How did ex-Golden State Warriors big man Robert Parish join the Boston Celtics?
How did onetime Golden State Warriors big man Robert Parish become a member of the Boston Celtics? Chief (as he was sometimes called for a nickname) started his career in the NBA's Western Conference after being drafted out of Louisiana's Centenary College, but found his footing in a major way playing alongside the likes of fellow future Boston Hall of Fame stars Larry Bird and Kevin McHale.
How did iconic Celtics general manager Red Auerbach convince the Dubs to part with the legendary big man, setting up Boston to win a trio of titles in the early and mid-1980s? Celtics beat writer emeritus Bob Ryan, eponymous cohost of the CLNS Media "Bob Ryan, Jeff Goodman, and Gary Tanguay!" podcast, took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk it over.

Celtics get positive update on Jayson Tatum's achilles rehab
Boston Celtics fans got an update on Jayson Tatum's rehab from a torn achilles earlier this week. Per Heavy's Steve Bulpett, Tatum was seen standing with Celtics assistant coach Amile Jefferson at Chris Paul's CP3 Elite camp in Las Vegas earlier this week. According to Bulpett, a scout at the event provided an update on Tatum's status, which could provide Celtics' fans with some optimism. 'He was moving really well,' Bulpett was told. 'There might have been a slight limp or something, but the surprising thing to me is that he didn't have a boot for any of it. 'I'm no doctor, but I've seen guys coming back from Achilles' tears, and he looked way ahead. I was kind of shocked to see how well he was moving.' Tatum suffered the injury during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Knicks. The Celtics would go on to lose the series in six games. While no official timetable has been given for his return, the expectation is that he will miss most of, if not all of next season. Tatum will be missed dearly for the Celtics. Last season, he averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game and was named to his sixth-career All-Star game, and fifth-career All-NBA team. The Celtics will now try to navigate next season without their superstar for most of it. Given this recent update, many Celtics fans will certainly feel better about the possibility of Tatum returning sooner than anticipated.

WNBA In Boston? Connecticut Sun Sell For Record $325 Million.
A group led by Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca reached a deal Saturday to buy the WNBA's Connecticut Sun and move the team to Boston for $325 million, a price tag that would be the largest ever for a professional women's sports franchise, according to multiple reports. If the sale and move are approved, the WNBA would expand to six new cities over the next six years. Getty Images The Pagliuca-led group will pay $325 million to acquire the Sun from the Mohegan Tribe, and Pagliuca will contribute $100 million for a new practice facility for the team to relocate from Uncasville, Connecticut, sources familiar with the transaction told the Boston Globe and Associated Press. The deal, which would move the team to Boston by 2027, still requires approval from the WNBA and the league's Board of Governors. The WNBA told Forbes in a statement that relocation decisions are made by the league's Board of Governors and not by individual teams, though the WNBA would likely prefer Boston remain a potential expansion team in 2033, the Globe reported. Forbes ranked the Sun as the second-least valuable WNBA franchise this year with a valuation of $200 million. Boston was not among the cities to bid for a WNBA expansion team, which were announced in June for Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia, the WNBA said in a statement. Other expansion franchises were previously announced for Toronto and Portland. Bill Chisholm, who purchased the Boston Celtics in a record $6.1 billion deal in March, reached out to the WNBA and asked for Boston to receive 'strong consideration' for a franchise 'at the appropriate time,' according to the league. Key Background The Connecticut Sun was purchased by the Mohegan Tribe for $10 million in 2003 and relocated from Orlando to Uncasville, Connecticut. The team plays in a casino operated by the Tribe, which became the first Native American tribe to own a professional sports franchise, and practices either at an arena inside the casino or at a local community center. The Sun have been successful during their tenure in Connecticut and have made the postseason 16 times, despite ranking last so far this season. Earlier this year, the Sun reportedly sent a letter to season ticket holders suggesting the team would still be playing at the casino next year. WNBA ripped by NBA reporter for statement on Connecticut Sun relocating to Boston
The Connecticut Sun are reportedly planning to relocate to Boston within the next two years after being sold to Former Boston Celtics owner Steve Pagliuca. The 2027-28 WNBA season is the target date for a potential move to the TD Garden. In response, the W tried to control the narrative and claim that Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia are ahead of Boston on the league's list of priorities. 'Relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams. As part of our most recent expansion process, in which three new franchises were awarded to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia on June 30, 2025, nine additional cities also applied for WNBA teams and remain under active consideration. No groups from Boston applied for a team at that time and those other cities remain under consideration based on the extensive work they did as part of the expansion process and currently have priority over Boston. Celtics' prospective owner Bill Chisholm has also reached out to the league office and asked that Boston receive strong consideration for a WNBA franchise at the appropriate time,' the league said in a statement, per the Boston Globe's Gary Washburn. Locked On Celtics' John Karalis called the statement a nothingburger. According to Karalis, the WNBA doesn't have the gall to say no to a major market like Boston. 'This is a lot of blah blah blah from the WNBA. The league is not going to keep a team at Mohegan Sun when a major market is calling,' Karalis wrote. Karalis is spot-on. The WNBA has no leverage in this situation. Cathy Engelbert told me at the 2025 American Century Championship last month that partnerships and media are the most important drivers for the WNBA's growth moving forward. 'As a sports league, one of the most important revenue sources is media and partnerships. So, on the business side of things, that would be great,' Engelbert said when I asked for her vision for the league's growth. There's infinitely more sports media coverage and business opportunities to be had in Boston than in Uncasville. We'll see if that's considered as the Sun organization faces an uncertain future in Connecticut.
