Oil tumbles as Opec+ hikes August output more than expected

Business Times11 hours ago
[SINGAPORE] Oil prices slipped more than 1 per cent on Monday after Opec+ surprised markets by hiking output more than expected in August, raising concerns about oversupply.
Brent crude futures fell 80 cents, or 1.2 per cent, to US$67.50 a barrel by 0010 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude was at US$65.68, down US$1.32, or 2 per cent.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and their allies, a group known as Opec+, agreed on Saturday to raise production by 548,000 barrels per day in August.
'The increased production clearly represents a more aggressive competition for market share and some tolerance for the resulting decline in price and revenue,' said Tim Evans of Evans Energy in a note.
The August increase represents a jump from monthly increases of 411,000 bpd Opec+ had approved for May, June and July, and 138,000 bpd in April.
Opec+ cited a steady global economic outlook and healthy market fundamentals, including low oil inventories, as reasons for releasing more oil.

The decision will bring nearly 80 per cent of the 2.2 million bpd voluntary cuts from eight Opec producers back in the market, RBC Capital analysts led by Helima Croft said in a note.
However, the actual output increase has been smaller than planned so far and most of the supply has been from Saudi Arabia, they added.
In a show of confidence in oil demand, Saudi Arabia on Sunday raised the August price for its flagship Arab Light crude to a four-month high for Asia.
Goldman analysts expect Opec+ to announce a final 550,000 bpd increase for September at the next meeting on Aug 3.
Separately, the United States is close to finalising several trade agreements in the coming days and will notify other countries of higher tariff rates by July 9, US President Donald Trump said on Sunday, with the higher rates scheduled to take effect on Aug 1. REUTERS

Oil steadies as tight market supports despite big OPEC+ hike

LONDON :Oil on Monday shrugged off the impact of OPEC+ hiking output more than expected for August as well as concern about the potential impact of U.S. tariffs, with prices mostly reversing early losses as a tight physical market lent support. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and their allies, a group known as OPEC+, agreed on Saturday to raise production by 548,000 barrels per day in August, more than the 411,000 bpd hikes they made for the earlier three months. Brent crude futures fell as low as $67.22 a barrel but by 1145 GMT were up 36 cents, or 0.5 per cent, to $68.66. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $66.99, down 1 cent, and up from an earlier low of $65.40. "For now, the oil market remains tight, suggesting it can absorb additional barrels," said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo. The OPEC+ decision will bring nearly 80 per cent of the 2.2 million bpd voluntary cuts from eight OPEC producers back into the market, RBC Capital analysts, led by Helima Croft, said in a note. However, the actual output increase has been smaller than planned so far and most of the supply has been from Saudi Arabia, they added. In a show of confidence about oil demand, Saudi Arabia on Sunday raised the August price for its flagship Arab Light crude to a four-month high for Asia. Goldman analysts expect OPEC+ to announce a final 550,000 bpd increase for September at the next meeting on August 3. Oil had also come under pressure as U.S. officials flagged a delay on when tariffs would begin but failed to provide details on changes to the rates that will be imposed. Investors are worried higher tariffs could slow economic activity and oil demand. "Concerns over Trump's tariffs continue to be the broad theme in the second half of 2025, with dollar weakness the only support for oil for now," said Priyanka Sachdeva, a senior market analyst at Phillip Nova.

Government Raises Income Limit for GST Voucher Scheme; 1.5M Singaporeans to Receive Cash Payouts in August

The Ministry of Finance said on Monday, July 7, that over 1.5 million Singaporeans will receive up to S$850 (US$670) in cash payouts as part of the Goods and Services Tax Voucher (GSTV) scheme in August 2025. MOF said in a media release that the assessable income threshold for GSTV i.e. cash payouts will also be raised from S$34,000 to S$39,000 "as the incomes of lower- and middle-income Singaporeans have improved". According to the ministry, this will "maintain the coverage of the scheme". Adult Singaporeans who earn up to S$39,000 in assessable income and who own homes worth up to S$21,000 will receive S$850, while those whose homes are worth between S$21,000 and S$31,000 will receive S$450. As part of GSTV-MediSave, approximately 690,000 senior citizens in Singapore who qualify will also receive MediSave top-ups ranging from S$150 to S$450. For more details regarding their eligibility for the payouts, Singaporeans can check the govbenefits website. If eligible recipients have previously registered for GSTV-Cash and GSTV-MedSave, they will begin receiving their payments automatically on August 6. When their benefits have been credited, they will receive a letter or an SMS. According to MOF, a total of S$1.5 billion will be distributed during this GSTV exercise.
