S&P 500 Gains and Losses Today: Verizon Shares Surge; Natural Gas Stocks Fall

Major indexes posted modest gains Monday as investors prepared for a major wave of earnings reports set for release throughout the week, including results from big names such as Tesla (TSLA) and Coca-Cola (KO). The S&P 500 gained 0.1%, reaching an all-time closing high as the new trading week got underway. The Nasdaq added 0.4%, extending an impressive streak of record closes that dates back to the beginning of last week. After trading in positive territory for most of the session, the Dow lost ground in the afternoon to close with a minor loss. Verizon Communications (VZ) shares jumped 4%, gaining the most of any stock in the S&P 500. The telecommunications giant topped second-quarter sales and profit estimates and lifted the low end of the range for its full-year profit forecast. Stronger-than-expected gains in broadband internet subscribers and an increase in wireless retail core prepaid customers helped drive Verizon's strong quarterly performance. Hershey (HSY) shares gained 3.2% on Monday, adding to gains posted late last week after U.S. Census Bureau data showed a stronger-than-expected uptick in retail sales in June. The indication of sustained consumer spending despite tariff concerns represents a welcome demand signal for the chocolate maker, which has been navigating challenges related to high cocoa prices. Gold prices reached their highest level in more than a month, boosted by a weakening U.S. dollar, uncertainty ahead of President Trump's Aug. 1 tariff deadline, and anticipation of the Fed potentially edging toward interest-rate cuts later in the year. Shares of Newmont (NEM), the world's largest gold mining company, advanced 2.9%. Shares of Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL) were up 2.7% ahead of the tech giant's quarterly earnings release, set for Wednesday afternoon. Analysts at Morgan Stanley and Bank of America lifted their price targets on Alphabet stock ahead of the report, highlighting growth expectations driven by generative AI and ad spending in Google search. Natural gas futures prices dropped around 7%, pressured by elevated production levels and forecasts for cooler summer temperatures in parts of the U.S., reducing demand for natural gas to power air conditioners. Shares of natural gas companies dominated the list of the S&P 500's weakest performers on Monday. EQT Corp. (EQT) stock dropped 9.5%, falling the furthest of any constituent in the benchmark index. Expand Energy (EXE) shares were down 8.5%, while fellow natural gas players Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Targa Resources (TRGP) also lost ground. Shares of Molina Healthcare (MOH) lost 3.6% after analysts at TD Cowen cut their price target on the insurer's stock. Analysts also reduced their full-year earnings estimate for Molina, noting that high medical costs are pressuring the company's medical loss ratio, or the percentage of premiums an insurer pays out on healthcare claims. The slide for Molina stock on Monday extended steep losses posted late last week after competitor Elevance Health (ELV) cut its full-year guidance, citing high Medicaid and Affordable Care Act costs. Here's How Much Traders Expect Tesla Stock To Move After Earnings Wednesday

Tesla (TSLA) is scheduled to report its second-quarter results after the market closes on Wednesday, with investors expecting the electric vehicle maker's stock to make a sizable move after the report. Based on recent options pricing, Tesla stock is seen moving close to 7% or almost $22 in either direction from Monday's close near $329 by the end of this week's trading sessions. At the high end, that would leave Tesla stock at just over $350, with the low end falling at roughly $307. Tesla shares rose 5.4% the day after the electric vehicle maker's first-quarter report, when CEO Elon Musk told investors he was weeks away from leaving his work with the Trump administration. They gained nearly 3% following Tesla's January fourth-quarter report, after surging nearly 22% and falling 12.3%, respectively, after each of the two previous quarters' earnings. Tesla shares have lost nearly 20% of their value since the start of this year. They have recovered from the lows they experienced in March and April when Tesla was the subject of protests while Musk was working in the federal government, but have still been pressured in recent weeks as Musk has continued to insert himself into politics on social media. The EV giant is expected to report an over 10% decline in revenue from the same time a year ago to $22.78 billion, while adjusted earnings per share are projected to drop nearly 20% to 42 cents, per estimates compiled by Visible Alpha. Analysts have said recently the stock could respond more to Musk's comments about Tesla's recently launched robotaxi program and other projects than the company's quarterly financial results, as the shares rose earlier this month despite deliveries missing estimates. Among the analysts tracked by Visible Alpha who follow the company, eight call Tesla stock a "buy," compared with five "hold," and four "sell" ratings. Their average price target at $301 is about 8% below Monday's level. Sanctions to be introduced to target people-smuggling gangs

Gang leaders, corrupt police officers and companies selling small boat equipment for Channel crossings could face having their assets frozen and being banned from travel to the UK in efforts to curb the people-smuggling trade. The Foreign Secretary announced on Tuesday a raft of sanctions that will be introduced to target anyone involved in assisting illegal immigration to the UK. This ranges from those involved in supplying and financing small boats, fake passports, and 'middlemen' putting cash through the Hawala system, a legal money transfer system, which is also used in payments linked to Channel crossings. The first wave of sanctions comes into force on Wednesday, and will publicly name anyone sanctioned, so it will be illegal for UK businesses and banks to deal with them. The measure is expected to include more than 20 designations, and could include corrupt public officials and police officers in steps to tackle the multi-billion-dollar industry. Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: 'For too long, criminal gangs have been lining their corrupt pockets and preying on the hopes of vulnerable people with impunity as they drive irregular migration to the UK. We will not accept this status quo. 'That's why the UK has created the world's first sanctions regime targeted at gangs involved in people smuggling and driving irregular migration, as well as their enablers. 'From tomorrow, those involved will face having their assets frozen, being shut off from the UK financial system and banned from travelling to the UK.' It follows legislation being introduced under the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill to ramp up enforcement powers for police forces and partners to investigate and prosecute people smugglers. Fresh sanctions aim to target organised crime gangs wherever they are in the world and disrupt their flow of cash, including freezing bank accounts, property and other assets, to hinder their activities. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: 'It will allow us to target the assets and operations of people smugglers wherever they operate, cutting off their funding and dismantling their networks piece by piece. 'Through the Border Security Command and key partners like the National Crime Agency, we are strengthening our ties with other nations to tackle this global problem. 'Together, we are sending a clear message that there is no hiding place for those who exploit vulnerable people and put lives at risk for profit.'
