Father of five fined for assaulting alleged thief over mattress
MUAR: A father of five was fined RM2,000 by the magistrate's court here today after he pleaded guilty to assaulting a man who allegedly tried to steal a mattress belonging to his employer six years ago. H. Kartikesu, 38, admitted to the offence when the charge was read before magistrate Suzana Mokhtar. The court also ordered a six-month jail term in default of payment. Kartikesu paid the fine. According to the charge sheet, the self-employed man intentionally caused injury to a 38-year-old victim in front of a house along Jalan Bakri at 2.30pm on Jan 16, 2019. The charge was framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to one year's imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both. Police investigations revealed that the incident occurred after the victim attempted to steal a mattress left outside a house undergoing renovation. Enraged, Kartikesu allegedly assaulted him, causing bodily injuries which were later confirmed by medical personnel. The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Yasmin Mohd Piah, while Kartikesu was represented by Sakinah Suhaimi from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

Admin assistant pleads not guilty to asking intern to shave his pubic hair
KUALA LUMPUR: A civil servant pleaded not guilty at the magistrates' court today to a charge of outraging the modesty of a woman by asking her to shave his pubic hair in April. Mohamad Aznee Osman, 37, was accused of committing the act on a 23-year-old intern at 1.58pm at a government office here on April 4. The administrative assistant entered his plea after the charge was read out to him before magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad Dan. He faces up to five years' jail, a fine, or both upon conviction under Section 509 of the Penal Code. Clad in a black jacket and grey trousers, the father of three who was unrepresented, appeared calm as he stood near the dock during proceedings. Prosecuting officer Inspector M. Alli Nangai offered bail at RM5,000 with one surety. She also requested the court to fix a date for document submission and the appointment of counsel. However, a National Legal Aid Foundation representative appealed for a lower bail amount. "The accused earns RM2,000 a month and is the sole breadwinner of his family. "His wife is unemployed, and they have three children, one of whom is disabled. "The bail should be reasonable and not punitive." Farah Nabihah set bail at RM2,500 with one surety. "I want to remind the accused not to harass any witnesses in this case, especially the victim. "If there are complaints, bail will be revoked," she said.

Teen among three charged over viral group clash in front of surau
MUAR: Three men, including a teenager, claimed trial in separate courts here today to multiple charges linked to a violent clash between two groups that went viral last month. The accused Zeff Tan Kai Xuan, 19; a 17-year-old; and, Lau Kian Liang, 32, were charged separately with causing injuries, vandalism and criminal assault using weapons, including a machete and rattan cane. In the Sessions Court, Tan and the teenager were jointly charged with voluntarily causing hurt using a rattan cane on a 32-year-old man in front of a surau in Jalan Sakeh at 12.45am on June 9. They were charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries sentences of up to 20 years' jail, a fine or whipping upon conviction. Judge Sayani Mohd Nor allowed bail at RM7,000 each and fixed Aug 27 for document submission. Deputy public prosecutor Diyana Najihah Muhamed Fauzi prosecuted, while Low Song Kuan represented the accused. In a separate magistrate's court, Tan and the teenager were charged with committing mischief by smashing the windscreen of the same victim's car, under Section 427 of the Penal Code. However, magistrate Suzana Mokhtar postponed the plea to Aug 27 pending the presence of a Mandarin interpreter, as the teenager did not understand the charge read in Bahasa Malaysia. Bail was set at RM1,500 and RM2,000 for Tan and the teenager, respectively. Meanwhile, Lau was separately charged in the same court under Section 324 for causing hurt to a 41-year-old man with a machete at the same location, date and time. The court fixed Sept 3 for case mention, pending legal counsel appointment and document exchange. Lau was granted RM5,000 bail with one surety. Prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutors Yasmin Mohd Piah and Nur Ameerah Allaudeen, while Nor Hafizah Abdullah of the National Legal Aid Foundation represented Lau.

Beautician fined RM2,000 for prostitution at Muar hotel
MUAR: A 41-year-old beauty centre employee was fined RM2,000 by the magistrate's court here today after she pleaded guilty to prostitution at a hotel here on July 20. Magistrate Suzana Mokhtar handed down the sentence to Tan Chia Chia, a single mother. The court also ordered six months' jail in default of payment. Tan was charged with soliciting for the purpose of prostitution at a hotel along Jalan Abdullah, here, at 5.40pm on July 20. The offence under Section 372B of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of one year, a fine, or both, upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, police raided the hotel room following a tip-off on illicit activity and found Tan with a male client. A search of the room uncovered used and unused condoms, wet tissues and RM250 in cash, believed to be payment for services rendered. Deputy public prosecutors Yasmin Mohd Piah and Nur Ameerah Allaudeen prosecuted, while Norhafizah Abdullah of the National Legal Aid Foundation represented Tan.

Bukit Aman cop charged with murder over fatal April shooting in Kuching, claims trial
KUCHING, July 18 — A Bukit Aman traffic police officer with the rank of lance corporal claimed trial in the High Court here today to a charge of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a man at Jalan Stephen Yong in April. L/Cpl Genesis Nitchell David Reddy, 30, pleaded not guilty when the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code was read to him before Judicial Commissioner Datuk Faridz Gohim Abdullah. The Section provides for the death penalty, or if not sentenced to death, imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. The court set Aug 22, 2025 for further mention of the case and ordered the accused to be remanded at Puncak Borneo Prison pending the date. Deputy public prosecutor Jean Siow Chung Hwei appeared for the prosecution, while Genesis was represented by counsels Russell Lim, Brendan Ting, and Zoe Chan from the National Legal Aid Foundation. On April 26, two men showed up at the Batu Kawa police station around 5.30am to report that their friend, Muhammad Zaki, had been shot while inside a car. Police later found the victim dead with a gunshot wound to the head. Padawan police chief Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi said six suspects were apprehended at various locations between 4pm and 5.30pm the same day, just hours after the report was lodged. During the arrests, police also seized a pistol loaded with 10 bullets. — The Borneo Post
