Crystal Palace dropped to UEFA's Conference League in multi-club ownership case

CNAa day ago
Premier League side Crystal Palace have been dropped in European competition to the third-tier Conference League in a multi-club ownership case, while Olympique Lyonnais will be allowed to play in the Europa League, UEFA said on Friday.
The Eagle Football Group are majority owners of Lyon while its chairman John Textor also owns a controlling stake in Palace.
Palace had qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup last season, while Lyon reached the competition by finishing sixth in Ligue 1.
A move to relegate them to France's domestic second-tier Ligue 2 over their poor finances was overturned on Wednesday, a decision UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) had been waiting for before ruling on the multi-club ownership case.
"Consequently, the CFCB First Chamber pursued the assessment of the documentation submitted by Olympique Lyonnais and Crystal Palace and concluded that the clubs breached, as at 1 March 2025, the multi-club ownership criteria," UEFA said in a statement.

Blackstenius hits top form as Sweden win Women's Euro group

Sweden's Stina Blackstenius has timed the peak of her goal-scoring form perfectly, netting the winner for her club Arsenal in the recent Champions League final and then scoring against Poland and Germany as her side blazed their way into the quarter-finals at the Women's Euros as Group C winners. The Swedes beat Germany 4-1 to rack up a perfect nine points from their three games, and they will face the runner-up in Group D, which features England, France, Netherlands and Wales, while the Germans will meet the winners of that group. "I'm very happy that I've gained the confidence to play and I am happy with the goal that we got here today, but mainly because of the win today and that we are still in the tournament," a beaming Blackstenius told reporters. Despite playing her club football in England, Blackstenius said she had not thought about who Sweden might meet in the quarter-finals. "I don't want to stand here and say that I prefer any of the teams - it's an incredibly good team, no matter who we face, so it will be very exciting to see how it ends (in Group D) tomorrow, and then we will continue to prepare ourselves, regardless of which team we play against," she said. The two teams also enjoyed enormous support, with a yellow wall of Swedish fans behind one of the goals that sang and drummed from beginning to end, building a big-game atmosphere. "I enjoy being at championships. It's something extra to experience. There's something with these games that makes it extra special," Blackstenius said. "When I look up at our fans today, I think they're very visible, and it also gives a feeling that we're doing this together. There's a lot that drives me in the whole set-up, with all the support and knowing that there are family and friends here."

Poland end Euro 2025 on high note with historic Padilla-Bidas goal, win over Denmark

LUCERNE, Switzerland :Poland's Natalia Padilla-Bidas scored her country's first goal at a major women's tournament in a 3-2 victory over Denmark on Saturday that sends Poland home from their European championship debut on a high note. Both teams had already been eliminated from quarter-final contention so Saturday's match was about final group placings with Poland finishing third and Denmark fourth. Bayern Munich's Padilla-Bidas brought the Polish fans to their feet at Allmend Stadion with her historic strike in the 12th minute when a loose ball fell at her feet and she fired home. Ewa Pajor, Poland's all-time leading goalscorer, doubled their lead eight minutes later when she intercepted the ball in the midfield, laid it out to Padilla-Bidas then charged to the back post to head it in. Janni Thomsen pulled one back in the 59th minute but Poland restored their two-goal lead when substitute Martyna Wiankowska struck from the edge of the box, firing the ball in off the bar.

We won't fear group leaders Spain, says Italy defender Elisabetta Oliviero

The Italians looked set to join Spain in the last eight, but they conceded a late equaliser in their previous game which gave Portugal a 1-1 draw and leaves Italy with some work to do. They will be sure of reaching the quarter-finals if they avoid defeat by Spain, or if Portugal do not beat Belgium. 'It's not a joke – I'm telling you, we don't have any (fear) because it's not a matter of fear,' Oliviero said. 'Tomorrow we play our game with a lot of respect, but I repeat, we will play for (against) Spain like any other nation we will meet, or any other situation. 'Spain has weak points like everyone, and we will definitely study them. Football is a special sport, and that's the beauty of it. We will see many things on the pitch.' Spain's embarrassment of attacking riches has seen them score a staggering 11 goals in two games so far, thrashing Portugal 5-0 in their opener, and following that with a 6-2 drubbing of Belgium, to book their place in the last eight. 'When they score those goals in matches, I'm not surprised because they do exactly the same thing in training,' Spain's Adriana Nanclares told reporters on July 9. 'I enjoyed it a lot. The goals say it all,' James said to the BBC. 'We bounced back from our previous game (2-1 loss to France) and today we showed we're more than capable of showing the world what we can do. 'I just try to do my best each game.' REUTERS, AFP
