The story of the slowest Flying Pig time ever was written in 2025
What you might not know is that another record was set on the full marathon course that winds its way up and down the hills of Cincinnati: the longest time. Doug Olberding, CEO of Pig Works, told the tale on this week's episode of the That's So Cincinnati podcast.
'There was a gentleman that had fallen pretty far behind, and he was moving very slowly. He did his last mile in 40 minutes – four o – 40 minutes,' Olberding said.
'At one point, I said to everybody that had been there (all day), I said look, if you feel like you're done for the day and you want to go home, you can go. … I think (only) two people left. And we had this group of our interns. I told the interns, 'You guys don't have to stay,' and they were like, 'No, we want to see this guy.'"
To assist runners who are struggling at the end of the 26.2-mile course, a small group of volunteers enters the race at mile 16, Olberding said.
'These three women are almost carrying this guy to the finish line. About 10 yards from the finish line, they let go of him, and he hobbles across the finish line. And we just erupted in cheers. … And I turned around, and this big burly guy that was sitting on a forklift truck was crying, and he said he'd never seen anything like this. He was amazed.
'He finished in like 10 hours and 5 minutes,' Oberding said. 'We think our previous record was 9 hours and 43 minutes, so he beat it pretty good, alright.'
Olberding, who oversaw his first Flying Pig as CEO this year, shared with That's So Cincinnati listeners how officials monitor weather, what time he arrives on race day, and why runners come from all over the world to participate in the Pig.

Madeira native Caty McNally, Venus Williams awarded wild cards to Cincinnati Open
Venus Williams and Caty McNally have been awarded the first two wild card spots to next month's Cincinnati Open in Mason, the tournament announced July 23. McNally, a Cincinnati native and Madeira High School product, recently returned to the WTA tour after underdoing elbow surgery. McNally hasn't played in her hometown tournament since 2022. McNally, who is currently ranked No. 129, is 1-4 all-time in the singles draw at the Cincinnati Open. She beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the Round of 64 in 2022 before falling to Ons Jabeur. Williams, 45, just became the second-oldest player to win a singles match on the WTA tour by defeating Cincinnati native Peyton Stearns in the DC Open July 22. The seven-time Grand Slam winner had not played in a tour event since March 2024. Williams' last win on the tour was in the 2023 Cincinnati Open and she'll try to notch another upset at the Lindner Family Tennis Center next month. Williams reached the Cincinnati Open semifinals in 2012 and the quarterfinals in 2019. 'He needs to be here.' Bengals' Duke Tobin, Mike Brown on rookie Shemar Stewart
All eyes are on the Cincinnati Bengals' defensive line as training camp is set to begin July 23. Four-time Pro Bowl defensive end and reigning NFL sacks leader Trey Hendrickson is still searching for a new contract and rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart is the lone unsigned first-round pick from April's draft. The Bengals and Stewart did not reach an agreement on a contract before rookies reported to camp July 19, according to The Enquirer's Kelsey Conway. "I hope Shemar (Stewart) comes in. He needs to be here," Tobin said, according to Ben Baby of ESPN. The holdup for Stewart, the No. 17 overall pick in April, and the Bengals continues to be a disagreement in his contract's language over future guaranteed money. and the payout structure of his signing bonus. "We say that if he got involved in conduct detrimental (to football), we'd have the right to terminate the guaranteed part of the back years. His agent says, 'oh, no, you can terminate the guaranteed part only for the remaining part of the year in which the event occurred.' "Oddly, something like this has never occurred in my memory with us," Brown continued. "I don't think it's gonna occur. So, we're sitting here arguing over something that I think is pretty remote." Stewart can't report to training camp without a signed contract. The Bengals reached an agreement on a four-year deal with second-round pick Demetrius Knight just before rookies reported to training camp. The Enquirer will update this story. Succession Star Went Vegan On Day 2 Of Filming This '90s Classic
Succession actor James Cromwell, who starred as farmer Arthur Hogget in the 1995 kids' film Babe, recently told The Guardian that the movie had an unexpected effect on his life. Based on Dick King-Smith's children's book The Sheep-Pig, the hit movie depicted a surprisingly clever pig who trains to become a sheep herder. The actor says he lasted just two days before making a lifelong change. 'On the second day of filming, I broke for lunch before everybody else. All the animals I'd worked with that morning were on the table, cut up, fricasseed, roasted and seared,' Cromwell told the publication. 'That was when I decided to become a vegan.' I didn't expect what happened: reflected back at me in the camera lens, I saw not me, but my father. 'On that thought, I laid the line: 'That'll do pig, that'll do.' At the time, I hadn't forgiven my father, who was a director and very critical of my work, which stung. 'I didn't know I had to forgive him.
