5 ‘Necessities' Frugal People Don't Buy, According to Frugal Living Expert Austin Williams

Inflation, rising housing costs and slow wage growth are among the reasons money has become tight for many Americans. Hence, finding items to cut from your budget is almost sure to help. If you've reviewed your budget and don't know where else to cut costs, consider taking inspiration from frugal people. Check Out: Learn More: In a YouTube video, frugal living expert Austin Williams discussed items typically considered 'necessities' that frugal people don't buy. Here are the top five that you may be able to reevaluate and eliminate from your spending, as well. Apple's latest iPhone 16 and 16 Plus start at $799 and $899, respectively. Other brands have similarly expensive smartphones available, though the average price is just under $300. It's tempting to buy the newest smartphones when they come out so you don't miss out on the attractive features your old phone doesn't have. However, if you're trying to save money, you should probably resist buying one. Williams recommended buying an older version for substantially less when you need to replace your phone. You can find great deals on resale sites like eBay, but make sure to vet any second-hand sellers carefully. Also, try to hold onto your phone for as long as possible to put off that purchase. Read Next: Many people consider bottled water a necessary purchase each time they visit the grocery store. After all, everyone needs to drink water to stay hydrated and healthy. However, if you have access to clean tap water, single-use bottled water is more of a luxury than a necessity. Bought individually, the average cost of a 16.9 fluid-ounce bottle of still water is around $1.60. Given that the average person drinks 167 bottles each year, that's over $250 per year spent on bottled water alone. Plastic water bottles are convenient, but that convenience is costly. Instead of picking up a case of water at the grocery store or buying single water bottles when you go out, consider investing in one reusable bottle. It may be more expensive upfront, but you'll soon save money by refilling your bottle with tap water. Williams said, 'You need water, but you don't need private water.' Stick to the very inexpensive or even free water coming out of your tap as long as it's safe to drink. When you're stressed or tired from working, the convenience of buying prepared food to eat is very tempting. Whether you're buying from your office cafeteria or a nearby restaurant, work lunches likely aren't cheap. And unfortunately, the price of those work lunches adds up quickly. If you spend just $15 daily on lunch, that's $75 per week or $3,750 over the whole year. Instead, pack a lunch at home if you work out of the house. Some people hesitate to pack lunches because they're short on time. One way to get around that is to meal prep and make several lunches at once. For example, on Sunday, you could make a large dish that you can eat all week at work. Planning and making your meals ahead of time will greatly reduce the temptation to buy expensive restaurant food, saving you money. Everyone is living in an age of unprecedented convenience and immediacy. With just a few clicks, you can find something you want, order it and have it arrive at your door within a few hours. It's easy to feel like convenience is a necessity when in reality, it's a luxury. Amazon Prime memberships are the perfect example. The annual Prime plan is currently $139, and is it really worth it? Most people are drawn to the free two-day shipping for Prime members, but you get fast free shipping on any Amazon order over $35 anyway. Nearly 75% of American adults take some dietary supplements, and the vast majority say they are essential to maintaining their health. These supplements may include multivitamins, minerals, amino acids or specific vitamins, among others. A bottle of supplements can cost anywhere from a few dollars to over $100. If that money is a meaningful investment in your health, it's not something to cut from your budget. However, as Williams pointed out, the 'scientific evidence of supplemental benefits is unclear.' If you eat a balanced diet and don't have any underlying health conditions, you may not need to buy supplements at all. Eliminating these recurring costs will save you lots of money in the long run. 25 Cheap And Helpful Target Items For Twentysomethings

A pair of tortoiseshell print blue light–blocking glasses, because if you, like many twentysomethings, spend a lot of time in front of screens every day, your tired peepers could probably use a break. These specs can help cut down on the amount of blue light you're exposed to, which in turn can help you sleep better and eliminate headaches caused by stressed-out eyeballs. Also, they're super cute. Promising review: 'Strained eye care! Between hunting for deals online, working, and studying, my eyeballs have been straineddd. Thought I'd give these cuties a try. They fit me well and come in a little pink too. Doesn't hurt my husband likes them on me too!' —Target CustomerPrice: $17 (available in four lens options) A spiral-bound undated planner, so you can stay on top of your busy twenties life — even if your phone runs out of juice. (That's the problem with digital calendars, is it not?) This cheerful pick from Tabitha Brown has tons of space for you to track everything from monthly and weekly to-dos to long-term goals. And since it's undated, you can start using it at any time — no need to wait until the beginning of next year to pick up the planning habit! Promising review: 'Cool colors in organizational state of mind! Love colors, the organization, the availability to write in your own dates. The spaces allowed for information or events.' —MsshopperPrice: $10 A tempered glass screen protector for your phone, because technology is expensive, y'all — especially if you're in your twenties and don't necessarily have a ton of disposable income. Spend a couple of bucks now to protect your device, and you'll avoid having to pay a much steeper price later, should tragedy strike at the hands of your own butterfingers. This one is designed for iPhone 15 Plus and 16 Plus models, but Target's Dealworthy line has options for plenty of other makes and models. And in case you need convincing that a screen protector is worth having in your twenties-ish life, here is a true story: I've had a tempered glass screen protector like this one on my Switch since I first got the thing. Last year, it took a tumble from the coffee table. It did not fall particularly far, and thanks to my carpet, it did not fall onto a particularly hard surface — but when I picked it back up, I had a brief moment of 'OH NO' panic when I saw the screen: It looked like it had cracked clear down the middle. But guess what? It was just the protector that had cracked. When I pried it off, the screen protector basically shattered — but the screen of the Switch itself was fine. No cracks. No scratches, my friends, is what a screen protector is for: Taking the damage so your actual device does not. And since most of us are on our phones pretty much constantly, just imagine how much wear and tear a screen protector can save on your most-used device!Promising review: 'WOW it works! I'll admit I hesitated to buy this because it's so affordable and I doubted the quality would be as strong. However, I dropped my iPhone 16 Plus on the road and it's still intact with no scratches! Wow, buy this!' —oliviamichellePrice: $9.99 A bottle of E.l.f.'s Holy Hydration! Hydro-Gel Moisturizer, because if you aren't already moisturizing on the regular, your twenties are the time to start. This soothing gel formula is powered by hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptides — but it's still lightweight, and particularly good if your skin tends towards the sensitive side of things. Promising review: ''Holy' is the correct word! I have extremely sensitive skin that immediately rejects any product it does not agree with. I was hesitant at first, but was on a budget and needed hydration ASAP. I came across this and wow! I do not regret. My skin loved it and helped with the weather change that caused my dry skin. I would totally recommend!!' —StinkyPicklesPrice: $13 And some of Cetaphil's 50 SPF facial sunscreen, so you can make sure you lock in the daily sunscreen habit sooner, rather than later. This pick from Cetaphil ticks all the boxes: It's highly effective, it's good for sensitive skin, it's waterproof, it layers well under makeup, and — key point! — it's shockingly affordable. Promising review: 'Amazing sunscreen! Wow!! This mineral sunscreen is amazing!! I struggle with allergies, sensitivity, and am acne-prone. Some sunscreens in the past have given me rashes where I applied them. This sunscreen works well for me, protecting my face with a high SPF and no breakouts. Sometimes I wear it without any makeup and it blurs my imperfections really well, also works great under makeup. Also love that it is mineral and reef-safe.' —Makeupgal95Price: $12.59 A good household tool kit, so you can DIY some of your own fix-it needs, you big ol' competent adult, you. This 40-piece set packs everything you need to handle tons of common household tasks — and at this price, it is a STEAL. A steal, I tell you! Included are a tape measurer, a claw hammer, pliers, a bunch of hex keys, a ratchet screwdriver with a ton of bits, scissors, a utility knife, some precision screwdrivers, a magnetic bit holder, and a case to keep it all review: 'Necessity for people who move. I bought this because I moved out of my parent's house and needed a little tool case. It has the basic tools that I need for my new house and it comes in handy for hanging up my decorations.' —Alexis JPrice: $21.99 Some reusable wool dryer balls that are way easier on your clothes than dryer sheets — and easier on your person-in-your-20s budget, too. Throwing these soft little spheres into the dryer with your clothes will soften them up, remove odors, reduce wrinkling, cut down on static, and even shorten drying time. What's not to love? I got myself this exact set of dryer balls — just as a lil' experiment — and friends, I am pleased to report that they do, in fact, help clothes and linens dry better! I try to avoid using my dryer's highest heat level since that can wreak havoc on textiles of all types, but when I tumble-dry on medium, things sometimes still come out a little... damp on the other end. Not with these puppies, though! Even my super plush bath towels come out fully dry without the need for high heat! It's a laundry miracle!Promising review: 'Great product! Just bought a second set. I bought my first set of the same brand about 10 years ago. Have not used dryer sheets since. Clothes dry faster, no static cling. They have lasted well for the past 10 years with frequent use. Also love that it comes in a cardboard box. No plastic packaging — yeah!' —CCL5Price: $9.99 for a three-pack And some mesh wash bags, because you've got better things to do with your fledgling adult life than worry about your workout gear or favorite bra every time you run the washing machine. This set of three bags from Brightroom gives you everything you need to make sure delicate items, both big and small, stay safe in the laundry. Promising review: 'Best purchase ever! I LOVE these laundry bags!!! I was looking for something to wash bras and delicates in when I came across these. I was skeptical because the price was so cheap, but decided to give them a try anyway. I'm so glad I did!!!! They have held up well after several uses. I use them to wash bras and keep the clasps from snagging other garments, and it's great. I also use them to wash my decorative pillow covers to keep the zippers from tearing the material and these garment bags have been AmAzInG!!! Do yourself a favor and get them now!!!' —GigiPrice: $4 AND a bottle of Downy's beloved Wrinkle Releaser spray, because nothing helps you look like you have your twenties together like a wrinkle-free wardrobe. A spritz of this stuff and a tug on the fabric to straighten everything out will go a long, long way toward making you presentable in no time flat. Promising review: 'Helps me get out the door quickly! This stuff has saved me! I don't have time to iron in the morning, so a few spritzes and smoothing out the fabric by hand does the trick. It smells great and dries quickly.' —AngelaPrice: $9.29 A sunrise alarm clock to help out if your mornings as a person in your twenties can sometimes be... let's call it a little rough. You probably already know the gimmick behind these kinds of clocks — they start to grow brighter a few minutes before your actual get-out-of-bed time, so you can wake up gradually instead of all at once — and this particular one offers a wonderfully budget-minded way to give the whole thing a shot. Promising review: 'Great clock and night light! I use this as my alarm clock. The light feature that turns on 15 minutes prior to my set alarm time is wonderful! It slowly gets brighter and I am always awake before the alarm sounds. It's nice to not wake up the whole house. The night light feature options are very pretty and nice to have just before going to sleep.' —JBPrice: $30 A classy 12-piece stoneware dinnerware set, so you can cultivate your twentysomething skills as an excellent dinner party host without needing to bust out the paper plates or go bankrupt. This set includes service for four at a truly unbeatable price point — and naturally, the pieces are all dishwasher- and microwave safe for easy cleanup and easier reheating. (Those leftovers aren't going to eat themselves.) The set comprises four bowls, four salad plates, and four dinner review: 'Amazing! I get compliments on these all the time. Definitely looks like a more expensive dish set. Doesn't scratch or mark easily. I have them in the white color and I love them.' —ShanananaPrice: $25 (available in three colors) An insulated lunch bag that doesn't look like a lunch bag, so you can pack yourself the best meals of your life every single day and still be taken ~seriously~ at work or while you're commuting. (Yes, even if people routinely mistake your twentysomething self for someone much younger.) You deserve better than a Sad Desk Lunch. This zipper-top tote even includes a two-cup, BPA free, microwave-, freezer-, and dishwasher-safe lunch review: 'I love that it is lightweight, has just the right length handle, and is attractive like a purse. You easily fit lunch and snacks in this lunch bag.' —Cathy RPrice: $16.99 (originally $19.99) A 10-piece set of bamboo and silicone cooking tools that'll make sure you always have exactly what you need on hand when you embark on your next culinary adventure — even if it's 10 p.m. on a weeknight and you've just been seized by the sudden and irrepressible desire for fresh-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookies. (You're a twentysomething, not a monster. It's always a good time for cookies.) This set from Target's no-frills-but-super-useful Room Essentials line includes a good ol' fashioned wooden spoon, a serving spoon with little tines on the end, a slotted spoon, a turner, a slotted turner, a spoonula (love a good spoonula!), and three — count 'em! — spatulas. That is a ton of stuff at this price point, especially given the quality of the materials they're made review: 'Great quality and value! Bought for my daughter's college apartment and the quality was great, so I bought for home too! Really well made, both the wooden and silicon materials are high quality.' —BeTheChangePrice: $10 And a set of food storage containers that are actually good, because your 20-and-up self and your lunch both deserve better than old, stained takeout containers. Made of durable, BPA-free Tritan material, these Rubbermaid containers seal shut super securely, keeping all your leftovers and prepped ingredients fresh. This 10-piece set includes five containers — two 1.3-cup ones, two 3.2-cup ones, and one 9.6-cup one — plus lids for all of review: 'Tight seal keeps food fresh longer!!! Keeps food fresh longer than any other container I've tried. Finally found one that works! Tight seal is amazing. Great quality for price!' —AdamePrice: $26.99 A bottle of non-fuss daily shower cleaner, so you don't have to waste your valuable twentysomething time endlessly scrubbing your bathroom. To keep things fresh between your occasional cleaning sprees, just spritz some of this lemon-and-mint-scented spray in the tub or on your shower walls and floors when you're done washing up each day, and then just… walk away. Yes, really. Promising review: Great for daily use! I purchased this on a whim, as I've used the other cleaning sprays in the past. This has a great smell and is great for quick cleanings in between the deeper cleanings of the bathroom. We use it every time we shower and I deep clean weekly. The scent is great and not overpowering. It does not leave a residue either. The value is great and cheaper than a lot of other shower sprays.' —DkirkPrice: $2.99 And a Scrubbing Bubbles gel stamp to keep your commode in tip-top condition when you've, uh, not had the energy to give it a proper clean in a while. (Your twenties can be exhausting, friends.) Once you stamp this wand inside the bowl, it'll fight toilet ring and limescale with each flush for up to 12 days. Not to mention the fact that your bathroom will be way less stinky on the daily! Promising review: 'I mean does anyone like cleaning the bathroom?! I don't, but I definitely love using this little gadget once I'm done. I love that it makes the toilet smell clean and look sparkly after a couple of days.' —TargetfangirlPrice: $4.59+ (available with six or 24 stamps) AND a bottle of Dr. Bronner's Castile liquid soap, because it is truly the best secret weapon your twentysomething cleaning arsenal can have. Personally, I'm a big fan of using it to clean my makeup brushes, but it's endlessly versatile — and since the bottle is HUGE, it'll last... well, maybe not forever, but for quite some time, at least! It also comes in a ton of different varieties — lavender! Almond! Citrus! Peppermint! And more! — but this particular version is unscented, making it perfect for those who are sensitive to fragrance or other reviews: 'Don't hesitate! One of the best soaps to ever be invented!! You can use this for mostly anything. It is super nice for people that are sensitive to soap or smell. Super clean ingredients and the price is worth the pay since it lasts so long. I personally use this soap to clean my ears with earrings. Love!' —Kaitlyn D'Great for tech fabric! We use this to wash all our tech fabric gym gear, and to wash polar fleece items. A little goes a very long way. Unscented and great for allergies.' —XenaPrice: $18.39 A 36-pack of E.l.f. Instantly made my desk look better with two and easier to organize.' —Jeaners18Price: $10 per 13'x13' cube (available in 13 colors and patterns) A pair of extremely effective yet shockingly budget-friendly wireless earbuds, because good tech accessories actually don't need to cost a proverbial arm and a leg. These babies deliver excellent sound quality and hold a charge for hours, making them as good for taking Zoom meetings as they are for keeping you occupied during your morning run — and all at an under-$25 price point. A truly surprising number of reviewers have also all attested to the fact that these things are so durable, they can survive accidental trips not only through the washing machine, but ALSO the dryer — and still come out working perfectly on the other review: 'Hands down, best earbuds I've ever had! These are the best earbuds I've purchased. They're loud, clear, and comfortable. I love that they come with a C charger instead of the old USB chargers. I love them so much I'm going to get more to gift at Christmas.' —WhiteWitch7Price: $24.99 (available in eight colors) Or just some good ol' fashioned earplugs, because if you're in your 20s, you probably have at least one roommate, and if you have at least one roommate, you probably need to be able to just… not hear them for a while every now and again. They're not fancy, but these lil' foam earplugs will make it a lot easier to sleep if you share a living space with someone who tends to be… less than considerate at times. Friends, I started sleeping with foam earplugs during my many years of twentysomething shared apartment living, because honestly, some of those roommates were just SO. LOUD. They were loud pretty much all the time, but they were especially loud late at night — and given that I have never been a terribly sound sleeper even at the best of times, it was often… let's call it a challenging situation. Starting to keep a steady supply of earplugs like these available made it a lot easier to cope with, though — so much so that even now, many, many years later, I still sleep with them. There's something very soothing about drifting off in a little cocoon of review: 'Best I've tried! I've tried a lot of earplugs and these are the most comfortable when sleeping. They are also very budget-friendly, so I can use a new pair each week without worrying about costs.' —KMMPrice: $4.49 for a pack of 12 pairs A pack of Command picture hanging strips, so you can decorate your blank, empty walls with whatever art you like — and then switch it up again whenever the mood strikes. These things work just like regular Command strips, except that they're designed specifically for frames and decorative wall hangings. That means they're easy to install (no tools needed!) and remove without a trace. If you're in your twenties, you're probably going to move house not infrequently, which makes these an essential décor tool: They let you personalize your space, then leave it exactly the way you found it when it's time to move review: 'Great for hanging, then removal. I'm constantly changing my walls and décor — these are a must! Easy to install, even easier to remove. Plus, they hold up very well. Love Command strips!' —SerboPrice: $10.99 (originally $13.99) An unexpectedly beautiful pegboard set that'll pull double duty as an organizational tool for your busy twentysomething life and a piece of eye-catching décor for your snazzy twentysomething home or office. Promising review: 'Perfect wall organizer! I had been looking for something for our kitchen wall that was a catchall place for mail, keys, important school papers etc. This checked all the boxes for us! Love the green color with gold accents and mix of the modern/rustic/industrial look.' —StrawberrymonarchPrice: $11.99+ (originally $19.99+; available in two sizes) And lastly, a 'hyperchiller' gadget from Keurig that'll turn hot coffee into iced coffee in a mere 60 seconds. It is a game-changer for any highly caffeinated twentysomething. Game. Changer. No more emergency coffee shop runs for you! By now, your 20s-ish self probably has a coffee maker of your own, if you are of the caffeinated persuasion. But sometimes, you don't want hot coffee. You want iced coffee. And, much like Veruca Salt, you want it now. And with this doohickey, you can make that happen, even if you did not have the foresight to brew up some coffee last night and stick it in the fridge for later! Just stash the hyperchiller in the freezer, then pull it out and either a) pour your freshly brewed hot coffee into it, or b) put it in your actual Keurig machine where you'd usually put your cup and brew the coffee directly into it. Within about a minute, the hyperchiller will have turned your hot coffee into a cool, cold treat. Iced coffee lovers of the world, review: 'Iced fast! Amazing for iced coffee! If you are a coffee enthusiast, and you don't own this, I'm asking myself why! It's so easy to use and fast to chill.' —kimann115Price: $18.79

Carphone Warehouse is selling the latest iPhone with FREE Beats earbuds for £28p/m

SHOPPERS hunting for a new smartphone - and some earbuds to go with it - should head to Carphone Warehouse. The iPhone 16e, Apple's latest budget-friendly handset, is now available with a free pair of Beats Solo Buds. Apple iPhone 16e with FREE Beats Solo Buds: From £26.99p/m The iPhone 16e, which launched back in February, is Apple's latest effort to provide a more affordable option for those who don't want to shell out for its flagship models. Of course, like most things Apple, 'affordable' is a relative term, with the device starting at £599 - but in comparison to the standard iPhone 16 and its bigger siblings, the 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, it's a lot cheaper. Apple has made notable upgrades, too, when you compare it against the last budget-friendly handset, the 3rd-generation SE which came out in 2022. The Home button is gone, replaced by a sleek 6.1-inch OLED screen, and Face ID now replaces Touch ID. Apple has also switched to USB-C charging, so you can use the same cable for your phone, tablet, and other devices. The camera is upgraded too: though it has just one rear lens, it doubles as a telephoto with 2x zoom, perfect for portraits or zooming in without losing quality. Video capabilities shine with 4K Dolby Vision at 60fps, ideal for capturing high-quality footage. Battery life is another win, with up to 26 hours of video playback, easily lasting a full day or even two. And of course, there's that deal-sweetener: Carphone Warehouse is throwing in a free pair of Beats Solo Buds when you pick up the iPhone 16e on a pay-monthly plan. The Solo Buds are a straightforward and reliable set of earbuds that don't include premium features like noise cancellation but still deliver excellent sound quality. They're currently available for separately on Amazon for £79.99. These big-brand buds offer up to 18 hours of battery life, and with the quick-charge feature, you can get an hour of playback from just a 5-minute charge. They're also compatible with both iPhones and Android devices, so you won't have to worry about switching ecosystems if you ever decide to change your phone in the future. Carphone Warehouse iPhone 16e deals If you're in the market for a new phone and like the idea of getting a free pair of decent earbuds, this might be the perfect time to make the switch.
