Authorities investigating tragic KZN crash, death toll revised to 8

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the police are investigating the cause of a crash in which eight people, mostly mothers, tragically lost their lives in the early hours of Sunday morning along the N2 near the Mtunzini Toll Plaza.
According to KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, the collision occurred at around 6:47am and involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-1 vehicle transporting members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC).
While Duma initially gave the death toll as nine, authorities later confirmed that one of the bodies had been mistakenly counted twice and the correct death toll was eight.
The victims were part of a group of 24 congregants travelling to Dukuduku in Mtubatuba, in northern KZN when tragedy struck.
Duma said that the tow truck struck the rear of the Hyundai H-1, resulting in multiple fatalities and serious injuries.
'Those who were injured have been taken to hospitals and we wish them a speedy recovery. Equally, we express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the Church,' he said.
The National Department of Transport also expressed its condolences.
Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa said they were 'deeply concerned and saddened by the loss of eight lives in a tragic road crash that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning on the N2 near Empangeni.'
'Preliminary reports indicate that the Hyundai H-1 was transporting members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) from their place of worship to the Dukuduku/Mtubatuba area when it was struck from behind by the truck,' they said.

Here's when you can renew your licence this month THE KZN Department of Transport released a statement informing the public of weekend dates and operating times of drivers licence testing centres and motor licensing offices for the month. Creecy dissolves RAF board amid governance and operational failures
The transport ministry said the board had undermined the RAF's ability to execute its mandate. Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy has dissolved the board of the embattled Road Accident Fund (RAF). The ministry said on Tuesday said the moves follows persistent governance and operational challenges that have beset the RAF and significantly undermined its ability to discharge its statutory mandate. Suspension At the weekend, suspended officials at the RAF, CEO Collins Letsoalo and the chief investment officer Sefotle Modiba briefed the media, claiming their suspensions are linked to efforts to improve the funds operations. Letsoalo was suspended last month for insubordination for his alleged failure to attend a Scopa meeting. Modiba was placed on precautionary suspension because of concerns regarding his previous employment at the City of Johannesburg and other matters that are currently under investigation. RAF board dissolved Creecy's spokesperson Collen Msibi said this has resulted in a loss of confidence in the board's ability to run the RAF effectively. Msibi said the protracted and costly litigation pursued by the RAF on the application of accounting standards has resulted in further strain on the entity's financial resources and capacity. 'The inconsistent and, at times, reckless handling of the suspension of the Chief Executive Officer, that attracted a legal challenge and institutional uncertainty. The frequent incurrence of default judgments against the RAF exacerbating its contingent liabilities and weakening its financial sustainability 'The failure by the Board to fill at least two critical executive positions, which are critical to the mandate of the Fund, namely, Chief Claims Officer and Head of Legal. This has resulted in the loss of confidence in the board's ability to run the entity effectively,' Msibi said. RAF commitment Msibi said Creecy has reiterated the department's commitment to continue to pursue all necessary measures to restore institutional stability and enhance the RAF's capacity to fulfil its statutory obligations to road accident victims. He added that Creecy further emphasized the department's intent to finalize the Road Accident Benefit Scheme Bill, which will introduce a no-fault system to make it easier for road accident victims to access the benefits without costly legal bills. eThekwini responds to DA's claim about flood victims as 'political grandstanding'
DURBAN - The eThekwini Metro Municipality has responded to claims by the Democratic Alliance (DA) that it failed to take responsibility when flood victims were evicted from their temporary residence. At least 150 people were left stranded when the Bayside Hotel threw them out on the street over the delayed payment of R128 million by government. The DA has called on the SA Human Rights Commission and Public Protector to investigate human rights violations, citing the municipality's account for the eviction. The metro has refuted the claims accusing the DA of playing politics. Last week, when the flood victims were left destitute, Human Settlement MEC Siboniso Duma went to Gauteng to meet the ministry to resolve the matter. This was followed by a R30 million purchase of the Montclair Lodge to house the flood victims. Despite this intervention, the DA said the metro should have acted first since the victims are residents of eThekwini. DA eThekwini caucus leader, Thabani Mthethwa, said, 'Whether those people were put in there by the national or provincial government, as part of the District Development Model the Municipality should have taken responsibility in making sure that they are taken care of.' Meanwhile city spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said, 'The actions of reporting the Bayside Hotel evictions of the flood victims to the Human Rights Commission and the Public Protector is an exercise in futility, and desperate political grandstanding because the matter relating to the dignified resettlement of flood victims has been sufficiently dealt with by all spheres of government.'
