Britain's most beautiful coastal views named - from St Ives to Robin Hood's Bay

North Wales Live12 hours ago
St Ives, Robin Hood's Bay and Padstow have been named among the UK's most cherished coastal spots, celebrated for their breathtaking views.
A survey of 2,000 adults also highlighted favourites such as the South Downs' expansive 100-mile stretch, Weymouth's elegant Georgian seafront, and Pembrokeshire 's own limestone cliff haven, Lydstep.
The top 30 list, compiled by holiday company Haven, also features Devon's yachting hotspot Salcombe and the North East's seaside town of Berwick. The research found that more than two-thirds of people believe the UK's coastal scenery easily rivals that found abroad.
When it comes to staycations, eight out of ten people consider accommodation with a sea view important, with over a third saying it's essential.
Simon Palethorpe, CEO at Haven, said: 'You don't need to go far from home to enjoy postcard-perfect views. Our parks are set on some of Britain's most stunning beaches and coastlines, making them a great base for exploring the local area and enjoying the seaside.
"There's nothing better than starting and ending your day with a sunrise or sunset over the sea—especially when it's right here in the UK. Brits are still surprised by just how breathtaking our coastline can be.'
The survey also revealed that holidaymakers are willing to travel an average of 159 miles for a seaside break, with many prepared to pay extra for a room with a view.
The main reasons for splashing out on a sea view were the sense of relaxation and escapism it provides, as well as the proven mental and physical health benefits of being by the coast.
Other reasons for choosing a UK holiday over going abroad included avoiding airport stress and delays, having more flexibility with dates and duration, and being able to bring pets along.

The new direct train line set to connect the UK to a European city for the first time

Plus, the new European rail service launching next year linking two major cities TRACK ON The new direct train line set to connect the UK to a European city for the first time Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE Government has revealed plans for a new rail link between London and a new European country. The UK and Germany have joined forces to create a direct rail route to Berlin. For Brits, this meant they could be exploring the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie "in just a matter of years", according to Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander. The secretary added: "This landmark agreement – part of a new treaty the Prime Minister will sign with Chancellor Merz today - has the potential to fundamentally change how millions of people travel between our two countries, offering a faster, more convenient and significantly greener alternative to flying. "A new task force will bring our nations closer together and create new opportunities for tourism, business and cultural exchange, building on a landmark deal we signed earlier this year to explore introducing direct services to Switzerland." The plans are also set to give the UK a big economic boost, with the creation of jobs and strengthened trade links. Alexander added: "This is central to our Plan for Change – breaking down barriers, thinking boldly about the future, and making long-term decisions that better connect Britain to the world. "Working with Germany, we're building bridges between our people and paving the way for a more sustainable, connected future." It has not been made clear where the new train service would depart from in London. Currently, St Pancras International is the only London station that provides direct international passenger trains, including ones that connect to Germany - via a change in Brussels. This is due to St Pancras being the terminus for High Speed 1 (HS1) - the only high-speed rail line in the UK that connects to the Channel Tunnel. Currently, St Pancras International is the only London station that provides direct international passenger train services, including those that connect (via a change in Brussels) to Germany. This is because St Pancras is the final station for High Speed 1 (HS1) - the only high-speed rail line in the UK that connects to the Channel Tunnel on the UK side. However, Stratford International and Ebbsfleet International stations both sit on the HS1 line. In theory, both of these places could handle international services. However, the Eurostar - which is the main operator through the Channel Tunnel - has not served these stations since the Covid-19 pandemic. 5 Services to Europe run from St Pancras International in London at the moment Credit: Getty Eurostar has also announced plans to create direct trains from London to Frankfurt in Germany and Geneva in Switzerland in the early 2030s - which would still likely depart from St Pancras International. A new high-speed line known as High Speed 2 (HS2) is under construction in the UK. Whilst the line will primarily be used for travel within the UK, such as linking London to the West Midlands, there have been some discussions about a link between HS1 and HS2. If this link were to be built, it could allow for direct international services from other parts of the UK via HS2. New European rail service A NEW European train service, launching next year, will connect Prague, Berlin, and Copenhagen, marking the first direct route between Prague and Copenhagen in a decade. Operated by Czech, German, and Danish rail companies, the service will primarily run twice daily. The journey from Prague to Copenhagen will take around 11hours - a duration expected to decrease with the completion of the Fehmarn Belt Undersea Tunnel. Onboard, passengers can enjoy a dining car, a children's cinema, and improved mobile signal. The ComfortJet trains will also offer space for bikes and be wheelchair accessible. This initiative is one of 10 pilot projects supported by the European Commission to enhance cross-border rail travel. The construction of HS2 is also behind schedule and the Government confirmed in June that the completion of the line would now be delayed beyond the target date of 2033. Plus, a gamechanger new budget train line is to launch from London next year.

The Scottish harbour town near lovely beach that was named 'best place to retire'

It offers stunning scenery and plenty of amenities. Deciding where to live after retirement is a major life decision. There are many things to consider when choosing where to enjoy your post-work years. ‌ For some people, scenery and amenities are the most important thing to consider. For many others, it all comes down to affordability. ‌ As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, one destination that was previously crowned the best place to retire in the country by Fabulous Vegas is Kirkcudbright. The town is situated in Dumfries and Galloway, which was named as having the highest proportion of over 65s in Scotland. ‌ As we reported, the average price of a house in Dumfries and Galloway was found to be £185,938. This placed it as the 10th most affordable local authority in Scotland. Kirkcudbright is a harbour town that is nestled along the Solway coast. It has long been a popular destination amongst artists going back to the 19th century —earning it the nickname of the 'The Artists Town'—and to this day there are still various galleries dotted around town. Other than its arts heritage, Kirkcudbright is perhaps best known for its incredible scenery. The town features a wide range of medieval, Georgian, and Victorian buildings that make it a joy to walk around. ‌ It isn't just its architecture that makes Kirkcudbright picturesque. It also offers plenty of beauty spots and walks to get out and explore. One of the prettiest spots around town is Kirkcudbright Harbour, which is the busiest commercial fishing harbour in Dumfries and Galloway. Despite this, it is still a peaceful spot to stop and watch the world go by. ‌ Another scenic point near Kirkcudbright is Dhoon Beach, which can be reached in less than 10 minutes by car. The beach is dog-friendly, and is also a great spot for a swim. Elsewhere, history lovers will love visiting MacLellan's Castle in the heart of Kirkcudbright. While there is currently no visitor access to the castle itself due to masonry inspections, the grounds are great to walk around—offering plenty of up-close views of the 16th century tower house. ‌ Other top attractions around town are the Kirkcudbright Dark Space Planetarium and the Stewartry Museum. The Kirkcudbright Dark Space Planetarium offers visitors a chance to experience space exploration through an interactive exhibit, while the Stewartry Museum details the history of the local area. ‌ Kirkcudbright also features a thriving food scene, for those who enjoy eating out. Whether you are a fan of a chic brunch or a no-frills pub meal, there is something for you. One of the top food spots around town is the restaurant at the Selkirk Arms Hotel. Open for lunch and dinner daily, it specialises in fresh and local Scottish cuisine with a Mediterranean flair. ‌ Meanwhile, the Masonic Arms is a cosy little pub that is tucked away on one of Kirkcudbright's streets. The bar, which features stylish contemporary interiors, serves up one of the widest selections of draught lagers and beers in the region. When it comes to cafés in Kirkcudbright, one popular spot is Mullberries. The venue serves up an assortment of breakfast and lunch dishes, as well as plenty of sweet treats and hot drinks. More information about what you can get up to around Kirkcudbright can be found on the Visit Kirkcudbright website.
