Police kill two robbery gang leaders in Cheras shootout
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) acting director Datuk Fadil Marsus said intelligence indicated the suspects were scouting a new target when police confronted them at 3.45 am.
'They were travelling in a white Honda Civic, believed reported stolen in Subang Jaya in 2023. As police attempted to intercept them, a shootout ensued, resulting in both suspects being killed at the scene,' he told reporters at the location.
Fadil said police recovered housebreaking tools, drugs, a revolver, and a semi-automatic pistol from the vehicle.
Investigations revealed the suspects were involved in 50 cases of housebreaking, armed robbery, and drug-related activities since 2022, causing losses exceeding RM3 million.
The gang, with around 15 members, operated in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, and Perak. Police are tracking the remaining susp

JOHOR BARU: A Vietnamese woman has been arrested for storing and distributing drugs worth over RM4.9mil across two apartment units, according to Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar. The 31-year-old suspect had repackaged the drugs in a mixture of coffee and flavoured powdered beverages for sale. "The activities were uncovered during a raid at a gated and guarded apartment unit in Johor Baru at around 2.15pm on July 25," said Comm Kumar. The suspect then led police to another apartment unit in the same building. The first unit was her living space and drug storage, while the second was used for drug repackaging activities. "We believe she is part of a syndicate active since April," he disclosed at a press conference on Sunday (Aug 3). During the arrest, police seized 29.2kg of ecstasy powder, 131g of ecstasy pills, 20g of ketamine, equipment, jewellery, as well as RM3,000 and S$193 (RM638). Comm Kumar added that police are searching for a 35-year-old man, Terrence Ki Kek Ding, to assist in the investigation.

Johor police seize RM4.9m drugs in raid, arrest Vietnamese woman
JOHOR BAHRU: Johor police have dismantled a drug syndicate that concealed narcotics in beverage packets, including coffee and juice, following two raids in the city late last month. The operation led to the arrest of a 31-year-old Vietnamese woman and the seizure of drugs valued at over RM4.9 million. Johor police chief Datuk M Kumar stated that the raids, conducted between July 25 and July 26, uncovered 29,219 grammes of ecstasy powder, 131 ecstasy pills, and 20 grammes of ketamine. 'The seized drugs could have supplied an estimated 97,849 addicts if distributed,' he said during a press conference. The suspect tested positive for ketamine, and further investigations led to a second raid at another apartment used for drug repackaging. Police also confiscated drug processing tools, RM3,000 in cash, SGD193 (approximately RM617.60), and jewellery worth over RM34,000, bringing the total seizure value to RM4,939,778.60. Kumar explained that the syndicate mixed drugs with coffee powder and flavourings before sealing them in commercial-style drink sachets to evade detection. Each sachet was sold for around RM250, with distribution facilitated through online platforms and local networks. Authorities are searching for a 35-year-old Sarawakian man, Terrence Ki Kek Ding, to assist in investigations. The case is being probed under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 6(3) of the Immigration Act. The Vietnamese suspect has been remanded until August 8. – Bernama

Ex-MMM executive loses bid to review insider trading conviction
PUTRAJAYA: Former Malaysian Merchant Marine Bhd (MMM) executive deputy chairman Datuk Ramesh Rajaratnam has failed in his attempt to review a Court of Appeal decision reinstating his insider trading conviction. A three-judge panel dismissed his application, clearing the way for his appeal to proceed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Aug 20. Ramesh, 61, was convicted in 2019 for trading 5 million MMM shares in 2010 while possessing inside information about a credit rating downgrade. The Sessions Court sentenced him to five years in jail and a RM3 million fine, with an additional three years if unpaid. Justice Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali stated Ramesh did not meet the threshold for a review, noting no breach of natural justice in the earlier ruling. 'The applicant was not without an alternative remedy,' he said, adding Ramesh could still challenge the conviction in the High Court. Initially, Ramesh was acquitted by the High Court in 2021, which found the Sessions Court's judgment merely echoed prosecution arguments. However, the Securities Commission (SC) appealed, leading the Court of Appeal in May 2024 to order a fresh High Court hearing. The SC had withdrawn appeals on two related charges involving 5.2 million shares traded in February 2010, linked to MMM's PN17 status.
