BCCI To SACK Morne Morkel, Ryan Ten Doeschate; Gautam Gambhir To Continue: Report

Last Updated: BCCI is reportedly planning to SACK Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate after the 2025 Asia Cup, while Gautam Gambhir is likely to continue. India's struggles in the ongoing 2024-25 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy have reportedly put bowling coach Morne Morkel and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate's role in the cricket board's firing line. According to The Telegraph, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is 'hell-bent' on letting go of both of them after the 2025 Asia Cup and before India's next Test series against the West Indies in October. The report said the BCCI's call would be independent of India's performance in the remaining two Tests (the fourth, at Old Trafford, was underway at the time of writing) in the series. The BCCI is said to believe that Morkel hasn't help improve any bowler in the team, while also scrutinising the 'exact function' of Doeschate, who stood in as coach when Gambhir went home briefly before the series. Head coach Gautam Gambhir asked for South African Morkel and Dutch ten Doeschate to be included in his support staff when he was appointed last year, alongside Mumbai's Abhishek Nayar. Gambhir had worked with Morkel at Lucknow Super Giants and Nayar and ten Doeschate at Kolkata Knight Riders. Nayar, designated as an assistant coach, was let go in the aftermath of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year. Before the conclusion of the Old Trafford Test, the coaching team had won four of 13 Tests. The report added that the BCCI is ready to give Gambhir a longer rope to avoid a bigger change at the helm for a team in transition. It further said chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and East's representative Shiv Sundar Das, who are with the team in England, are also under the BCCI's cross-hairs. Kuldeep Yadav case a big issue The report claimed that there has been a 'difference in opinion' between the decision makers over some team selections, with spinner Kuldeep Yadav's absence being on top of the list. Considered a match-winner, Kuldeep hasn't played a single Test in the series so far, with the management prefering batting depth and all-rounders. 'The coaches always talk of balance but keeping a world-class wrist spinner like Kuldeep Yadav out has had disastrous consequences," the report cited a source as saying. view comments First Published: July 27, 2025, 20:55 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Jasprit Bumrah Opts Out Of India Test Captaincy Race: Report

Last Updated: Bumrah was India's vice-captain in the last two Test series. In Rohit's absence he also led the side in the first and fifth Tests of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who led the Indian men's cricket team in the first as well as the fifth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has opted out of India's Test captaincy race. After Rohit Sharma's retirement on May 7 via an Instagram post, India are in search of a new Test captain. Bumrah was Rohit's deputy in the last two Test series played against New Zealand at home and Australia away, but according to a report in Sky Sports News, 'Jasprit Bumrah has opted out of being India's next Test captain, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant now the front runners." Jasprit Bumrah has opted out of being India's next Test captain, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant now the front runners, Sky Sports News understands 🚨 — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) May 11, 2025 It has been reported by various India media outlets as well in recent days that Gill will succeed Rohit as captain in the traditional format of the game, and wicketkeeper-batter Pant will be his deputy. Both Gill and Pant have never captained the Indian Test team in the past, but they have led India's T20I team in one five-match series each. While Pant made his India captaincy debut in June 2022 against South Africa at home, Gill led the Men in Blue in a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe last year in July. Gill was India's vice-captain in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which the Rohit-led side won by getting the better of New Zealand in the final played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on March 9. Bumrah, who has expressed his desire to become Indian captain on multiple occasions in the past, made his Test captaincy debut on July 1, 2022, against England during the rescheduled Test played at Edgbaston in Birmingham. In that match he hammered 35 runs in one over bowled by Stuart Broad to create the new world record but failed to help the Indian team avoid defeat. Overall, Bumrah has captained India in three Tests and won one of them (in Perth vs Australia in November 2024), whereas on two occasions (England in 2022, Australia in 2025), India suffered a defeat. The 31-year-old cricketer from Ahmedabad, who won the ICC Cricketer of the Year and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year awards in 2024, has also led the Indian team in two T20Is (vs Ireland in August 2023) and served as Rohit's deputy in the second half of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
