Mumbai: BEST revives iconic Route No. 1 as A1 AC service after year-long pause
In a statement issued Monday, BEST said that the A1 service will run six departures in the morning and another six in the evening on all weekdays. The schedule has been designed to cater to peak-hour office travel.
'The earlier Route No. 1 was temporarily discontinued as part of BEST's ongoing route rationalisation exercise. The new A1 service is a restructured version, introduced to improve operational efficiency and commuter comfort,' said the BEST spokesperson.
Route No. 1, once one of the city's oldest and most recognisable bus lines, was discontinued quietly in mid-2024. In its absence, the undertaking introduced Route 51 and other alternatives that covered portions of the same corridor. However, regular commuters complained that the replacements did not fully serve the needs of those travelling between Colaba and Bandra Reclamation.
The original Route No. 1 holds a unique place in Mumbai's transport history. It was first introduced as Route A during the city's tram era and later renumbered when motor buses took over. In 1937, it became the first route to feature a double-decker bus, a Daimler-class vehicle that would go on to define Mumbai's visual transport identity for decades.
For several years, Route 1 connected Colaba to Mahim and was later extended to Bandra Reclamation. It remained in regular operation even during the Covid-19 lockdowns when local trains were restricted to essential workers. A night variant, Route 1 Ltd, had also earned a niche following among late-night travellers and was affectionately dubbed as 'vampire route' by bus enthusiasts.
The newly reintroduced A1 service will run air-conditioned buses only, with departure points at Electric House and Bandra Reclamation Bus Depot. Morning departures are scheduled for 8.00 am, 8.30 am, 9 am, 9.31 am, 10.05 am and 10.35 am. Evening services will run at 3.40 pm, 4.10 pm, 4.40 pm, 5.15 pm, 5.45 pm and 6.15 pm.

Positive on auto, expect rate cuts to revive PV, two-wheeler sales: Varun Goel
Synopsis Varun Goel anticipates growth in the auto sector due to monetary easing and expected rate cuts, benefiting passenger car and two-wheeler sales. Tractor companies are favored by a positive monsoon, while premium motorcycles and SUVs thrive due to premiumization. Goel is selectively positive on the chemical sector, favoring specialty chemicals and battery-related chemicals. Varun Goel, Senior Fund Manager, Mirae Asset Investment Managers, says the auto sector is poised for growth due to monetary easing and anticipated rate cuts, which are expected to lower EMIs and boost sales in both passenger car and two-wheeler segments. A positive monsoon is favoring tractor companies, while premium motorcycles and SUVs continue to thrive due to the ongoing premiumization trend in the Indian market. ADVERTISEMENT What is your view on the entire auto pack? Lots have happened with Nifty Auto on Tuesday. It is the top sectoral gainer. Hero Moto has been outperforming the market. Plus there was Tesla's entry into India with a Mumbai showroom. Where do you see auto as a pack headed? Varun Goel: As far as auto is concerned and for that matter other various cyclical sectors, the growth outlook should get better because of the significant monetary easing that we have seen so far this financial year and with inflation data continuing to remain benign, we expect further rate cuts in the future. Our view is as EMIs are reduced both for home loans and auto loans, the auto sector should benefit. We expect a revival in sales as far as the passenger car industry is concerned. Even on the two-wheeler side, sales growth should improve as we approach the festive season. We like companies in the tractor space considering that the monsoon continues to be good. The higher-end motorcycle and SUV spaces also continue to do well as the premiumisation story in the Indian vehicle market continues to play out. So, we maintain a constructive stance on the auto space going forward. Rural slump ends India's four-year auto sales run, exports hit record high The other pocket that is doing well is the chemical pack and Rallis India came out with a very good set of numbers. What is your analysis on the chemical pack because, of late, a lot of these stocks are showing momentum but do you like any particular pocket within that? Varun Goel: As far as the chemical sector is concerned, we have seen almost three years of down cycle. Post Covid, the Chinese supply came back in a very significant manner because of which there was pressure both on realisations and volume growth. Incrementally, we would be more positive on specialty chemical names. Companies which are in the battery chemical space and which are focusing on creating electrolytes and other battery related chemicals, is a niche theme that is expected to do well. Some of the water treatment and purification related chemicals is also a theme which looks interesting and so we would be positive on the sector in a selective manner. Mumbai: BEST revives iconic Route No. 1 as A1 AC service after year-long pause
After nearly a year off the road, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking has reinstated its iconic Route No. 1 in a new avatar.
