Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone and inaugurated multiple infrastructure and development projects valued at approximately ₹2,200 crore in his parliamentary constituency, Varanasi. The initiatives cover sectors such as roads, power, tourism, education, health, sports, and urban rejuvenation, offering a comprehensive boost to the region's growth trajectory.
Key projects include the inauguration of widening and strengthening works on the Varanasi–Bhadohi and Chhitauni–Shool Tankeshwar roads, along with the construction of a railway overbridge at Hardattpur to ease traffic congestion on the Mohan Sarai–Adalpura stretch. Foundation stones were also laid for corridor upgrades at Dalmandi, Lahartara-Kotwa, Gangapur, and Babatpur, plus new overbridges at Level Crossing 22C and Khalispur Yard.
Over ₹880 crore was sanctioned for smart distribution and underground electrical infrastructure under the Smart Power Project to improve urban power reliability. In a cultural and tourism push, PM Modi inaugurated development of eight riverfront ghats, Kalika Dham beautification, restoration of Durgakund and Kardameshwar Mahadev Temple, and urban horticulture projects like Miyawaki forests and parks in Karkhiyaon and Shaheed Udyan.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation for educational and healthcare infrastructure including a new homeopathic college, hospital, upgrade of 53 school buildings, a district library, and a rejuvenated high school network. Health services received a boost with advanced medical facilities for robotic surgery and CT scans installed at Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital. On the welfare front, PM Modi released the 20th instalment of the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi, disbursing ₹20,500 crore directly into bank accounts of over 9.7 crore farmers nationwide. Over ₹900 crore reached beneficiaries in Varanasi alone. Additionally, more than 7,400 assistive devices were distributed to the elderly and differently-abled citizens.
Addressing the crowd, PM Modi shared his spiritual sentiment, saying he chose not to visit Baba Vishwanath Temple during the holy month of Sawan to avoid crowding devotees during the rush. He expressed deep reverence for the temple and the sacred month of Sawan.
He also commemorated the success of Operation Sindoor, attributing it to divine blessings and public unity, while affirming India's journey toward becoming the world's third-largest economy with a call to embrace 'Vocal for Local' as citizens' responsibility.

'No review of pacts, duty on US goods': MEA on speculation over India's response to Trump's tariff; 'disinformation being spread'

MEA FactCheck NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs on Sunday debunked claims doing the rounds on social media that "India is considering suspending or reviewing certain bilateral agreements with the United States if hostile economic policies continue". Posting a snapshot from two X handles -- Middle Eastern Affairs and China in English, the foreign ministry said: "Disinformation being spread on X". — MEAFactCheck (@MEAFactCheck) This comes at a time when India-US trade relations hit a bump after US President Donald Trump declared a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, even as both nations continue to negotiate a trade deal. INDIA bloc to have dinner meeting on August 7, march to EC day after

Opposition INDIA bloc leaders are likely to have a dinner meeting on August 7 to discuss strategy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) issue, sources said on Sunday. Opposition parties have expressed apprehension over the SIR exercise in Bihar, warning that it would lead to disenfranchisement of many(File/ANI) The opposition parties are also planning to take out a march to the office of the Election Commission of India on August 8 in protest against the SIR of electoral rolls exercise, they said. This comes amid a standoff on the SIR issue in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which has been a near washout as the Opposition's demand for a discussion has failed to draw a positive response from the ruling alliance. According to the sources, the INDIA bloc party leaders will hold a dinner meeting on August 7 to discuss their strategy on the SIR issue. The meeting also comes as the election for the post of Vice President has been announced, and several opposition leaders have indicated that they may also field a joint candidate. Opposition parties have expressed apprehension over the SIR exercise in Bihar, warning that it would lead to disenfranchisement of many, and have termed it as "vote-bandi" and "vote-chori". The INDIA bloc parties have been protesting inside and outside Parliament Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday cited a ruling by former Lok Sabha speaker Balram Jakhar that the House cannot debate the functioning of a constitutional body like the EC to suggest the government's disapproval of the Opposition's demand for discussion. He, however, added that it was for the chairs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to take a call on the issue. Opposition parties have, meanwhile, said they will continue their protests to press for the debate, and if the government does not agree to a discussion on the issue in Parliament, the Monsoon Session may end up being a wash-out. Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien on Sunday said the Opposition will give "tutorials" to the "shaky Modi coalition" on Parliament procedure and how to discuss the issue. The ruling BJP is "scared" of discussing the SIR underway in Bihar, he said and called the exercise "silent invisible rigging." "The SIR (Silent Invisible Rigging) vote chori is a subject that can easily be discussed in both Houses. BJP scared & are disrupting," the TMC leader said on X. "From Monday, August 4, we will give the shaky Modi coalition free tutorials in Parliament rules & procedure to teach them how it can be discussed," he added.
