Breakout Stars to Watch For the 2025-26 Season

In preparation for another jam-packed season of football, we highlight a few names that could fully break out into the spotlight. As many teams across the world of football are well into their preseason preparation for the 2025-26 season, it's the most opportune time to provide an update to our list of potential breakout stars who you should be keeping your eye on this season. The proof is in the pudding. Last year, our list consisted of Amad, Morgan Rogers, and Pau Cubarsi, three players who had phenomenal campaigns in 2024-25 and look set to continue their upward trajectory. The parameters of inclusion remain the same — any players who were under the age of 23 at the start of the season are eligible. However, this time we've added a couple of women as well. That's enough for the preamble, we'll kick off this year's list with some of the brightest up-and-coming stars in world football. Poised For a Big Leap Gonzalo García Despite their humbling loss to PSG at the end of the FIFA Club World Cup, there were several positives for Real Madrid to take from the tournament. While Arda Guler's emergence as a certified option in central midfield for Xabi Alonso was a bright spot, it's impossible to look past Gonzalo Garcia. With Kylian Mbappe missing the entirety of the group stage, the 21-year-old was given his opportunity to lead the line, and he grabbed it with both hands. In his six CWC appearances, he bagged four goals and an assist, and showed impressive predatory instincts throughout. He feels like a proper old school No. 9, and his off-ball movement combined with ruthless finishing means he's an immediate challenger to Mbappe for the starting striker role. With Rodrygo's future still up in the air and the seemingly ever-changing dynamic of Real Madrid's front line, we could be in for a proper breakout year from Madrid's new gem. If you'll be betting on La Liga this year, García might be a good place to start. Michelle Agyemang A couple of months ago, very few people knew about Arsenal's teenage striker Michelle Agyemang. Still, a lightning-quick goal less than a minute into her debut for the England senior team meant she put herself in contention for a place at the summer's Women's European Championships. Much like Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo two summers prior, Agyemang massively made her mark and has become a darling of the nation, with her goals being absolutely vital to England's campaign and eventual triumph over Spain in the final. Her performances at the EUROs earned her the Young Player of the Tournament award and instantly made her a household name in women's football. She spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Brighton, gaining valuable first-team experience, but her return to the defending UWCL champions in 2025 could be the catalyst for a signature season from the young Lioness. Lily Yohannes One of the United States women's national team's crown jewels, Lily Yohannes recently confirmed her transfer to OL Lyonnes in the French top flight. Her stellar season for Ajax in 2024-25 was the best campaign she's had so far, where she bagged six goals and three assists in 19 games from central midfield. Her unreal ability on the ball means she is an immense attacking threat and can create both for herself and others almost at will. At just 18 years old, she joins the eight-time European champions and the dominant force in French football, and in a young career that has already seen her become the youngest ever starter in the UEFA Women's Champions League, she is set to shatter more records for club and country going forward. Marc Bernal With the rate at which La Masia churns out new ballers, it feels like we'll have a Barcelona representative on every iteration of this list. Last year, it was Pau Cubarsi who was a fixture at the heart of the Blaugrana defense that went on to secure a domestic treble. This time, it's Marc Bernal who's next up. Bernal burst onto the scene at the beginning of last season, aged only 17, and his first few appearances had Barcelona fans in awe. He showed composure and maturity far beyond his years, and the fact that so many immediately drew comparisons to Barça legend Sergio Busquets should tell you all you need to know about his play style. Football is often a cruel game, and Bernal's potential breakout season was halted by an ACL injury that saw him miss the majority of that campaign. He only recently began training again, but should his fitness hold up, he stands a real chance at breaking into the stacked Barcelona midfield. The Next Generation Gilberto Mora Mexico's Gilberto Mora became the youngest player to ever win a senior international trophy when he started in Mexico's 2-1 Gold Cup victory over the United States this summer. He assisted Raul Jimenez for the winning goal that booked their spot in the final, before an assured performance in the big game helped his nation to another triumph over their old foes. He plays in Liga MX for Xolos de Tijuana, and he made his professional debut when he was still only 15 during the 2024-25 season before becoming the youngest ever goalscorer in the league's history. With confirmed interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs, including Barcelona, we could be seeing Mora make the switch sooner rather than later. Max Dowman His performances for Arsenal in their opening two preseason fixtures have sent fans into delirium, but the hidden gem section is still where Max Downman belongs (for now). At just 15 years old, his inclusion in Mikel Arteta's traveling squad ahead of what is a potential make-or-break season for the Spaniard tells you everything you need to know about this talented teen. He's a dynamic attacking midfielder, and his obscene combination of technical ability and eye for goal at his age is frightening. Many across social media have begun to tout him as England's answer to Lamine Yamal, and while we won't go that far yet, it's an interesting conversation to have. Dowman turns 16 at the end of this calendar year and will subsequently be able to see first-team minutes in the second half of the season. While he will start the season playing U18 football once again, you should definitely keep an eye on Dowman, because, as we saw with Miles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri last season, despite their age, players are sometimes too good to deny.

Knox County School Board will discuss what happens if federal K-12 money gets frozen again

The Trump administration is releasing the $6 billion in education funding it froze June 30, but uncertainty remains for the Knox County Board of Education moving forward. School Board member Katherine Bike is leading an effort to ask the state to make sure that, if federal money gets frozen again, the state can offset the loss for its public schools. What the freeze meant for Knox County Schools: KCS stood to lose $3.8 million for Title II, III and IV grants, Superintendent Jon Rysewyk told Knox News, before the Trump administration released the nearly $6 billion it had frozen nationwide. The county made its budget assuming it would get the money July 1 (the start of the fiscal year). Damage to KCS was still done: After KCS found out June 30 the money was being frozen, it terminated 27.5 positions: 13.5 regional content facilitator positions in academic areas including math, English language arts, science and social studies 11 student support staffers 3 Welcome Center family liaisons What Bike wants the school board to ask the state: The resolution from Bike "respectfully urges the Tennessee General Assembly to take immediate action to ensure that any future loss, reduction or freeze of federal funding - particularly under IDEA and Titles I, II, III and IV - is fully offset by state funding." State lawmakers are talking about federal education dollars: Earlier this year, lawmakers created the Tennessee Joint Federal Education Deregulation Cooperation Task Force to explore how much the state relies on federal dollars for education. For the 2025-26 school year, the state reported to task force members July 29 it expects $106,353,503 in federal funding to be available. "I think it's important that we look at what could happen in Tennessee because the Department of Education from the federal level is somewhat in a state of flux," state Sen. Bill Powers of Clarksville said. Unanswered questions about how the state could step in: When state Sen. Dawn White of Murfreesboro asked budget analyst Alan Hampton if the state could replace lost funds for programs currently funded by the federal government, he didn't know. "I would have to get back to you on that," Hampton said. Attend the meetings: The school board will discuss the resolution at its meeting at 5 p.m. Aug. 4 in the boardroom of Summer Place, 500 W. Summit Hill Drive. The board will have its voting meeting at 5 p.m. Aug. 7 in the boardroom of Summer Place, 500 W. Summit Hill Drive. Closing the loop I wrote about Knox County Commissioners considering an effort to raise the mineral service tax paid by companies that use the county's quarries from 15 cents per ton to 20 cents per ton. The effort passed July 28. The only commissioner to vote against it was Larsen Jay, who represents the whole county. "Minutes before (the vote), we had a report on housing and it outlined how materials costs in housing were continuing to rise and I didn't want to add to more expense to build a home," Jay said in the text. The county expects to make an extra $150,000-$160,000 a year for road work from the mineral service tax increase. 5 things you might have missed Here are some news highlights from last week: Hayden Dunbar highlighted how SNAP federal funding cuts could change free lunch at Knox County Schools I reported that Knox County Commission chair Gina Oster, a Republican, has a challenger from the right Joanna Hayes wrote about the Knoxville bar that was named one of USA TODAY's best of the year Keenan Thomas exclusively reported U.S. Rep. Vinicius Jr warned against 'poisonous fight' with Real Madrid as contract demand could 'backfire' after disappointing season alongside Kylian Mbappe

Bilbao's sporting director warns Vinicius Claims Real Madrid rewards the deserving Laments winger's form in previous campaign Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? Contract talks between Real Madrid and Vinicius have stalled after the Brazilian asked to be the highest-paid player in the squad, which irked the Madrid camp. Bilbao's sporting director and ex-Madrid player Alkorta says the 25-year-old should not test Madrid president Florentino Perez as it may 'backfire', and instead showcase his worthiness to earn rewards. THE BIGGER PICTURE Vinicius had a significant drop in his form in the 2024-25 campaign, scoring a total of 22 goals and registering 19 assists in 58 games, compared to his 2023-24 season, in which he scored 24 and provided 11 assists in 39 games. Yet, when the contract renewal discussions were held, the winger asked for a salary higher than that of Kylian Mbappe. Alkorta claims the player didn't perform well last season and should not demand a pay rise, while also asserting that the battle for money can turn into a 'poisonous fight', citing the example of Sergio Ramos as one for the Brazilian to learn from. WHAT ALKORTA SAID Talking to Cadena SER about Vinicius's drop in form after Mbappe's signing, Alkorta said: "He's one of the best in the world, without a doubt. Trying to put pressure on Florentino Perez could backfire. Let's remember what happened with [Sergio] Ramos. Since they moved him to the left wing, I haven't seen him doing well. Playing with Mbappe has been difficult for him. They're young and ambitious, but the environment needs to advise them better. Now is not the time to demand things as if they had had a great season. Last year, changing the system to play him and Mbappe didn't work out entirely. If he focuses on performing at his best, the rest will follow. Real Madrid always reward those who prove their worth on the pitch." Further explaining how a fight over salary can turn ugly, Alkorta said: "These fights are poisonous. Florentino is affectionate, but he doesn't hesitate to make tough decisions. He needs to be cool. If he has a good season, he'll have the strength to negotiate." WHAT NEXT FOR VINICIUS? Vinicius has attracted significant interest from Saudi Arabia. Reportedly, Al-Ahli have set aside a transfer budget of €300 million (£261m/$351m) for the winger. However, the club are aware that the Brazilian might not switch clubs as of now and are waiting for the right time to make a move. For now, Vinicius has publicly stated he wants to continue with Madrid. The Spanish side are set to face Osasuna in their opening La Liga fixture on August 19.
