Germany's Merz says he did not expect better EU-US trade deal, German economy will suffer

BERLIN: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday he was not satisfied with the result of trade talks with the United States, but 'more simply wasn't achievable' and added the German economy would suffer 'significant' damage due to the agreed tariffs.
The trade deal announced on Sunday imposes a 15% import tariff on most EU goods - lower than the 30% once threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump but well above initial hopes of a zero-for-zero agreement.
The rate almost halves the existing tariff rate on Europe's auto sector, a cornerstone of the German economy, from 27.5%, Merz pointed out.
Brussels says EU-US deal 'better than trade war' with Trump
'But I am fully aware that the tariffs that remain — particularly the 15% versus 0% for imports into the EU — pose a serious burden for Germany's export-oriented economy,' he told a press conference in Berlin.
'I am not satisfied with this result in the sense of: 'This is good.' But I do say that, given the starting point we had with the United States, more simply wasn't achievable,' he said.
The German chancellor thanked the European Commission for its 'tireless negotiations' with its U.S. counterparts, with involvement in particular of the German, French, and Italian governments.
'I personally did not expect more than this result,' he said.

Orlando Bloom responds with humour to a spoof linking him to Angela Merkel amid Katy Perry and Trudeau buzz.

Orlando Bloom has reacted with humour to a viral satirical post following his ex-fiancée Katy Perry's public outing with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. As rumours swirl about a possible relationship between Perry and Trudeau, Bloom found himself the subject of parody after a comedic news post linked him to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The satirical post from The Onion joked: 'Just weeks after announcing his split with fiancée Katy Perry, English actor Orlando Bloom was photographed Friday dining with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Angela kept Orlando laughing all night — he couldn't keep his eyes off her!' The fictional scene described the pair enjoying oysters, wine, and chocolate cake at a Michelin-starred restaurant. In response, Bloom commented on the post with a series of clapping hands emojis, showing amusement at the unexpected pairing and public reaction. The playful comment came shortly after Perry and Trudeau were seen dining together in Montreal on July 28, 2025. According to reports, they visited several locations, including Mount Royal Park, Le Violon, and Taverne Atlantic Terrace. Their public appearance continued the next day when Trudeau attended Perry's concert with his daughter Ella-Grace, visibly enjoying the show from the front row. While sources claimed the pair are 'just friends,' the sightings sparked widespread speculation online. Perry and Bloom ended their relationship in July 2025 after years of an on-and-off romance that began in 2016. They share a daughter, Daisy, and have publicly committed to co-parenting following their split.

OPEC+ agrees in principle another large oil output hike, sources say

LONDON: OPEC+ agreed in principle to boost oil output by 548,000 barrels per day in September, two OPEC+ sources said on Sunday as the group finishes unwinding its biggest tranche of production cuts amid fears of further supply disruptions from Russia. A decision is expected at a meeting scheduled to begin at 1100 GMT, amid fresh U.S. demands for India to stop buying Russian oil as Washington seeks ways to push Moscow for a peace deal with Ukraine. Fresh EU sanctions have also pushed Indian state refiners to suspend Russian oil purchases. OPEC+, which pumps about half of the world's oil, had been curtailing production for several years to support the market. But it reversed course this year to regain market share, and as U.S. President Donald Trump demanded OPEC pump more oil. OPEC+ began output increases in April with a modest hike of 138,000 bpd, followed by larger hikes of 411,000 bpd in May, June and July and 548,000 bpd in August. If the group agrees to the 548,000-bpd September increase, it will have fully unwound its previous production cut of 2.2 million bpd, while allowing the United Arab Emirates to raise output by 300,000 bpd. Oil falls on worries about OPEC+ supply OPEC+ still has in place a separate, voluntary cut of about 1.65 million bpd from eight members and a 2-million-bpd cut across all members, which expire at the end of 2026. Sources have said previously the group had no plans to discuss other tranches of cuts on Sunday.

China and Russia start joint drills in Sea of Japan

BEIJING: China and Russia began joint naval drills in the Sea of Japan on Sunday as they seek to reinforce their partnership and counterbalance what they see as a US-led global order. Alongside economic and political ties, Moscow and Beijing have strengthened their military cooperation in recent years, and their relations have deepened since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. The 'Joint Sea-2025' exercises kicked off in waters near the Russian port of Vladivostok and would last for three days, China's defence ministry said in a statement on Sunday. The two sides will hold 'submarine rescue, joint anti-submarine, air defence and anti-missile operations, and maritime combat'. Four Chinese vessels, including guided-missile destroyers Shaoxing and Urumqi, are participating in the exercises alongside Russian ships, the ministry said. After the drills, the two countries will conduct naval patrols in 'relevant waters of the Pacific'. China and Russia have carried out annual drills for several years, with the 'Joint Sea' exercises beginning in 2012. Last year's drills were held along China's southern coast. The Chinese defence ministry said Friday that this year's exercises were aimed at 'further deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership' of the two countries. China has never denounced Russia's more than three-year war nor called for it to withdraw its troops, and many of Ukraine's allies, including the United States, believe that Beijing has provided support to Moscow. China insists it is a neutral party, regularly calling for an end to the fighting while also accusing Western countries of prolonging the conflict by arming Ukraine.
