Karnataka High Court to pronounce its verdict on June 12 on legality of arrest of RCB and DNA executives in stampede case
The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday reserved its order on the petitions filed by four representatives of Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd. (RCSPL) and DNA Networks Pvt. Ltd., who have questioned the legality of their arrest in connection with the June 4 stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in the city during the celebration of RCB's victory in IPL-2025 tournment.
Justice S.R. Krishna Kumar, who heard the arguments on the petition, said he would pronounce the verdict on Thursday afternoon.
The petitions were filed by Nikhil Sosale, head (Marketing and Revenue), RCSPL; Sunil Mathew, director, and Kiran Kumar, event manager of DNA; and Shamant N.P. Mavinakere, a freelancer with DNA.
Earlier, State Advocate-General Shashi Kiran Shetty and Additional State Public Prosecutor B.N. Jagadeesha defended their arrest, claiming that the police adhered to all the procedures laid down in law and by the apex court while arresting them.
'No permission'
Mr. Shetty said these four persons were among others connected with the RCSPL and DNA, who were responsible for making social media posts inviting cricket fans to come to the stadium for the victory celebrations, even though there was no permission to organise the event at the stadium.
Also, the A-G said that neither the Karnataka State Cricket Association nor the RCSPL had sought permission under the provisions of the Licensing and Controlling of Assemblies and Processions (Bangalore city) Order, 2008, notified in 2009, for the event.
The communications sent by the KSCA or others were only a mere intimation of the possible victory celebrations and no formal application, the A-G said while contending that in any case, the police had not granted permission to the victory celebrations held in the stadium, and hence it was illegal and punishable in law.
Holding of illegal event led to the death of 11 persons in the stampede as the RSCPL had failed to manage the crowd, Mr. Shetty contended.
On CM and Dy. CM
While the A-G did not say anything on the court's query whether Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had stated at a media conference that he had ordered the arrest of officials of the RCB and others, the written statement filed by the police stated that contention of the petitioners, that their arrest was solely made on the Chief Minister's order, was not relevant for deciding the legality of their arrest.
On the petitioners' claim that Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had participated in the celebrations in the stadium, the A-G said he was only an invitee and it was was the RCSPL which held the event without permission.

Kavya Maran may release THIS star player from SRH before IPL 2026, he is a six-hitting sensation, his name is...
Sunrisers Hyderabad co-owner Kavya Maran might part ways with a rising star ahead of IPL 2026. Known for his explosive six-hitting, the young batter impressed in his debut season but could be released due to tactical changes. Aniket Verma was brilliant in his first season in the IPL where he scored 236 runs in 14 games with an average of over 27. His best performance was in his second game when he played a scorching 74 against Delhi Capitals in his third match. The capability to counter the spin bowling is one of the most remarkable features of Aniket. He was the quickest to hit 12 sixes in an IPL match as he did it in 66 balls. Sunrisers Hyderabad have taken a core-based approach on the auction, in the two preceding seasons. SRH has a core of players like Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, and Pat Cummins at the center of its setup, so it will not be keen on experimentation in its quest to be successful. Aniket is not a part of this core group and hence may not be part of their long term retention strategy. Aniket has proved to be susceptible to pace even though he plays destructively against spin. When the pinch-hitter is likely to face any form of bowling, particularly at the death overs, then his limited use of this single strength may prove a factor. Aniket was signed only at Rs 30 lakh during his first season, and may now be hoping to get a release and re-enter the auction pool hoping of getting a higher bid. His performances and the hype that he has generated could be something that franchises are considering, particularly those who have a vacancy in their lower-order needing powerful stroke play, especially against spin bowling. However, despite the fact that SRH did not qualify for the playoffs, the franchise is not expected to drastically change. Their general approach appears to be somewhat successful, although slight changes such as removal of flat dimensional players in favor of more multipotent ones might be around the corner. Aniket may just be another victim of this strategic tweaking, particularly when he fails to broaden his scope on the fast bowling.

IOWA: Rising shuttler Ayush Shetty notched up his first BWF World Tour title with a commanding straight-games victory over Canada's Brian Yang in the men's singles final of the US Open Super 300, ending India's title drought this season. The 20-year-old, a 2023 junior world championships bronze winner, defeated the third seeded Yang 21-18, 21-13 in 47 minutes on Sunday to cap off an impressive week, which included a come-from-behind win against top seed Chou Tien Chen in the semifinals. It was Shetty's third victory over Yang, having defeated him twice earlier this year at Malaysia and Taipei Open. In the women's singles final, 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma finished runner-up after a fighting three-game loss to top seed Beiwen Zhang of the United States. Playing her first World Tour final, the unseeded teenager went down 11-21, 21-16, 10-21 in 46 minutes. Shetty vs Yang The men's singles final began evenly with scores tied at 6-6, but Shetty, seeded fourth, surged ahead with a string of winners to lead 11-6 at the interval. AB de Villiers Slams 'Mismanagement' As Gautam Gambhir Restricts Jasprit Bumrah To 3 Tests
On the tour of England, one of the toughest places for the Indian team to win a Test series, the fact that the tourists would have Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the best pacer in the world, available for just three games out of five, is baffling for many. Bumrah, who featured in almost the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season for the Mumbai Indians, has been allotted just three games against England. India's head coach Gautam Gambhir already made the decision clear, making many wonder why lesser-important games couldn't be removed from Bumrah's schedule to manage his workload. Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers, who also had to manage the workload of Dale Steyn during their active days, isn't onboard with the Indian team management's decision over the call to give Bumrah just three matches on the 5-Test tour. "He is probably the top bowler in the world in all formats right now. So, it's very difficult to decide a way to rest him," De Villiers said on his YouTube channel. "But in my opinion, Test cricket is the ultimate form of the game. And this Test series probably would've been the one, in my opinion, to get him ready for all five Test matches." Citing Steyn's example, De Villiers said that Bumrah should've ideally been rested in lesser-important T20Is and ODIs. "That's what we used to do with Dale (Steyn). Rest him in lesser important T20 and ODI series and get him ready for the big Test series against Australia, England, and India away from home... New Zealand to a certain extent, depending on the rankings at that time," he explained. The former Proteas captain even threw the word 'mismanagement' by the Indian team as he questioned what led to the team taking such a call. "So, I don't know if it was mismanagement or perhaps because he recently got back from injury, sort of saw the IPL as the warmup phase," he said. "Maybe, went to the surgeon, who let him know, 'You can't play the five Test matches.' So, I mean you got to respect that, and at the end of the day, it's up to Team India to sort of manage him well," he added. "It doesn't get bigger than that, guys, except for maybe the WTC final."
