Urgent travel warning issued to Aussies: What you need to know before you book flights to Cambodia and Thailand
Weeks of tension over a border dispute between the south-east Asian neighbours escalated into deadly clashes that killed at least 12 people on Thursday.
It comes after Thailand recalled its ambassador to Cambodia and planned to expel Cambodia's envoy in Bangkok, after a second Thai soldier in the space of a week lost a limb to a landmine.
Aussie tourists heading to provinces near the 800km-long border have been warned to reconsider their travel.
The Department of Foreign Affairs' Smartraveller website was updated on Thursday night to reflect the concerning developments.
Impacted Cambodian provinces include Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey, where there are a number of famous temples popular with foreign tourists.
'We now advise to reconsider your need to travel to the border areas of the northern and north-western provinces,' Smartraveller states.
'Armed conflict between Thai and Cambodian military forces along the Thai-Cambodian border has increased.
'This includes reports of military strikes, violence, and the use of landmines in the border areas.'
Tourists are urged to follow the advice of authorities, monitor local media for updates, and pay close attention to their personal security.
Land border crossing points along the Thai-Cambodian border remain closed.
Aussies should exercise normal safety precautions in other parts of Cambodia.
Aussies travelling to the Thai provinces of Buriram, Si Saket, Surin and Ubon Ratchathani should also reconsider plans.
'We've reviewed our advice for Thailand and continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution overall,' Smartraveller added.
'Border crossing points along the Thai-Cambodian border continue to be closed at short notice.'

Friends outraged after Airbnb host cancels booking because of where they're from
Airbnb said they suspended the host and are now investigating the matter after pals Jemma Louise Gough, 38, and Jamie Lee Watkins, 37, were denied a stay in Manchester Two pals who booked a trip to Manchester for a concert were left "gobsmacked" after being denied an Airbnb stay simply because they were "from Wales". Jemma Louise Gough, 38, and Jamie Lee Watkins, 37, had been planning to travel from Cwmbran, South Wales, to see Australian music DJ Sonny Fodera perform at Co-op Live in November. But when they tried to book the one-night stay at a private property in the city, their reservation was abruptly declined. The pair, who wrote on the listing that they were coming 'from Wales to see the gig', were left baffled and politely messaged the host to ask why. The response came back bluntly: "Because you're from WALES." Jemma, a school support officer and mum-of-two, said the message left her stunned. "My mouth hit the floor – nothing else other than 'because you're from Wales'. It was nothing about us going to the concert or whatever, it was just discrimination of the country. We're amazing people, the Welsh are lush. I don't know what me and my friend - or the whole of Wales - did that's so horrible. It's absolutely horrendous." It comes after another Brit abroad slammed an all-inclusive hotel food, asking 'what on earth is this?' Jamie asked the host for further explanation as to why they'd had their booking rejected, saying it was 'discrimination under the Equality Act 2010'. This wasn't the case for two gobsmacked music fans, who had their innocent request to stay in Manchester rejected because they were Welsh. Jemma Louise Gough, 38, and friend Jamie Lee Watkins, 37, had requested an Airbnb room in the city so they could see Australian DJ Sonny Fodera at the Co-op Live Arena. The pair, from Cwmbran in South Wales, were trying to book a double room for just one night in November. They told the Airbnb host they were coming 'from Wales to see the gig' when everything went awry. Jemma and Jamie then received an email telling them their booking request had been rejected. When they asked why, the prospective host replied: 'Because you're from WALES.' Mum-of-two Jemma said: 'We had an email that our booking had been declined and we were getting a refund. 'We wrote 'Hi, can I ask why it's been declined?', with a kiss, very politely.'
