Telegram founder warns France may label tech firms as criminal gangs

MOSCOW: Telegram founder Pavel Durov has raised concerns that French authorities could arbitrarily classify any technology company as a 'criminal gang' due to political motivations. His remarks followed accusations by Elon Musk's X platform, which claimed it was facing a politically driven criminal probe in France. X stated that the investigation jeopardizes user freedom of expression. Durov responded on the platform, saying, 'At this point, any tech company can be declared a 'criminal gang' in France.' He criticized the situation, adding, 'A decade of efforts to attract tech investment is being undone by a few bureaucrats advancing their careers and political agendas — at the expense of the French people.' The controversy stems from a recent investigation launched by the Paris prosecutor's office into X's alleged algorithm manipulation. The case has sparked debates over regulatory overreach and its impact on tech innovation in France. - Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti

Sabah Mineral Management Sdn Bhd denies misconduct by CEO

Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: FMT Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Mineral Management Sdn Bhd (SMM) has firmly denied allegations of misconduct involving its Chief Executive Officer, Natasha Sim, and Company Secretary, Emily Chong, following the circulation of a photo showing both women beside a private aircraft during an official visit abroad. The image, which has recently resurfaced online, was reportedly taken during an August 2024 working visit to Indonesia as part of an ongoing foreign direct investment (FDI) engagement. In a statement, SMM described the public and media speculation surrounding the image as 'false, misleading and defamatory.' The company clarified that the visit was part of a formal engagement process with a prospective foreign investor, initiated in March 2023 by then-CEO Jonih Enggihon. According to SMM, Enggihon had recommended collaboration with the Indonesian mining conglomerate after a due diligence visit and Board approval was granted in February 2024. Following the approval, Sim who was serving as Chief Strategy Officer at the time was appointed by the Board to lead discussions on the potential partnership. 'The August 2024 trip, during which the photo in question was taken, was one of several working visits related to the FDI process. 'Both Sim and Chong had voluntarily cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in December 2024, submitting detailed statements and documentation about the trip. 'An independent internal inquiry concluded in February 2025 found no evidence of wrongdoing, conflict of interest, or personal gain by any SMM officer involved. 'SMM is not a licensing authority, and our CEO has no power to approve or grant licenses,' the company noted. The company further alleged that the renewed attention may be politically motivated. It pointed to an ongoing legal suit filed by SMM against Enggihon and businessman Datuk Albert Tei, accusing them of fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, tampering with official documents, and conspiracy to injure the company. 'These allegations appear to recycle matters already under judicial scrutiny and could be part of a broader campaign to discredit SMM and its leadership,' the statement read. SMM urged the public, media, and political figures to verify facts before echoing unfounded claims. It also issued a warning that it would pursue legal action against any party disseminating defamatory or malicious falsehoods. 'We will not hesitate to take legal steps against individuals, media outlets, or public figures who continue to spread baseless accusations,' the company said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Trading Card Games Event II draws over 1,000

Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 Text Size: Abqaree (seated third left) with Chang (middle) and Ericson (left) and players at The TCG Event II. Kota Kinabalu: The second edition of The TCG Event drew over 1,000 participants from across Sabah over the weekend, highlighting the growing popularity of Trading Card Games (TCG) as a healthy, strategic, and social activity among youth. Sabah Youth Council President Abqaree Fawwaz Abekan, who officiated the closing ceremony at 1Borneo mall on Sunday, said such events are an effective platform to encourage Gen Z and Gen Alpha to connect in real life. 'Young people today have fewer chances for real-world interaction. Events like these encourage them to come out, meet peers, and engage in healthy two-way socialisation,' he said, adding that these activities help nurture both strategic thinking and communication skills. Abqaree urged continued government support and proposed the creation of a structured ecosystem to further grow the TCG community, potentially to the international level. 'Our youth need space, opportunity and platforms. With guidance and support, I believe they can go far,' he added. Organising Chairperson Chang Chee Ken said participation had surged compared to the inaugural edition. 'Last year we had eight card games and five hobby shops. This year, 12 card games were showcased with six stores involved. We had over 1,000 attendees across two days,' he said. One of the featured exhibitors, Ericson Lotidis, owner of R916 Hobby & Foods at Level 1, Megalong Mall Penampang, said the event not only boosted TCG-related sales but also demonstrated strong interest among local youth. 'There's clearly growing potential, especially among teens who are already playing or keen to start. I believe TCG can really thrive going forward,' he said. Ericson's shop, a popular hangout spot for young TCG players offers a variety of games including Magic: The Gathering, Cookie Run: Braverse, and Lorcana. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
