An accountant was fined RM3,300 by the Ampang Magistrates' Court after pleading guilty to secretly recording his male housemate while the latter was showering last week.
KUALA LUMPUR - An accountant was fined RM3,300 by the Ampang Magistrates' Court today after pleading guilty to secretly recording his male housemate while the latter was showering last week.
Magistrate Amalina Basirah Md Top imposed the sentence on Muhammad Fahmi Akmal Zakaria, 30, and further ordered that he serve five months' imprisonment in default of payment. The accused settled the fine.
Muhammad Fahmi was charged with intending to insult the modesty of a 31-year-old man by recording him while he was showering, with the purpose of violating his privacy and decency. The offence took place at an apartment in Taman Ukay Perdana at 8.10am on June 20.
He was charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum sentence of five years' imprisonment, a fine, or both.
According to the statement of facts, the victim noticed a flashing light on a bathroom shelf while showering and discovered a concealed recording device, which he suspected had been planted by his housemate.
The victim retrieved the accused's laptop and USB cable and discovered that the hidden recording device contained a memory card with a video of him showering.
The accused was arrested on June 20, and his recording device, mobile phone and laptop were seized. Investigations confirmed that he had recorded the victim showering.
Earlier, counsel Mohd Azizi Darus from the National Legal Aid Foundation appealed for a minimal fine, submitting that the accused earns only RM2,500 per month and is financially responsible for his family.
He further submitted that his client claimed the act was intended as a joke between housemates.
However, deputy public prosecutor Norhidayah Abdullah Sani urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, citing the seriousness of the offence and the need to send a clear message to both the accused and the public.
"Public interest must take precedence. This was not a joke. Had the video been disseminated, it would have severely humiliated the victim," she said. Norhidayah conducted the prosecution with DPP Ramanathan Alias Ashwin. - BERNAMA

Suspect nabbed in viral Puchong kidnapping case
SUBANG JAYA: Police have arrested a local man suspected of involvement in the abduction of another man during a roadside altercation along Persiaran Puchong Permai yesterday evening. Yesterday, it was reported that a video of the incident had been captured and was making its rounds on social media platforms. Wan Azlan said police were tracking down the suspects involved in the alleged abduction and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Man fined RM4,900 for promoting immoral acts via social media
KUALA TERENGGANU: A man who presented himself in a feminine manner was fined RM4,900 by the Syariah High Court here today for promoting immoral acts via social media last year. Senior judge Kamalruazmi Ismail meted out the fine after the accused, Mohamad Haikal Izzuwan Adun, 20, from Kelantan, pleaded guilty to the charge. The court also ordered that he serve six months in jail if he failed to pay the fine. In his judgment, Kamalruazmi said the offence had serious social repercussions and brought shame to the accused's home state, particularly since his case had viral and was linked to a police raid on an alleged gathering in Kemumin, near Pengkalan Chepa in Kelantan. "We were created as men, and we must accept that. This sentence is intended as a lesson, to prevent a repeat of actions that cast Kelantan in a negative light," he said. Haikal was charged with encouraging and promoting immoral behaviour through a social media platform at a homestay in Kemaman at 10pm on Oct 1, 2024. Authorities also seized 13 items related to the case. He was charged under Section 42 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) Enactment 2001 (Terengganu). The court was earlier told that Haikal was also arrested on July 20 after failing to appear for earlier proceedings. He was brought to court the following day and released on RM2,000 bail with one surety. He had been charged separately at the Kemaman Syariah Lower Court for cross-dressing. On July 22, he was fined RM2,500 or four months' jail.

Police bust porn scam syndicate, 57 arrested
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have uncovered a scam syndicate that distributed pornographic content under the guise of a registered company, following a raid conducted on July 1. The syndicate allegedly collected payments from users while providing only limited access to the content before disappearing. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said 57 people, including 26 women, were arrested during a raid at a business premises along Jalan Tun Razak. "All of them are believed to be involved in a 'like and share' scam, promoting and managing pornographic websites targeting users in India. "The syndicate is estimated to rake in profits of about 61,200 Rupees (RM3,000) per day, or approximately 1.22 million Rupees (RM60,000) a month," he told reporters at the CCID headquarters today.
