KUCHING (May 30): The Bas.My Kuching service has now been extended to Batu Kawa to improve connectivity across various zones, said Michael Kong.
The Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) chairman said they are proud to fulfil requests from users in Batu Kawa following the successful launch of the programme's initial route.
'Starting now, six dedicated buses under the Bas.My Kuching programme will serve the Batu Kawa route, enhancing connectivity across a wide range of residential, educational, commercial and healthcare zones,' he said in a statement today.
Kong said the new route links cover residential areas namely Everbright Park, Taman Kwong Thiong, Taman Boulder Built, Tematu Hill, Taman Chungnion Villa, Jalan Field Force, Taman Desa Wira and RPR Batu Kawa; and schools – SJK Chung Hua No.4, SM Sunny Hill, SJK Chung Hua Batu Kawa and SJK Chung Hua Stapok.
He added that they also cover commercial areas namely Emart Batu Kawa, MJC Batu Kawa, Pines Square, Third Mile Market, Third Mile Commercial Centre and Batu Kawa Commercial Centre as well as hospitals – Timberland Medical Centre and Sarawak General Hospital.
According to him, the first bus from SJK Chung Hua Batu Kawa will start at 5.30am and the first bus from Saujana will run at 6.30am on weekdays.
He said the last bus on both routes will be 7.30pm.
'We have identified peak hours on weekdays between 6.30am– 8.30am and 4.30pm-7.30pm, and are increasing frequency during these times to every 30 minutes to meet anticipated demand,' he added.
Kong said they acknowledged that traffic congestion is a major issue for residents in Moyan, Malihah, Sejijak and the greater Batu Kawa area.
By offering this reliable and efficient public transport service, he hopes to provide a viable alternative to private car usage, thus easing traffic and reducing the environmental impact of urban commuting.
'This launch marks an exciting milestone in our ongoing commitment to transform and uplift the public transportation industry in Kuching and Sarawak.
'We encourage all residents of Batu Kawa to try out this new service and embrace public transport as a practical, comfortable and sustainable way to travel,' he said.
He said LPKP will continue to listen to the public's needs and expand its routes and services. Bas.My Kuching lead Michael Kong public transport

CPO prices dip on geopolitical tensions, expected to stabilise in 2026

RHB expect 2026 to be a more balanced year fundamentally, with lower year-on-year (YoY) crude palm oil (CPO) prices, but geopolitical risks will translate to more volatility. Spot CPO prices have moderated from MYR4,600-4,800/tonne in 1Q25 to a low of MYR3,780/tonne in May, only to bounce back to the current levels of MYR3,900-MYR4,100/tonne. The downward movement was mainly driven by geopolitics in the light of the US trade tariffs, wars, and crude oil prices falling, all of which pushed CPO prices in the same direction. Correlation between CPO prices and crude oil prices surged to 0.47 in Apr 2025 from -0.6 in 1Q25, and subsequently rose further to current levels of 0.68, due to raised geopolitical risks. Besides following crude oil price trends, CPO prices also followed the lead of soybean oil (SBO) prices which rose due to the recent US biofuel policy change, leading to a rise in blending targets. We expect CPO prices to remain volatile given the ever-changing geopolitical situation. Fundamentally however, global supply and demand will likely be more balanced in 2026, as supply improves, while demand should pick up given the more attractive relative prices. Supply of 17 oils and fats complex is expected to improve YoY in 2026F, coming from a partial recovery of palm, sunflower and rapeseed supplies, as well as continued growth from soybeans. Still, the stock/usage ratio of the 17 oils and fats complex is still expected to remain below the historical average of 13.6%, at 12.9% for Oct 2025/Sep 2026, albeit up from 12.7% in 2025. This leaves very little cushion in case of any short-term bullish supply or demand surprises, hence raising the risk of price volatility going forward. What does this mean for relative prices of vegetable oils and demand? Ignoring the noises from geopolitics, we expect 2026F to see: i) Muted soybean prices, due to continued strong supply in 2026F. ii) SBO prices remain supported at higher levels, due to the higher demand from increased US biofuel blending. iii) CPO prices to continue trading at a discount to SBO in the medium term (currently at USD217/tonne discount). iv) demand from price sensitive countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh come back. We revise down our CPO price assumptions to MYR4,100/tonne (from MYR4,300) for 2025 and to MYR4,000/tonne (from MYR4,100) for 2026 and 2027; but revise up our PK prices to MYR3,300/tonne for 2025F (from MYR2,800) and to MYR3,200/tonne for 2026F and 2027F (from MYR2,600). Post annual ESG review, we have made several changes to our ESG scores and rolled forward our valuation targets to 2026 (from 2025). All in, we downgraded two stocks to NEUTRAL – Kuala Lumpur Kepong (KLK) and Bumitama Agri (BAL), post earnings revision. —July 9, 2025 Main image: The

Global Economy To Slowdown In 2H Due To US Tariff Impact -- CGS International

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- The global economy is expected to face a slowdown in the second half (2H) of 2025 as tariffs imposed on the United States' (US) trading partners have impacted all economic actors, according to CGS International Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd (CGS MY). In a research note, CGS MY stated that while China was hit the hardest, other US allies, including Canada, Mexico and the European Union (EU), also suffered negative impacts. 'Positively, the US producers who baulked at the possibility of another trade war have frontloaded their purchases and piled up inventory in anticipation of rainy days, benefiting global trade, especially export-oriented ASEAN economies, which saw shipments and trade surpluses growing rapidly. 'That said, we think the front-loaded support is at its tail end as tariffs start to kick in and the US producers may have started looking inwards, dampening global demand,' it said. Meanwhile, CGS MY said that the ASEAN-4 nations - Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand - would likely lose some key growth momentum without the support from the US frontloading. The investment company has cut Indonesia's 2025 gross domestic product (GDP) forecast to 4.8 per cent from 5.0 per cent, while maintaining Singapore's GDP growth at 1.6 per cent. 'We forecast Thailand's GDP growth of 2.0 per cent in 2025, amidst dull sentiment on consumption, ongoing political turmoil, weak international arrivals, as well as risks from Trump's reciprocal tariffs,' it added. Furthermore, driven by the loss of the US market, CGS MY said that China may flood its products elsewhere, pricing out ASEAN producers. 'In our view, key to watch is the US bilateral talks with ASEAN countries on the reciprocal tariffs.

Malaysia's largest indoor vertical farm launched in Johor

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Digital agri-food company Farmbyte, part of the state-owned Johor Corporation, and a Singaporean agritech firm have launched the biggest indoor vertical farm in Malaysia. Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the RM40mil joint venture is a collaboration under the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). 'The project, formalised in April 2023, is a showcase of the strong and strategic partnership between Malaysia and Singapore in the area of food resilience. 'The collaboration between FarmByte and Singapore's Archisen marks a pioneering initiative under the JS-SEZ, and it will set an ecosystem to strengthen food security in both countries,' he said after launching the indoor farm here on Monday (July 7). He added that the 4,830 sqm (52,000 sq ft) indoor farm was also a clear demonstration that agriculture today was no longer constrained by land, climate or seasonality alone. 'Through controlled-environment agriculture, smart systems and cutting-edge vertical farming technologies, we are proving that Johor's food production can be sustainable, resilient and scalable,' he said. With an estimated annual output of 306,000 kg of fresh produce, the farm is a strategic asset supporting Malaysia's National Food Security Policy Action Plan and Singapore's '30 by 30' food resilience goal.
