New football stands proposed for community club

New fan stands could be erected at a Conwy county leisure centre for a community football club. Mrs Lynda Griffiths has applied to Conwy County Council's planning department, seeking permission to erect two 40-foot converted shipping containers as football spectator stands at Y Morfa Leisure Centre, Morfa Avenue, in Kinmel Bay.
If granted permission, the new stands would seat 50 people, with wheelchair and disabled access. The refurbished shipping containers will be made from Corten Steel and are described as high durability, with corrosion resistance.
The new stands will be 'finished in Kinmel Bay Football colours of two shades of blue'. Natural Resources Wales have written to the council raising no objection, but they did issue advice relating to flooding. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox.
'Given the nature and scale of the proposals, on this occasion we would expect the developer to take the opportunity to incorporate flood resilient design where/if feasible and include some form of flood action plan acknowledging the tidal flood risk,' the letter advised.
The leisure centre currently includes the main building, showers, toilets, kitchen, spa, squash courts, offices, an all-weather MUGA, a main football pitch, and a large grassed area suitable for additional football competitions and tournaments as well as cricket and sports days.
Neighbours are yet to be consulted. The plans will likely be debated at a future planning committee at Conwy's Coed Pella HQ.

Airbus secures 90 plane order worth billions of pounds

Airbus has secured a new major plane order. Avolon, a leading global aviation finance company, has placed an order for 90 Airbus aircraft. This is made up of 15 A330neo and 75 A321neo in a deal with more than £10bn at list prices. This brings Avolon's total Airbus orders to 79 A330neos and 264 A321neos. Wings for the planes will be assembled at Airbus Broughton in North Wales. Andy Cronin, Avolon CEO, said: 'This order demonstrates our strong confidence in the long-term demand for new aircraft. Our scale and balance sheet position us to support our airline customers' expansion and replacement needs into the next decade. "Both the A321neo and A330neo are in high demand, and we expect this to continue given the long-term growth trajectory for the aviation sector. We are delighted to be expanding and extending our long-term partnership with Airbus with this order.' Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business, said: 'Lessors are excellent barometers of the aircraft market, and we are grateful to Avolon for expanding its commitment for the A320 Family and A330neo, so soon after an earlier order two years ago. "This endorsement illustrates the strong attractiveness to a wide variety of customers of these two aircraft, the most efficient in their category with the latest technologies embedded, covering the market space from domestic to regional to long haul routes. We value this partnership which has helped open new markets and broaden the customer base for both aircraft types." Powered by the latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the A330-900 has a range of 7,200nm / 13,300 km non-stop and reduces fuel burn, CO2 emissions and operating cost by 25% compared to the previous generation aircraft. The A321neo is the largest member of Airbus' best-selling A320neo Family and brings a 50% noise reduction and more than 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft. As with all in-production aircraft, the A330neo and A321neo are able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with a target to increase to up to 100% SAF capability by 2030.

North Wales shopping park secures major new retail lettings at empty units

A retail park has secured lettings for two large empty units. Island Green Shopping Centre in Wrexham had lost a number of brands in recent years, with occupancy falling to near 70%. But Focus Estate Fund has now bagged lettings at the former Wilko and Asda Living stores. The units have been taken by Trade Outlet, a growing discount retail chain offering a mix of household goods, electricals, homewares, and general merchandise. The brand will occupy over 45,000 sq ft combined, breathing new life into long-vacant anchor space and "broadening the value offer at the centre". Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox Maxim Skolnick, general partner at Focus Estate Fund, said: 'At Focus Estate Fund, we specialize in turning around retail assets by identifying value-added potential and unlocking it through active management and strategic repositioning. Island Green is a clear example of this strategy in action. "When we took over the scheme, it was facing significant challenges — several major voids, declining footfall, and underutilized potential. Today, all key units are re-let, the tenant mix is stronger, and early indicators show the centre is regaining its traction. "This turnaround wouldn't have been possible without the excellent work of the teams at Estama and Barker Proudlove, and our in-house asset management team. There's still more to come — we're continuing to build on this momentum to deliver the strategy at its full potential.' Alex Butler, managing director at Estama of Island Green, added: 'These lettings are a big win for the scheme and the town. We're expecting a solid uplift in footfall as the new stores open, and the leasing momentum puts us in a strong position to complete the final phase of the asset plan.' Occupancy at Island Green has increased from 71.4% to 98.7% since Focus Estate Fund took ownership of the scheme. The centre is seeing increased activity; according to data from Euro Car Parks, the number of cars at the shopping centre rose by 23.8% compared to the same period last year. A spokesperson added "With the final major voids now let, this upward trend is expected to continue into the second half of 2025 as the new stores open. Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water ordered to make 'urgent' changes

The call comes from Natural Resources Wales (NRW), which reported 155 pollution incidents linked to the company in 2024. Of these, 132 were from sewerage assets and 23 related to water supply. Nadia De Longhi, head of regulation and permitting at NRW, said: "We've seen a huge deterioration in the performance of Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water since 2020, and despite repeated warnings and interventions they've been unable to reverse this concerning trend. "This has left us with no choice but to pursue a number of prosecutions against the company which have recently concluded." Sewage-related incidents have risen steadily, up from 89 in 2022 and 107 in 2023, marking a 42 per cent increase over the past decade. Of the total, six were classified as serious, though this was down from seven last year. NRW says most incidents originated from foul sewers (423), storm overflows (168), and water treatment works (166) over the past 10 years. The regulator has taken several actions, including securing prosecutions related to pollution on the Gwent Levels and a tributary of the Afon Llwyd. NRW has also pushed for record environmental investment between 2025 and 2030 through the Ofwat price review and issued new guidance on when storm overflows are breaching environmental permits. In 2025, NRW will introduce a team to increase monitoring of water company discharges and begin implementing Pollution Incident Reduction Plans under new legislation. The regulator will also tighten annual performance assessment criteria, in collaboration with the Environment Agency, starting January 1, 2026. Ms De Longhi said: "This is not the outcome we want, nor the best outcome for the environment – our priority will always be to bring companies into compliance and prevent environmental damage from happening in the first place. "We continue to do everything we can to drive improvements, but Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water must address the root cause of these pollution incidents and take preventative measures before more harm is done to the water environment." Hafren Dyfrdwy, which provides drinking water and wastewater services to some of the mid and north Wales border counties, was responsible for five pollution incidents – two of which were from sewerage assets. This also represents an increase from one sewage pollution incident in 2023 and four in total. Neither company met NRW's 80 per cent target for self-reporting incidents, though Dŵr Cymru improved from 70 per cent in 2023 to 74 per cent in 2024.
