Lack of assistants mounts pressure on veterinarians in Dharmapuri
DHARMAPURI: Farmers are distressed by the lack of personnel in veterinary dispensaries located across the district to assist veterinarians. Farmers said that due to a lack of personnel, the quality of treatment offered to farmers affected, and urged the state government to appoint veterinary assistants as soon as possible. The district has about 3.6 lakh cattle and over 5 lakh sheep, goats, and other milch animals. To ensure livestock are properly taken care of, the animal husbandry department has opened 80 veterinary dispensaries across the district. While each of these dispensaries has skilled doctors to treat ailing livestock, these doctors lack assistants or aides to help them perform basic duties. Farmers urged the appointment of veterinary assistants. State President of the Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam, SA Chinnasamy, said, "With the administration gearing up for the foot-and-mouth disease vaccination drive next month, we need to address the severe shortage of staff in veterinary dispensaries. Over 3.45 lakh animals with hooves will be vaccinated, and we need people capable of handling them. Currently, apart from doctors, there are no other staff in the dispensaries. Without proper aid, farmers are posing as assistants now, and this impacts treatment. Moreover, it is extremely tedious for doctors to handle all the work." Another farmer, S Venkatesan from Palacode, said, "Be it for insemination or delivering vaccines, we need professionals who can assist the veterinarians. The state government must appoint at least two assistants in each dispensary to ensure their proper functioning. Further, infrastructure and equipment in dispensaries must improve, and people must be appointed in a temporary capacity during the FMD drive to ensure the 100% vaccination target." Officials in the animal husbandry department who commented on the matter said, "We have already notified the requirement of more staff, and the state government is also taking necessary steps."

CAG engaging CA firms will not compromise auditor's independence, says ICAI
Chartered accountants' apex body ICAI on Friday said the engagement of CA firms by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) will not compromise the independence of the apex auditor. The comments from ICAI comes in the backdrop of Madurai MP S Venkatesan (CPM) writing a letter to President Droupadi Murmu objecting to the CAG's plan to hire CA firms for auditing of central autonomous bodies will strengthen the auditing process. In a detailed statement, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) said the engagement of CA firms by the CAG is in no way a compromise of its independence or constitutional function. "... Rather (it is) a strategic step to ensure effective coverage, domain-specific audit quality, and timely audit execution," it said. Further, the statement said, the move is fully supported by professional standards, and ethical safeguards embedded in the ICAI's framework. "Additionally, the scheme is expected to contribute to the organisation's (CAG) capacity building which would be used to augment compliance and performance audits of the autonomous bodies," it added. In the letter to the President on June 3, the MP claimed that the move dilutes the independence of CAG and principles envisaged by the Constitution. On Thursday, Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General (Commercial) Anand Mohan Bajaj said hiring CA firms for auditing of central autonomous bodies will strengthen the auditing process. RBI should increase gold-to-loan ratio to 85%, says Tamil Nadu MP S Venkatesan
MADURAI: MP S Venkatesan, during a press meeting here on Friday, said that the RBI should increase the gold-to-loan ratio amount to 85% of its market value and return the new circular regarding the repayment of gold loans. He added that he recently met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and requested her to instruct the RBI governor to take back the new circular that was released on gold loan repayment. Following this, Sitharaman instructed the RBI that the draft regulations on gold loans do not impact small borrowers. Hence, the RBI should exempt those who have borrowed small loans up to Rs 2 lakh.' He further requested the RBI to increase the gold-to-loan amount up to 85% of its market value. Banks do not face any challenges in giving gold loans. The BJP government should right off 70 per cent of corporate loans. However, stringent rules should be implemented on the repayment of gold loans. Condemning the ASI for asking Archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna to revise his report on Keeladi excavation, Venkatesan said, 'Keeladi excavation findings are scientific evidence of Tamil ancient culture. In such a situation, it seems like the BJP is trying to hide the truth by asking Ramakrishna to revise his report.' He also stated that the CPM will organise rallies across the state from June 11 to 26 for addressing the people's issue.
