Google Is Adding a Battery Health Menu to the Pixel 8a, but Not the Pixel 8 Pro

Yahoo06-05-2025
Google has confirmed that its new Battery Health menu, first seen in Android 16 Beta 3, will only be available on the latest Pixel 9 series and the last released Pixel 8 device, the Pixel 8a, as reported by Android Authority.
The company says that this tool will not be available on older Pixel devices, including the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro—which were released just a few months before the Pixel 8a and are flagship-level phones, unlike the 8a. This means that users of these earlier models will not be able to check their battery's health using Google's own system.
The Battery Health menu can be found in the Settings app on supported devices, given that they are running the latest Android 16 beta. As the name suggests, it gives users information about their phone's current battery capacity as a percentage of its original level.
It also gives tips for extending battery life, such as turning on Adaptive Charging or limiting the maximum charge to 80%. This tool has been a standard part of iPhones since 2018, even on older models like the iPhone 6, but Google's version will only be available on its newest hardware.
Overall, Google made a bad move. I hope they implement it soon, or at least specify exactly why the feature works in the budget device but not the flagships.

9 essential Perplexity AI search tips and tricks

All right, settle in, folks, because today we're going to try to out-Google Google with the next generation of search: Perplexity. So, what exactly is Perplexity, and how's it different from other AI chatbots like Gemini, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot? Gemini, ChatGPT, and Copilot are primarily generative AI tools meant for creating text, writing code, brainstorming ideas, and engaging in free-form conversations. They 'generate' stuff based on their training data. Perplexity is an answer engine. Its main job is to give you accurate, sourced answers to your questions by searching the internet in real time. It's built for research and fact-finding. Instead of just generating text, it's designed to summarize, synthesize, and cite information from across the web. And the best part? A lot of Perplexity's brainpower is available right out of the box for free, no wallet required. Let's take things for a spin using one overarching example throughout: the rapid evolution of electric vehicle (EV) battery technology. Ask your question like a human Perplexity understands natural language. Just type your question clearly, like you're asking a person: 'What are the latest breakthroughs in EV battery technology?' Choose your sources This is where you tell Perplexity where to look. Even with the free version, you get access to powerful source filters. Look for the 'Set sources for search' dropdown in the lower-right corner of the search box. It looks like a globe. Web (default) is for general news, current events, popular sites, and the like. For our EV example, this is perfect for getting an overview of 'What are the latest breakthroughs in EV battery technology?' It'll pull from tech blogs, auto news, and general science sites. Academic sources is for scientific papers, scholarly articles, and research journals. Think: 'Detailed chemical mechanisms of solid-state battery electrolytes.' Social sources is for discussions, opinions, and real-world experiences from real people. Use Social and ask, 'What are consumer experiences with EV range anxiety for new battery types?' And Finance sources is best for market data, company reports, and investment news: 'Investment trends for companies developing next-gen EV batteries.' Follow up, then follow up some more Perplexity is designed for conversation. After it gives you an answer, you can ask follow-up questions within the same thread. Our initial 'Web' search about EV battery breakthroughs mentioned 'silicon anode technology.' advertisement You can then type, 'How does silicon anode technology impact charging times?' or, 'What are the main challenges in using silicon anodes in mass production?' Perplexity will remember your previous questions, making the conversation seamless. Double-check the sources Every single piece of information Perplexity gives you comes with clickable source citations. If Perplexity states, 'Solid-state batteries offer higher energy density (Source 1) and faster charging (Source 2),' those little numbers are links. Click them to jump directly to the original article, research paper, or news report. This lets you fact-check Perplexity's summary and see the information in its original context. Leverage your daily free 'Pro Searches' Perplexity gives free users a limited number of Pro Searches per day. Think of these as a daily allowance of super-powered queries. When you toggle on Pro Search (the looping X icon in the lower-left of the search box), Perplexity uses its most advanced AI models and a deeper search strategy. Save these for when your question is complex, highly nuanced, or when a regular search isn't quite hitting the mark. For example, if you're trying to compare the long-term cost-effectiveness of different EV battery chemistries, a Pro Search can often provide a more detailed and structured analysis. Other general tips So there you have it: Your crash course in getting started with Perplexity's free features, all framed around the fascinating world of EV battery tech. Some other quick tips . . . Be specific: 'EV batteries' is vague. 'Latest breakthroughs in EV battery recycling methods' is much better. Use your free features strategically: The source filters, unlimited follow-ups, and daily Pro Searches are powerful tools. Make use of the Discover and Spaces tabs: Located in the left-hand nav, Discover is a powerful news aggregator, and Spaces lets you cordon off related searches for stuff like vacation planning. Consider a Pro plan: for $20 per month, you get more citations, file and photo uploads, unlimited Pro Searches, and a bunch of other goodies. Go forth, explore, and may your information be ever accurate and your searches ever fruitful. The super-early-rate deadline for Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies Awards is this Friday, July 25, at 11:59 p.m. PT. Apply today.

We found Google's next Pixel-only calling feature and it's borrowed from Apple (APK teardown)

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google may be launching a new AI-powered 'Call Message' feature that acts like an on-device voicemail with live transcriptions and summaries. The feature works offline without using data or Wi-Fi and is likely powered by Gemini Nano. Like many AI features Google debuts with new Pixel phones, Call Message could be a Pixel 10 exclusive launching next month. Google already packs its Pixel phones with a bunch of smart calling features like Call Screening, Direct My Call, Hold for Me, and Call Notes. These features are powered by AI to make handling calls easier and less annoying. Now, it looks like Google is cooking up another new calling feature that could take things to the next level — an AI-powered voicemail system that works entirely on your device, no internet needed. An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. While inspecting the latest beta version of the Phone by Google app (version 184.0.785204977-publicbeta-pixel2024), we found a feature called 'Call Message.' Based on strings hidden in the app, this feature lets your phone take messages for missed or declined calls. It can even filter out spam calls, transcribe, and summarize everything in real time, right on your device. If someone calls you and you don't answer, your phone will ask them to leave a message. That message gets transcribed using on-device AI (most likely Gemini Nano), and you can view the audio, summary, and transcript in the Recents tab. The entire process will happen locally on your device since the feature doesn't use Wi-Fi or mobile data. However, if your phone is off or out of the network, Call Message won't work, and your carrier's voicemail will take over like usual. Additional code strings we found show just when Call Message (codenamed Beesly) kicks in: Beesly will activate when a call is missed. It also triggers when you manually reject a call from either the answer screen or a notification. Even if you decline a call from your connected Wear OS watch, Beesly will still start recording a message on your phone. A notification will confirm that Beesly is taking a message. Could Call Message be a Pixel 10 exclusive? There's a strong chance Call Message could debut as a Pixel 10 exclusive when the new phones launch next month. The feature's codename, 'Beesly,' follows Google's typical pattern for Pixel-only features. Past AI tools like Hold for Me and Direct My Call also had unique internal codenames during development, and many stayed Pixel-exclusive. What's even more telling is the app version number where we discovered the feature. The 'pixel2024' tag clearly points to a build meant for Pixel devices launched in 2024. Google often uses these tags when internally testing Pixel-first features. Perhaps Google will release Call Message as a Pixel 10 exclusive at first, but also roll it out to other Pixel phones at some point. It's also entirely possible the feature will take longer to mature and release later as part of a future Pixel Drop. If Call Message sounds a bit familiar, that's because it's similar to Apple's Live Voicemail feature. Finally, since the feature appears to rely on Gemini Nano, which is only available on select devices, it makes sense for Google to showcase it as part of the Pixel 10's exclusive AI experience. If Call Message sounds a bit familiar, that's because it's similar to Apple's Live Voicemail feature, which lets users view a real-time transcription of the message someone is leaving as they speak. However, Google's version seems to go a step further by potentially offering summaries, not just transcripts. Apple's version also works on-device, which is something Google seems to be taking inspiration from. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . Google's AI Overviews have 2B monthly users, AI Mode 100M in the US and India

Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared an update on the adoption of consumer-facing AI apps and features, including Google Search's AI Overviews, Gemini, and AI Mode. On the company's Q2 2025 call with investors, Pichai shared that AI Overviews — a Google Search feature offering an AI summary of search results available in 200 countries and territories — now has 2 billion monthly users, up from 1.5 billion in May 2025. In addition, Google's Gemini app has grown to 450 million monthly active users. 'We continue to see strong growth and engagement with daily requests growing over 50% from Q1,' Pichai said of the app. Meanwhile, AI Mode — a way to use Google Search via an AI chat experience to get more in-depth answers — has over 100 million monthly active users, Pichai said. The service is available in the U.S. and, more recently, India, but is still rolling out. The CEO also said the experience will be upgraded in the near future with the addition of the advanced research tool, Deep Search, and more personalized responses. On the developer front, Google said more than 9 million have built with Gemini and over 70 million videos have been produced with the Veo 3 AI model since May. Google Vids, a Veo-powered feature for text-to-video AI generation in Google Workspace, now has nearly 1 million monthly active users. In Google Meet, over 50 million people used AI-powered meeting notes in Google Meet, the company also said. The stats are meant to illustrate consumer demand for AI features. For instance, Google shared that AI Overviews were driving over 10% more Google Search queries, for the types of searches that show them. However, it's arguably difficult to determine how many people have truly and willingly turned to AI in Search, when the features have been thrust upon them as aggressively as they have been. Across Google's platform and products, Google quantified its growth by monthly tokens processed, saying that it had announced at its developer conference in May that it had processed 480 trillion monthly tokens, and that figure has now doubled to 980 trillion monthly tokens. 'We are seeing significant demand for our comprehensive AI product portfolio,' Pichai told investors. 'Of course, this is all possible because of the long-term investments we have made in our differentiated, full-stack approach to AI.' Investors, however, reacted negatively to Google's plans to increase its capital expenditure spending to keep up with the AI race, which sent the stock slipping shortly after earnings were announced.
