Walmart CFO talks private brand, delivery growth

Miami Herald23-06-2025
As Walmart looks to broaden its grocery assortment, private brands are playing a major role, the company's CFO said at a recent conference.
In particular, the company is seeing success with its Bettergoods grocery line, which launched last year and focuses on trendy and affordable items.
"Bettergoods has been a big success story for us," John David Rainey, executive vice president and CFO of Walmart, said at the Oppenheimer Consumer Growth & E-Commerce Conference early this month, according to a Seeking Alpha transcript.
The brand features approximately 400 items and has racked up almost $500 million in sales, Rainey said, noting that roughly 70% of that brand's items are priced below $5.
"What's exciting to me about this is 40% of the customers that buy a Bettergood[s] item are coming back as repeat customers. … I think it really speaks to the quality of the overall assortment," Rainey said.
Along with improving its stance on fresh foods, Walmart is also focused on convenience for its customers, he added.
Pharmacy delivery, which is available at the majority of the retailer's stores, is promoting "sticky behavior" among customers, Rainey said. Last fall, Walmart launched same-day pharmacy delivery nationwide.
"[With] pharmacy delivery, we can easily provide the opportunity for customers to add in additional food items or add in general merchandise or maybe there's other items within the pharmacy that they want to have delivered … and there's no company that can do all three of those: [general merchandise], food and pharmacy," he said.
E-commerce, especially delivery, is another key growth driver for the company. Reliable and fast delivery is the "single most compelling part of the value proposition" for its Walmart+ membership program, Rainey said.
Walmart is encouraged by consumers' willingness to pay for speedier delivery.
Walmart has almost doubled the number of deliveries done in under three hours from the first quarter of last year, Rainey said. In recent weeks, express delivery has accounted for as much as 40% of delivery orders, he said, noting that this quick delivery option accounted for one-third of delivery orders in the company's most recent quarter.
"We continue to see that customers are willing to actually pay for that expedited delivery," he said.

'Wealth Does Not Stop. Rich Stops.' -- Grant Cardone Explains How To Build Multi-Generational Wealth

A high salary does not guarantee that you will build multi-generational wealth for your children. What you do with your money can build wealth, and that's a key lesson Grant Cardone shared in a recent video. "Wealth does not stop. Rich stops," Cardone explained. Here's how you can use this insight to approach your finances differently and set the stage for multi-generational wealth. Don't Miss: 7,000+ investors have joined Timeplast's mission to eliminate microplastics—now it's your turn to $100k+ in investable assets? – no cost, no obligation. Your Wealth Can Outlive You Cardone started the clip by mentioning that Walmart (NYSE:WMT) founder Sam Walton still has five children who are on the billionaires list. His children are still on that list because Walton built the largest global retailer. Walmart continues to generate positive cash flow for its heirs. While Walton doesn't earn any additional income, his assets have outlived him. Those assets continue to provide wealth for his children. You can start a business and then hand it off to your children in the future. That's building wealth. You can also make a six-figure salary, but that salary vanishes the moment you pass away or can no longer fulfill the job's responsibilities due to age or another factor. It's also possible to get laid off from your job, while you have more control over your financial destiny if you start a business. Trending: This AI-Powered Trading Platform Has 5,000+ Users, 27 Pending Patents, and a $43.97M Valuation — Your Wealth Gets Split Up After Death Cardone also mentioned that your wealth will get taxed and split up after you pass away. If you built your fortune on a rich salary with no assets, your children may not see a lot of it. Estate taxes and local taxes can also come into play, further reducing the inheritance you provide for your children. That's why starting a business is valuable. The cash flow continues to arrive, and your heirs can improve the business to boost its profits. If you don't start a business, you can also invest in assets like stock and real estate that generate income. It's better to be reminded of how your money will be taxed and split up when you pass your inheritance on to your heirs. It can give you the extra motivation to invest in passive assets and start a company that your children can A Brand Cardone wraps up the video clip by explaining that he's building a brand. He believes people will continue to talk about him for 50 years after he passes away. That type of brand will give his children more options. They can expand his work and continue to generate income from the company that he continues to build. It's easier to build a brand than ever before. You don't have to invest in supplies, retail locations, or any high-budget items. You can get started by creating a website, offering services that you can scale, producing content, and interacting with people on social media. Those efforts won't guarantee that you build a successful brand. However, if you are strategic about your core services, how you will identify your target customers, what marketing channels you use, and how you guide people along the customer journey, it's possible to develop a successful brand. Want a free E-ZPass transponder? Delaware's giving them away in August

Delaware motorists have the opportunity to receive a free E-ZPass transponder during a month-long promotion this August. The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles and E-ZPass Delaware are offering the free devices to anyone who opens a new individual E-ZPass Delaware account between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31, 2025. The offer does not apply to commercial accounts. Delaware E-ZPass account holders pay lower toll rates than out-of-state drivers or those using toll-by-plate. To help drivers estimate costs more accurately, the Delaware Department of Transportation will update its online toll calculator on Aug. 1. The update will reflect new rates for the state's three toll roads and pricing for vehicles with additional axles. To open an account, customers can visit call 1-888-397-2773, or visit an E-ZPass location in person. These include the E-ZPass Service Center in Dover and toll plazas in Dover, Middletown (Biddles Corner) and Newark. Walk-in service at toll plazas is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Toll fee increases set for August This free transponder event comes as tolls on several of Delaware's major roads are set to rise. Beginning Aug. 1, new rates will apply to I-95 in Newark, the US 301 Mainline and State Route 1 at Biddles Corner and Dover. On I-95 in Newark, the toll for two-axle vehicles will rise from $4.00 to $5.00 for both cash and E-ZPass users. At US 301 Mainline, the toll for two-axle E-ZPass users will increase from $4.00 to $5.00, while toll-by-plate customers will pay $7.00, up from $5.60. Toll amounts for interchanges along US 301 will vary. Drivers on SR 1 at Biddles Corner and Dover will see the following changes: Delaware E-ZPass holders: Weekday toll: $1.50 (two-axle vehicles) Weekend toll: $4.00 Cash and non-Delaware E-ZPass users: Weekday toll: $2.50 Weekend toll: $6.00 Can I use my Delaware E-ZPass outside of the state? Yes, the transponder works in the E-ZPass network, which includes Delaware and 18 other states. The 18 other states are: New Jersey Pennsylvania Maryland New York Massachusetts New Hampshire Maine Rhode Island Virginia West Virginia North Carolina Geogia Florida Kentucky Ohio Indiana Illinois Minnesota DMV fee increases to begin in October The Delaware Department of Transportation has also announced increases to DMV fees beginning on Oct. 1, 2025.
