Former MLB White Sox pitcher Jenks dies aged 44
"We have lost an iconic member of the White Sox family today," said White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf.
"He and his family knew cancer would be his toughest battle and he will be missed as a husband, father, friend and teammate. He will forever hold a special place in all our hearts."
Jenks made saves in games one and four of the 2005 World Series, in which the White Sox swept Houston in four games. The rookie also pitched scoreless 11th and 12th innings in a 14-inning Chicago win in game three.
He threw the final pitch of the World Series in game four as the White Sox ended an 88-year title drought.
"None of us will ever forget that ninth inning of game four in Houston, all that Bobby did for the 2005 World Series champions and for the entire Sox organization during his time in Chicago," Reinsdorf said.
Jenks, an American League All-Star selection in 2006 and 2007, pitched for the White Sox for six MLB seasons from 2005-10, going 14-18 with a 3.40 earned-run average, 173 saves and 334 strikeouts over 329 relief appearances.
In 2006 and 2007, Jenks recorded back-to-back 40-save seasons, which made him the second-youngest to achieve the feat at the time. Jenks retired 41 batters in a row in 2007 to match what was then an MLB record.
Jenks finished his career in 2011 with the Boston Red Sox, playing only 19 games due to bone spurs on his spine that hampered nearby nerves and tendons.

Knicks hire two-time NBA Coach of the Year Brown to guide club
The 55-year-old American went 454-304 as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento. The Kings fired him last December after a 13-18 start. "After a thorough and extensive search process, we are pleased to announce Mike Brown as the head coach of the New York Knicks," Knicks president Leon Rose said. That was enough to prompt the Knicks to fire Tom Thibodeau last month after five years as head coach. Brown went 107-88 as coach of the Kings for three seasons. In the 2022-23 campaign, his first at Sacramento, Brown's team won 48 games and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2006 as he took the NBA Coach of the Year award, the first to do so by a unanimous vote. After assistant stops at Washington, San Antonio and Indiana -- including a staff role on the 2003 San Antonio NBA title run -- Brown was named coach of the Cavaliers in 2005 and with rising superstar LeBron James. Brown oversaw the Cavs reaching the playoffs for the first time since 1998 and into the 2007 NBA Finals. He was named NBA Coach of the Year for the first time in 2010 after guiding Cleveland to a league-high 66 triumphs. He was fired in May 2010 as the Cavs were set to welcome James back from his stint in Miami. Brown replaced Phil Jackson as coach of the Lakers one year later, only to be fired in November 2012. Brown was rehired by the Cavs in 2013 but fired again after they went 33-49 and missed the playoffs. From 2016-2022, Brown was an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors, who captured three NBA titles during his stay there. In the 2017 playoffs, Brown went 12-0 while coach Steve Kerr was absent during the Warriors' championship run. Brown left for the Kings in 2022.

MLB Nationals name Cairo interim manager after shake-up
The 51-year-old Venezuelan, who played for nine different MLB teams in a 17-year career that ended in 2012, replaced Dave Martinez, who was fired by the struggling club on Sunday in a shake-up that also included the ouster of general manager Mike Rizzo. "Miguel is well-respected in our organization and around baseball," interim general manager Mike DeBartolo said in a statement. "A diligent worker and student of the game, he has a proven track record of showing strong leadership in a variety of situations and I believe that his voice and energy will serve as a catalyst to our team and our fan base in the second half of the season." The Nationals are 37-53 and last in the National League East division. They are on pace for a sixth straight losing season since winning the 2019 World Series under Martinez. DeBartolo took over on Sunday for Rizzo, who had been making personnel decisions for the Nats sine 2009. Cairo has MLB managerial experience. In 2022, he was a bench coach for the Chicago White Sox and served as acting manager when Tony La Russa stepped away with health issues. Cairo guided the White Sox to an 18-16 record over the final games of the campaign. The Nationals take the field under Cairo for the first time on Tuesday at St. Louis.
