New route for third annual Run With Responders 5K

CTV News3 days ago
Windsor's Run with Responders is coming back this year, this time with a new route.
The third annual Run With Responders 5K is quickly approaching.
The event takes place on July 27 along Windsor's riverfront trail.
It features a 5-kilometre run, along with a kids' dash, and an 800-metre run which is sponsored by AM800.
Event co-director Dave Orshinsky said first responders will be participating in the event, but the run is also open to the general public.
'Let's say we have 400 participants, we might have 70 or 80 first responders but all the rest are the regular folks that come out and they should come out and they should thank the first responders for what they do and just be part of that whole celebration if you will,' said Orshinsky.
He said this year's run route along the riverfront has changed.
'We're heading west this time, we used to head east on the event so we're heading west on the riverfront trail and we're going all the way down past Streetcar 351 and then we're going into the Windsor Sculpture Gardens, turning around and coming back,' he said.
'So, from a runner's perspective, a walker's perspective, it's a lot more interesting, a lot more things to look at this time.'
Orshinsky said they're hoping to get 400 participants.
'We're very close to 260 and we have at least a couple weeks to go, and we will take registrations right on site on the day of the event on the day of the event as well too,' said Orshinsky.
The event supports three charities, including Canadian Mental Health Association - Windsor-Essex County Branch, Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics and Windsor Firefighters Benefit.
Orshinsky said they do not have a fundraising goal but are hoping to raise at least $5,000 for each of the organizations.

Lions pounce on Elks 32-14 for second straight win

Nathan Rourke passed for 345 yards and two touchdowns as the B.C. Lions won the latest clash of the Canadian quarterbacks, emerging with an easy 32-14 victory over the Edmonton Elks on Sunday. James Butler also rushed for 172 yards and a touchdown for the Lions (3-3), who have won two straight. Quarterback Tre Ford passed for only 34 yards as Edmonton was held to just 160 yards in net offence on the night, much of that coming when the game was already out of reach. The Elks dropped to 1-4. There was no scoring until late in the opening quarter when Sean Whyte nailed a 33-yard field goal. The Lions made it 10-0 five minutes into the second quarter when Rourke completed a short pass to Jevon Cottoy and he danced out of the clutches of a defender and dove into the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown. Edmonton caught a break when a Rourke pass went off a helmet on the line and was caught by defensive lineman Jake Ceresna, who promptly fumbled it before teammate Tyrell Ford dropped on it on the B.C. 19. It would eventually lead to a one-yard TD plunge by backup quarterback Cody Fajardo. The Lions came roaring back to restore their 10-point lead with two minutes left in the first half as Butler powered his way through for a 15-yard rushing TD. B.C. looked to have extended its lead on a massive 92-yard punt return touchdown by Seven McGee, but the play was nullified on an illegal block call. With just eight seconds left in the second quarter, however, Rourke completed a seven-yard TD pass to Stanley Berryhill III to take a 24-7 lead into halftime. After gaining two points on a safety on Edmonton's previous possession, Whyte kicked a 36-yard field goal with 3:24 remaining in the third. Whyte added a 31-yard field goal with five minutes left in the fourth. Fajardo replaced Ford at QB late in the fourth and completed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Kurleigh Gittens Jr. Lions: Host the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday, July 19. Elks: Visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday, July 25.

Foam run for a good cause: 5K Kitchener event raises money for Make-a-Wish

A fun and charitable run is making it's way across the country this summer, stopping in Kitchener for the first time. CTV's Karis Mapp explains. A fun and charitable run is making it's way across the country this summer, stopping in Kitchener for the first time. Nearly 4,000 participants took part in Saturday's 5K Foam Fest at Victoria Park. The course featured a variety of obstacles, as well as 2.5 million cubic feet of foam. 'They start and finish the race in a mountain of foam. Somewhere along the way, they get to the death drop obstacle,' explained the events operations manager Stephen Passero. ' We have slip and slides, we've got cargo net climbs. There's a little bit of something for everybody regardless of ability.' There was also live music, a kids zone and food vendors. Choosing either to run or walk, organizers say the goal is to ensure everyone has fun. 'It's not a hard core race. We don't keep time. It's for absolutely everybody age seven and up. Even those who are under the age of seven, we still have some amazing things for them to do.' All proceeds raised will support Make-A-Wish, a charity that grants wishes for children with critical illnesses.
