captain Scott Barrett has been ruled out of New Zealand's second and third rugby tests against France after injuring his ankle in the series-opening win.
Barrett was replaced midway through the second half of the first test in Dunedin, which the All Blacks won 31–27. Scans have since revealed a tear in Barrett's calf muscle. Backrower Ardie Savea will lead the All Blacks in the second test at Wellington on Saturday. The All Blacks have yet to name a replacement for Barrett at lock.
All Blacks assistant coach Scott Hansen said Barrett is 'a massive part of the team. We're obviously disappointed to lose the skip, but we've got to go forward. We trust our depth. There is an opportunity for someone else to step up.'
Hansen said it isn't yet clear how long Barrett will be sidelined. 'We'll just take it week by week,' he said. 'He'll be keen to get back as quickly as possible, but we obviously have to do what's right for him in the injury process.'

Euro 2025: Wales Team Bus Involved in Road Traffic Crash En Route to Practice

The Wales team bus was involved in a road traffic crash on Tuesday, and its training session was canceled at the stadium where it plays France at the Women's European Championship. The Welsh Football Association said in a statement all the people involved – players and staff on the bus and in the other vehicle – were unharmed in the incident en route to the stadium in St. Gallen. Wales coach Rhian Wilkinson traveled separately from the team to the stadium for a news conference one day ahead of Wednesday's game. 'Football is secondary, and I think, yes, we are shaken because we are away from the team right now knowing that they've had to experience that,' Wilkinson said in comments reported by the BBC. FAW said its priority has been to remove the players from the scene and return to the Cymru training base to complete their preparations for tomorrow's match. Wales plays France in the second Group D game for both at Euro 2025. Wales lost to the Netherlands 3–0 on Saturday, and France beat defending champion England 2–1.

Metz Captain Udol Is Refusing to Train and Wants to Leave His Hometown Club

Newly promoted Ligue 1 club Metz is in an awkward position because captain Matthieu Udol is refusing to train and wants to leave. Udol was born in Metz and has played almost his entire career for his hometown club, making 185 appearances since 2015 as a solid left back. But he did not turn up when preseason training began on Monday, putting coach Stéphane Le Mignan in a difficult spot. 'We're disappointed that he's not with us and it's upsetting because he's our captain,' Le Mignan said on Tuesday at a news conference. 'I spoke to him on the phone before the restart and he told me he wanted to leave. It's not a pleasant situation but we're here to move forward, so I'm focusing on the pitch and the players who want to work.' Udol has two years left on his contract and Metz could make some much-needed money selling him, with budgets restricted amid low TV revenue this season. Le Mignan is feeling somewhat torn though, saying Metz stuck by Udol through several knee injuries. 'We have a player who has been loyal to the club, but the club has also been loyal (to him) in difficult situations,' Le Mignan said. 'I have discussed this with the president, of course, because it is very important both from a sporting and financial point of view. I don't know how the situation will develop.' Midfielder Gauthier Hein, the club's key player when it won a relegation–promotion playoff against Reims in May to earn promotion, is also caught in two minds. 'We need Matthieu in the team this season and we would be very happy if he stayed,' Hein said. 'But as his best friend I also have to think about his well-being as a person (and) I want him to flourish no matter where.' Metz starts its campaign in mid-August at home to Strasbourg.

Lolesio's Surgery 'Successful' After Unspecified Injury in Wallabies Win Over Fiji

Australia flyhalf Noah Lolesio has had surgery on an unspecified injury sustained in the 21–18 comeback win over Fiji last weekend and has been sidelined ahead of the three-test series against the British and Irish Lions. Rugby Australia issued a statement on Tuesday confirming Lolesio has had successful surgery today. The playmaker was discharged from the hospital on Sunday a day after the game then readmitted after a medical follow-up. The back of his head hit the ground with force during the second half against Fiji in Newcastle north of Sydney. Rugby Australia didn't release details of the injury or the timeframe for Lolesio's recovery. Australian media reported Lolesio underwent spinal surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery and will spend a period of time away from the game during his rehabilitation, Rugby Australia said. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt said in a statement, 'Firstly, we were relieved that Noah was up and moving well when he returned to the team hotel after his initial hospital visit in Newcastle on Sunday. Further to that, it's an added relief for everyone, especially his family, that successful surgery now has him on the road to recovery.' The first test between Australia and the Lions is on July 19 in Brisbane.
