Lack of assistants mounts pressure on veterinarians in Dharmapuri
DHARMAPURI: Farmers are distressed by the lack of personnel in veterinary dispensaries located across the district to assist veterinarians. Farmers said that due to a lack of personnel, the quality of treatment offered to farmers affected, and urged the state government to appoint veterinary assistants as soon as possible.
The district has about 3.6 lakh cattle and over 5 lakh sheep, goats, and other milch animals. To ensure livestock are properly taken care of, the animal husbandry department has opened 80 veterinary dispensaries across the district. While each of these dispensaries has skilled doctors to treat ailing livestock, these doctors lack assistants or aides to help them perform basic duties. Farmers urged the appointment of veterinary assistants.
State President of the Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam, SA Chinnasamy, said, "With the administration gearing up for the foot-and-mouth disease vaccination drive next month, we need to address the severe shortage of staff in veterinary dispensaries. Over 3.45 lakh animals with hooves will be vaccinated, and we need people capable of handling them. Currently, apart from doctors, there are no other staff in the dispensaries. Without proper aid, farmers are posing as assistants now, and this impacts treatment. Moreover, it is extremely tedious for doctors to handle all the work."
Another farmer, S Venkatesan from Palacode, said, "Be it for insemination or delivering vaccines, we need professionals who can assist the veterinarians. The state government must appoint at least two assistants in each dispensary to ensure their proper functioning. Further, infrastructure and equipment in dispensaries must improve, and people must be appointed in a temporary capacity during the FMD drive to ensure the 100% vaccination target."
Officials in the animal husbandry department who commented on the matter said, "We have already notified the requirement of more staff, and the state government is also taking necessary steps."

Vaccination of cows and buffaloes against Foot-and-Mouth disease(FMD) under National Cattle Disease Control programme in Virudhunagar district would be held from July 2 to July 22. In a statement, Virudhunagar Collector N.O. Sukhaputra said that milk obtained from milch animals formed a major part of the food. Besides, the meat and their hair also helps the growth of the country's economy. In this backdrop, FMD was attacking the milch animals, especially the hybrid breeds and cause substantial loss to the farmers's economy and production loss. Hence, 1.45 lakh cows and buffaloes would be vaccinated against FMD to protect them. The disease is caused by virus and it reduces the productivity among bulls and also hinders pregnancy among cows. It also causes death among young calves. Though the death due to FMD is very less, the economic loss it causes is very significant. The disease spreads during winter season. And it spreads through the cattle brought from FMD-infected areas. Unvaccinated animals and those animals which are not raised in hygienic sheds and failure to segregate the infected animals are major reasons for the spreading of the infection. The contagious disease spreads through fodder, water, through the animals and human beings. The virus would remain active for 15 days in the infected sheds and it would spread through air, milk, saliva and dung. The infected animals would have symptoms like fever and lack of fodder in-take, less milk production. Saliva would continue to drip from their mouths. Blisters would be found inside the mouth, on the tongue and the hoofs of the infected animals and would turn into injury. Infected animals face infertility and anaemia. And, calves would die on consuming milk from the infected animals. The free vaccination drive would be conducted by 51 teams at 82 animal husbandry pharmacies, six veterinary hospitals to benefit all the calves aged above four months also.

Special vaccination camps for cattle against FMD in Salem
District Collector R. Brindha Devi said that special vaccination camps will be conducted for cattle against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) from July 2 to 31. The Collector said that the Animal Husbandry Department and the Milk Producers Cooperative Society will jointly conduct the seventh round of free FMD vaccination for all livestock. FMD is a viral infectious disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals and causes fever and blisters. The disease easily spreads through unhygienic maintenance of farms and through the urine, saliva, and farm waste of infected cows. This causes infertility in cows, reduced milk production, and skin problems. It affects the productivity of bulls and increases mortality, causing huge losses to livestock farmers. In order to prevent this deadly disease, all cattle and buffaloes in the state are vaccinated free of cost every six months under the Foot and Mouth Disease Prevention Programme. Under the approved action plan, from July 2 to July 31, in Salem , the vaccination will be carried out for cattle over four months of age through 149 teams in the veterinary dispensaries, in the respective panchayats. Farmers are requested to bring their cattle on the day of vaccination and be benefitted , Ms. Devi added.

Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini approves projects and procurements worth Rs 718 crore in high-powered committees' meeting.
With box attached in CCI Chandigarh: In a major push for infrastructure and public service improvements, Haryana's High Powered Purchase Committee (HPPC) and High Powered Works Purchase Committee (HPWPC) on Friday approved projects and procurements worth ₹718 crore during a meeting that chief minister Nayab Singh Saini chaired. In a marathon session of more than 6 hours, they cleared key development works, with a focus on Gurugram and Faridabad, power infrastructure, and public health. Officials claimed to have achieved a total saving of ₹26 crore through negotiations with bidders. Power sector investments Power utilities Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (HVPNL) and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) received ₹132 crore for the manufacture and supply of transmission line towers, substation structures, and underground cables for financial year 2024-25. Additionally, ₹53.86 crore was approved under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) for strengthening power distribution and reducing AT&C losses in Ambala's Naraingarh division. Animal health and rural security The animal husbandry and dairy department secured approval for procuring 220 lakh doses of the FMD+HS dual vaccine to prevent foot-and-mouth disease and haemorrhagic septicaemia in cattle. The programme, which helps maintain Haryana's current disease-free status, will cost ₹73.45 crore. The vaccine is administered statewide twice a year to prevent outbreaks and support livestock health, officials informed. Governance and oversight Ministers Mahipal Dhanda, Vipul Goyal, Shyam Singh Rana, Ranbir Gangwa, and Shruti Choudhry were present at the meeting where CM Saini directed departments to monitor progress closely and ensure time-bound project completion.
