Kuching Dragon Boat Club clinches silver, bronze at international race in Sabah

KUCHING (May 19): The Kuching Dragon Boat Club (KDB) made waves at the recently concluded 10th FCAS International Dragon Boat Race in Likas Bay, Sabah, clinching two silver and one bronze medals. KDB fielded a strong 32-member contingent across six race categories, competing against top-tier teams from across Malaysia and abroad during the competition held from May 16 to 18. The team secured silver medal in the 800m Mixed 20 Crew category, silver in the 800m Men's 20 Crew category, and bronze in the 200m Women's 12 Crew category. KDB president Lim Che Chien expressed immense pride in the team's performance in Sabah. 'I saw the sweat, the grit, and every shout of determination on the racecourse — and I was deeply moved. Our paddlers are fearless, committed, and united. That is the essence of dragon boating. 'This is a team that deserves to be seen, respected, and celebrated. KDB is more than just a sports team — we are cultural ambassadors and the pride of Kuching, Sarawak,' he said. The KDB team who won bronze in the 200m Women's 12 Crew. He noted that since March 1, KDB team members had trained six days a week, rain or shine, putting in the hard work to proudly represent Kuching on this international stage. He said KDB has been a regular contender at the Sabah race since 2015, except from 2019 to 2022. Notably, from 2016 to 2018, the team won three consecutive golds in the 800m 20 Crew Mixed category. 'Since its founding, KDB has operated as a non-profit club, with most expenses for both local and international competitions borne by the members themselves. 'Our goal has never been just to win medals, but to fly the Malaysian flag proudly and showcase the beauty of Sarawak to the world,' he said. Due to high costs and limited resources, he said KDB sincerely appeals to government agencies and private companies for support in promoting dragon boating. 'This is an empowering sport that uplifts youth and strengthens communities. 'Your donations, sponsorship, or material support could be the key to taking KDB to greater international heights,' he added. He revealed KDB will next compete in the Haikou International Dragon Boat Invitational in China from May 28 to June 3, participating in the 1000m 22-Crew International Open Race. Lim also extended an invitation to young people of all races and backgrounds to join the club's journey.
