Insider: Vikings offensive assistant coach is nearing an extension
The Vikings' ownership and front office have shown an affinity for continuity in recent years under the leadership of the Wilf Family.
When some NFL teams have shown they cannot get out of their own way, the Vikings have emerged as one of the more stable franchises in the league. They show that by keeping their leadership in place with extensions for head coach Kevin O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. From there, we can also look at promotions for various members within the front office who have helped build this talented roster.
Now, eyes are turning towards the coaching staff.
Ben Goessling of The Star Tribune spoke on his show Access Vikings and shared some details about a possible extension for offensive coordinator Wes Phillips. He added, 'It sounds like we may hear something in the not-too-distant future on the Wes Phillips front.'
Wes Phillips is often forgotten about on the Vikings coaching staff and his coaching of the offense.
Most the spotlight goes to Kevin O'Connell due to his background and playing career being a reason to give him his flowers. Last year when Sam Darnold had his breakout year, Phillips played a big role in that and it is likely why an extension is now being discussed.
It is well earned and will help keep O'Connell's staff around for years to come.

Kevin O'Connell and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah send firm message about popular Vikings defender wanting new contract
Kevin O'Connell and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah send firm message about popular Vikings defender wanting new contract originally appeared on A to Z Sports. The Minnesota Vikings enter training camp without a lot of issues in regards to contracts. They have already given out extensions to tight end Josh Oliver and edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel this offseason, but the one pending free agent who hasn't gotten an extension is safety Josh Metellus. Going into the 2023 season, the Vikings gave Metellus a two-year deal worth $8 million ahead of him being a starter for the first time. It paid off in droves, as Metellus has played nearly 2,000 snaps across the last two years and is one of the most important Vikings players. View the to see embedded media. Vikings in contract extension talks with Josh Metellus Despite going into the season without an extension, Metellus has reported to training camp. "I know Josh has been very much looking forward to training camp, getting going," said O'Connell. "He's one of our captains, one of our leaders, and even throughout the spring, was integral and kind of how Flo (Brian Flores), and the defensive group, are looking at 2025." Getting an extension done seems to be a priority for the Vikings, and it probably should be. He's been a massive asset to Brian Flores' defense. Adofo-Mensah mentioned that they have had "great dialogue" with his agent. "We have great dialogue with his agent. We'll continue to have that. We'll see. We'll navigate from there," said Adofo-Mensah The difficult part about a Metellus extension is figuring out how to quantify it. Versatility is a fantastic asset to have when it comes to the on-field play, but putting a dollar amount on what it's worth is difficult. With Metellus, do you pay him like a true safety? Nickel cornerback? Off ball linebacker? He does all three jobs regularly and does them well. When you sit down on either side of the table, that can be a major sticking point, and a likely reason why a deal hasn't been agreed upon as of yet. This situation will be worth monitoring moving forward, as Metellus did "hold in" during mandatory minicamp. View the to see embedded media. Minnesota Vikings training camp Day 1 medical updates: OL remains the focus
The Vikings roster has reported to Eden Prairie, and as a result, they have started their journey into the 2025 season. It starts at home in Minnesota, but they hope it ends on the road in Santa Clara, where they have a chance to raise the Lombardi Trophy for the first time. The worst part of football, especially during training camp, is waiting for injury updates as they occur or as players attempt to return from injuries sustained the previous season. In the case of the Vikings, they had to battle the injury bug more than they did any divisional opponent. It will make monitoring injuries throughout camp a big part of our coverage here on Vikings Wire over the next couple of weeks. After day one, the stars on offense who are fighting their way back dominated the news cycle, though Kevin O'Connell and the players offered updates on most who were dealing with injuries.
