The Silver – Copper Connection and the Key Anniversary

The Silver – Copper Connection and the Key Anniversary

Globe and Mail4 days ago
In today's analysis I'd like to focus on silver and its rally.
In short, it seems that two factors are in play at this time. The first one is fundamental.
The announcement of 50% copper tariffs has created significant market volatility, but the broader implications for silver supply deserve closer examination. Approximately 70-80% of global silver production comes as a byproduct of mining other metals, with copper operations representing a significant portion of this supply (about 20%-25% of silver supply comes from copper mining).
This creates a complex dynamic for silver markets. While tariffs may initially appear supportive for domestic mining, the economic reality is more nuanced. Tariffs function as a tax on domestic consumers and importers, not a direct profit enhancement for mining companies, so it's not an encouragement to increase production.
When copper becomes 50% more expensive for U.S. industrial users, demand typically contracts across copper-intensive sectors including construction, electronics, and automotive manufacturing.
This actually means lower demand for copper, ultimately leading to lower copper production.
This implies also lower silver supply coming from copper mining. Naturally, this is a long-term bullish factor for silver.
Is the market discounting this factor right now and silver is rallying based on that? Will silver's purchasing power increase further?
This could be the case, but I doubt that. The timing is suspiciously aligned with 2008 top – just as is platinum's June surge and copper's spike-high top.
The difference between now and 2008 is that back then stocks were already declining – and miners were quite strong. Right now, miners are already weak:
We saw just a small breather in the last two days.
The recent good performance of the stock market makes industrial metals' good performance more realistic (even though its temporary). This means that silver had a good reason to move higher – more than during its mid-July 2008 top. This doesn't change that the rally itself is likely just temporary.
Technically, and taken at face value, silver's picture looks bullish. It verified its breakout above the previous highs and it's rallying today.
If he bullish scenario really plays out, silver could rally to $44.2 or even to $50 before declining again.
Why is this a big IF?
Because silver is known for fake breakouts, because gold is not breaking higher, because the timing is perfectly aligned with 2008 top, and because the USD Index pretty much confirmed its breakout.
Today's close – if it happens above the declining resistance line – will finally confirm the breakout.
But looking at what's going on in the world right now vs. what is happening in the USD Index makes it clear that the USD Index is about to rally.
I mean the increases in tariffs and the tariff-based uncertainty. Various developments about tariffs keep popping up, and yet the USD Index stands firm.
All in all, the current set-up suggests that silver is getting positioned to rally in the future much better than it was previously the case, but as far as the current rally is concerned, it seems that the rally might be reversed soon. It's Friday, but we might have a ' Silver Thursday ' any day now.

U.S. authors suing Anthropic can band together in copyright class action, judge rules

A California federal judge ruled on Thursday that three authors suing artificial intelligence startup Anthropic for copyright infringement can represent writers nationwide whose books Anthropic allegedly pirated to train its AI system. U.S. District Judge William Alsup said the authors can bring a class action on behalf of all U.S. writers whose works Anthropic allegedly downloaded from 'pirate libraries' LibGen and PiLiMi to create a repository of millions of books in 2021 and 2022. Alsup said Anthropic may have illegally downloaded as many as 7 million books from the pirate websites, which could make it liable for billions of dollars in damages if the authors' case is successful. Spokespeople for Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the decision. An attorney for the authors declined to comment. Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber and Kirk Wallace Johnson sued Anthropic last year, arguing that the Amazon and Alphabet-backed startup used their books without permission or compensation to teach its chatbot Claude to respond to human prompts. The case is one of several high-stakes lawsuits brought by authors, news outlets and other copyright owners against companies including OpenAI, Microsoft and Meta Platforms over their AI training. AI companies argue their systems make fair use of copyrighted material to create new, transformative content. Alsup determined in June that Anthropic's AI training made fair use of authors' works, but said the company still violated their rights by saving pirated copies of their books to a 'central library of all the books in the world' that would not necessarily be used for AI training. Alsup said on Thursday the three authors could represent all writers whose books Anthropic allegedly downloaded from LibGen and PiLiMi, rejecting Anthropic's argument that identifying all of the copyright-eligible works and their authors would be impractical. --- Reporting by Blake Brittain in Washington; Editing by David Bario and Rod Nickel

Stock Market News for Jul 17, 2025

Wall Street made a chaotic start on Wednesday, with stocks going on a wild ride after reports suggested that President Donald Trump was set to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, but finally ended in the green after Trump denied the reports. All three major indexes ended in positive territory. How Did The Benchmarks Perform? The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) rose 0.5% or 231.49 points, to end at 44,254.78 points. The S&P 500 gained 0.3%, or 19.94 points, to finish at 6,263.70 points. Real estate and healthcare stocks were the biggest gainers. The Real Estate Select Sector SPDR (XLRE) gained 1.1%, while the Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 1.2%. The Technology Select Sector SPDR (XLK) added 0.3%. Ten of the 11 sectors of the benchmark index ended in positive territory. The tech-heavy Nasdaq jumped 0.3%, or 52.69 points, to close at 20,730.49 points, posting a new all-time closing high. The fear-gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) was up 1.27% to 17.16. Reports of Powell Firing Rattle Stocks Before Rebound Wall Street saw a volatile first hour of trading on Wednesday after a White House spokesperson and news reports indicated that Trump was gearing up to fire Powell. However, Trump later denied the reports, saying that it is 'highly unlikely' that he will fire Powell anytime soon. 'No, we're not planning on doing it,' Trump said. However, he added that he does not 'rule out anything. Powell's term is set to end next May but Trump has been extremely critical of the Federal Reserve Chairman. The President has been calling for Powell's resignation for delaying interest rate cuts, which he claims is costing the economy billions of dollars. Powell and most of the Federal Reserve officials have maintained a hawkish stance and said that they are in no rush to cut interest rates, as they would wait and watch how Trump's tariffs would impact the economy, as higher tariffs are likely to push inflation up. Investors Monitor Fresh Inflation Data Although Trump denied plans to fire Powell, investors remained concerned about the state of the economy. Fresh data released on Tuesday showed that the consumer price index (CPI) rose in June from May levels, which was primarily due to the new tariffs. On Wednesday, a separate report showed that the producer price index (PPI), the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, remained unchanged in June. This was because the lower service prices balanced the tariff-driven goods costs. Earnings Season Gathering Pace The earnings season kicked off this week. On Wednesday, a fresh batch of banks reported their quarterly results. Shares of Bank of America Corporation ( BAC ) declined 0.3% despite beating on earnings. Bank of America Corporation reported second-quarter 2025 earnings of $0.89 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.86 per share. Bank of America has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here. Shares of Morgan Stanley ( MS ) also ended 1.3% lower despite the company reporting higher profits. Morgan Stanley reported second-quarter 2025 earnings of $2.13 per share, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.93 per share. Economic Data In other economic data released on Wednesday, industrial production rose 0.3% sequentially in June, surpassing analysts' expectations of a rise of 0.1%. Capacity utilization rose to 77.6% in June from 77.5% in May, surpassing analysts' expectations of 77.4%.
