Next Dewan meeting delayed for review of GDP forecast
PETALING JAYA : The next Dewan Rakyat meeting has been delayed to allow the government to finalise its economic growth forecast in view of the US tariffs, before it is used to prepare the 13th Malaysia Plan.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul's office said the lower house of Parliament will now convene from July 21 to Aug 28 instead of June 23 to July 31.
It also noted that 2025 was shaping up to be a busy year for MPs, with various events lined up outside of parliamentary proceedings.
This includes meetings by the Public Accounts Committee and other parliamentary select committees, as well as international events.
It also said the Dewan Rakyat would convene for a total of 78 days this year, an increase from the 69 days last year.
'The Malaysian Parliament remains independent from any political leanings and always upholds the interests of the people and nation as its main priority,' it said in a statement.
Earlier today, PAS's Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari questioned the decision to delay Dewan Rakyat proceedings, saying it meant that the lower house would only convene 137 days after its last sitting on March 6.
He said this would be the third-longest period of Parliament not sitting, after the May 13 riots in 1969 (648 days) and the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns in 2021 (195 days).

KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — Singapore's new property cooling measure would have minimal impact on Malaysian-owned property projects in the republic, said Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd (HLIB). In a research note, HLIB said the measure is aimed at curbing the highly speculative segment of buyers who typically 'flip' their purchases within three years, often before the homes are even completed. It was reported that the Singaporean government announced a new property cooling measure yesterday, which applies to the seller's stamp duty (SSD) for residential properties. The measure extends the holding period from three to four years and raises rates by four percentage points per tier, effective today. HLIB expects the impact to be felt mainly in the new launch market, particularly for smaller units, which tend to attract speculative investors due to their lower quantum and perceived ease of resale. 'However, the revised SSD is relatively moderate as it simply extends the holding period by a year, from three to four years, while sales beyond the four-year mark remain exempt from the SSD. 'As such, we see the overall impact on developers as minimal, since genuine end-user demand and long-term investor interest should remain intact,' it said. However, this move signals the Singaporean government's policy direction as it leans more towards tightening rather than relaxing the cooling measures in the property market, according to the investment bank. HLIB also maintained its 'overweight' call on the sector, with its top picks including IOI Properties Group Bhd, with a target price (TP) of RM4.05, OSK Property Holdings Bhd (TP: RM2.00), Sunway (TP: RM5.90) and Sime Darby Property Bhd (RM2.05). — Bernama

Citing transparency, Selangor MB to host special briefing on Putra Heights gas blast for all lawmakers amid safety concerns
SHAH ALAM, July 4 – Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shar said he has called called for a special briefing on the recent gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights to be held this Monday for all MPs and Selangor state assemblymen. He said today that the session would be open to both Government and Opposition lawmakers to ensure that all elected representatives are properly informed about the incident. 'This state government upholds the principles of responsibility, transparency and accountability. 'We fully honour the principles and mandate of the people,' he wrote on Facebook here. Amirudin also said he had asked the Selangor State Assembly Speaker to allow the state government to present a formal explanation on the explosion during the upcoming state assembly sitting. Earlier this week, Amirudin announced the findings that the Putra Heights gas pipe explosion was caused by soil subsidence that happened over the years since it was laid in 2000, resulting in the pipe shifting by 15.9cm. Another agency involved in the investigation, the Department of Mineral and Geoscience, said it found water had accumulated in the soil underneath the pipe, which weakened the soil structure. The Petronas gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights at 8.10am on April 1 saw flames reaching heights of over 30 metres (m) with temperatures reaching 1,000 degrees Celsius, taking nearly eight hours to extinguish, and causing a 9.8m-deep crater at the incident site.

Zaharudin demands RM1.5m from Steven Sim over Facebook post dispute

In the letter dated July 3, issued by legal firm Nur Maidin & Co, Zaharudin demanded that Sim retract his allegedly defamatory remarks and issue a public apology, failing which he said the DAP leader would be sued for RM1.5 million. Advertisement 'Our client hereby demands the sum of RM1.5 million as fair and just compensation for your defamatory statements. 'Our client demands that you comply with the remedial actions immediately and in any event, no later than seven days from the date of this letter,' the lawyers said. Sim said last Thursday that he was ready to go to court to defend his criticism of Zaharudin, who described the comments by the human resources minister on his Facebook post as prejudicial. In his post, Zaharudin had speculated that Malaysia could see its first prime minister of Chinese descent in the next 30 to 40 years. Zaharudin, the son-in-law of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, also uploaded a screenshot of a news report about Johnny Lim's promotion which he said was only for illustrative purposes. The post, which was subsequently deleted, prompted accusations of racism from several quarters and criticism, including from Zaharudin's own party. Sim was among those who had called for Zaharudin to be investigated. He accused Zaharudin of fanning racial sentiments and said that he had merely spoken out against racism when criticising him. Zaharudin said he travelled from Kuala Lumpur to Sim's parliamentary service centre in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, yesterday to personally deliver the letter of demand, but was unable to do so as the office was closed. 'I went to the Bukit Mertajam MP's service centre but unfortunately, no one was there. 'He (Sim) accused me of insulting the armed forces, of being racist, and more. I've sent the letter and am now awaiting his public apology. My lawyer will also follow up by sending it via email,' he told FMT .
