Lionel Messi decision defended by Inter Miami boss amid strange criticism
Javier Mascherano was in the rare position of being forced to defend his decision to play Lionel Messi. The Inter Miami boss allowed the Argetina star to complete 90 minutes in a comfortable win over Montreal.
Mascherano 's side secured a significant advantage when Messi scored his second goal of the game to make the score 4-1 in Canada. The MLS giants were unable to increase the scoreline as they earned three points on their return from Club World Cup action where they failed to make it past Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16 of the tournament.
And former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder Mascherano was asked why he persisted with Messi, 38, on the field rather than taking the opportunity to manage his minutes on Saturday evening. The 41-year-old offered some simple reasoning.
"We have to understand that Leo is happiest when he's playing football," Mascherano said. "Every time he's fit, he's going to want to play - and we're going to let him.
"He gives us a huge advantage when he's on the pitch, and of course, we want to make the most of it."
Mascherano did concede that his team had a hectic fixture list coming up as they face New England Revolution, Nashville, FC Cincinnati and New York Red Bulls in the space of 10 days. And that was why the coach was pleased to claim a victory over Montreal.
"We have consecutive games coming up, and we'll need every player ready. Whoever gets the chance has to be prepared," he said. 'This was an important match - Montreal was coming in with good momentum, but our team rose to the occasion."
Messi's presence for away games has formed a major talking point since he arrived in MLS from PSG. The contender for the title of best player ever has proven a major draw for the league across all quarters, such is his profile.
Montreal sold out the Stade Saputo for the visit of Inter Miami, and there was no shortage of pink kits worn by supporters in the stands. The no unfamiliar occurence has some benefit for Mascherano's side.
'I don't want to overanalyze it," he said. "We're very lucky - when we play away, most of the crowd comes to see Messi, and a lot of them are actually fans of his. They usually try to support him, and that's something we don't take for granted," he said.

Full extent of Jamal Musiala injury as Bayern Munich star gets layoff prognosis
Bayern Munich and Germany star Jamal Musiala picked up a sickening injury during his side's Club World Cup clash with Paris Saint-Germain and looks set to be sidelined for an extended period Jamal Musiala will miss the majority of next season after suffering a horrific leg break. The Bayern Munich star was involved in a brutal collision with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Club World Cup. It was immediately clear that the 22-year-old had picked up a serious injury as was stretched off the pitch in agony. And having put him through testing for the issue, Bayern have revealed how long Musiala will be out for. A statement from the German giants confirmed that the midfielder had 'sustained a fracture of the fibula associated with a broken and dislocated ankle' and had flown back to Munich ahead of corrective surgery. "This serious injury and the long absence are a real shock for Jamal and all of us. This hits FC Bayern hard," Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl added. "Everyone knows how immensely important Jamal is for our game and what a central role he plays for our team. Furthermore, the human impact is incredibly bitter; we all feel for him: Jamal has just recovered from an injury and will now be out for another long period. "He will get everything he needs from us. We will support him intensively and be by his side, and we are already looking forward to him being back on the pitch." Bayern icon Manuel Neuer was critical of Donnarumma for his reaction after being involved in the incident. He said: "You just accept that your opponent might get injured. It could even be a team-mate. "So I went over to him and said: 'Don't you want' - because it was half-time anyway - 'don't you want to go over there? Jamal is lying there, he'll probably stay in the hospital, he has a serious injury, and I think it's only right to go over there out of respect and wish him well and just say a little sorry.' Who will win the Club World Cup? Share your thoughts in the comments below "After that, he went over to Jamal. Fairness is always important, and I would have reacted differently." Musiala's injury comes after a stunning season for Bayern. He had scored 21 goals and notched eight assists in all competitions - a record that includes three goals at the Club World Cup. He might look to a fellow star at the tournament for a little bit of advice following a similar injury. Chelsea star Wesley Fofana sustained a horrendous leg break in 2021 when playing for Leicester. The Frenchman ended up being ruled out for around seven months, missing around 63 matches in all. ‘He lit up a room': Trent Alexander-Arnold pays tribute to Diogo Jota
Trent Alexander-Arnold has described his former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota as 'someone who lit up a room'. The Liverpool forward died along with his brother, André Silva, in a car accident in Spain on Thursday. Alexander-Arnold is at the Club World Cup in the United States with Real Madrid having left Anfield at the end of their title-winning 2024-25 season. He spoke to Dazn after Madrid's quarter-final victory over Borussia Dortmund in New Jersey. 'Some things are bigger than the game,' the right-back said. 'It has been difficult but it's been very emotional, very heartwarming to see the footballing world uniting and come together to show their love and support to him and his family, and obviously his brother as well. 'So although it's been difficult, it's also been a nice showing out from everyone, all clubs, all people, uniting and showing love and support for what must be a mind-blowingly hard time for the family. 'I've been … around him and his brother, his family, his amazing wife, his parents, his amazing three children. It's truly, truly heartbreaking to wake up to news like that. It's something that you would never, ever expect. 'He was a very close friend, someone who lit up a room when he was in it. I shared the dressing room for five years [and have] amazing memories on and off the pitch with him. It goes without saying he will never be forgotten by anyone. He will live long in all our memories for the amazing man and player he was.'

‘A real shock': Bayern Munich confirm Musiala out for long period with leg fracture
Bayern Munich have said Jamal Musiala faces a 'lengthy' recovery from a leg fracture after his collision with Paris Saint-Germain's goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Club World Cup. Bayern said on Sunday that Musiala had flown back from Florida to Munich that morning for surgery on the injury the attacking midfielder picked up in Saturday's loss to PSG in the quarter-finals. Bayern said doctors found Musiala 'sustained a fracture of the fibula [a bone in the lower leg] associated with a broken and dislocated ankle'. The Bayern board member for sport, Max Eberl, said in a statement: 'This serious injury and the lengthy lay-off are a real shock for Jamal and us all.' 'This hits FC Bayern. Everyone knows how immensely important Jamal is for our game and what a central role he has in our team. Furthermore, there's also a huge human impact and we all feel for him. Jamal has just come back from an injury and will now be out for another long period. He'll get everything he needs from us. We'll support him intensively, be by his side and already look forward to when he's back on the pitch.' The Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was fiercely critical of Donnarumma over the incident on Saturday. '[This is] a situation where you don't have to go in like that; that's reckless,' he said. 'He accepts the risk of injuring his opponent … It's a question of respect to go over and wish the guy all the best. He did it afterwards. Fairness is always important. I would have reacted differently.' Vincent Kompany added that he had 'rarely been so angry' over an incident on the pitch. 'Someone like Jamal lives for this [game],' the Bayern head coach said. 'He's here after a setback and something like this happens. And you feel powerless.' After the match, Donnarumma posted on Instagram: 'All my prayers and well wishes are with you Jamal.' The PSG manager, Luis Enrique, said Musiala was ''very unlucky that Gigi fell on him … I wish him the best. There is no bad intent.'
