BCCI To SACK Morne Morkel, Ryan Ten Doeschate; Gautam Gambhir To Continue: Report

BCCI is reportedly planning to SACK Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate after the 2025 Asia Cup, while Gautam Gambhir is likely to continue.
India's struggles in the ongoing 2024-25 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy have reportedly put bowling coach Morne Morkel and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate's role in the cricket board's firing line.
According to The Telegraph, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is 'hell-bent' on letting go of both of them after the 2025 Asia Cup and before India's next Test series against the West Indies in October. The report said the BCCI's call would be independent of India's performance in the remaining two Tests (the fourth, at Old Trafford, was underway at the time of writing) in the series.
The BCCI is said to believe that Morkel hasn't help improve any bowler in the team, while also scrutinising the 'exact function' of Doeschate, who stood in as coach when Gambhir went home briefly before the series.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir asked for South African Morkel and Dutch ten Doeschate to be included in his support staff when he was appointed last year, alongside Mumbai's Abhishek Nayar. Gambhir had worked with Morkel at Lucknow Super Giants and Nayar and ten Doeschate at Kolkata Knight Riders. Nayar, designated as an assistant coach, was let go in the aftermath of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year.
Before the conclusion of the Old Trafford Test, the coaching team had won four of 13 Tests. The report added that the BCCI is ready to give Gambhir a longer rope to avoid a bigger change at the helm for a team in transition. It further said chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and East's representative Shiv Sundar Das, who are with the team in England, are also under the BCCI's cross-hairs.
Kuldeep Yadav case a big issue
The report claimed that there has been a 'difference in opinion' between the decision makers over some team selections, with spinner Kuldeep Yadav's absence being on top of the list. Considered a match-winner, Kuldeep hasn't played a single Test in the series so far, with the management prefering batting depth and all-rounders.
'The coaches always talk of balance but keeping a world-class wrist spinner like Kuldeep Yadav out has had disastrous consequences," the report cited a source as saying.

Rishabh Pant Ruled Out Of India-England Test Series, Confirms Head Coach Gambhir

Last Updated: Rishabh Pant has been officially ruled out of the India-England Test series, head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed after the Manchester Test. Head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed on Sunday (July 27) that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the remainder of the India-England Test series. Pant suffered a metatarsal fracture after being hit on the foot by a Chris Woakes yorker while batting on the first day of the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test. He was taken to the hospital and was reportedly advised six weeks of rest, though he came out to bat on the second day and scored 16 runs too. The Test ended in a draw, thanks to valiant centuries from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, who helped India overcome the 311-run first innings lead, forcing the hosts to accept a draw an hour before Stumps on Day 5. 'Rishabh is already out of the series," Gambhir said in the post-match press conference. 'I want to say that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on something that Rishabh Pant did for the team and for the country as well. Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially batting with a broken foot. Not many people have done that in the past, and he put his hand up, and that is why I say any amount of praise, I can sit here and talk about this for hours and hours. I think the generations to come forward will talk about this, and the generations coming forward should talk about it," he added. IND vs ENG: BCCI shares Rishabh Pant injury update, here's the updated squad for the Oval Test

India's Rishabh Pant walks off the field after losing his wicket during the second day of the fourth cricket test match between England and India at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, England, Thursday, July 24, 2025. (AP Photo/Jon Super) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday shared an update on Rishabh Pant and also revealed the squad for the fifth and final Test between England and India, scheduled to be played at The Oval. "Rishabh Pant, who sustained a fracture to his right foot during the fourth Test against England in Manchester, has been ruled out of the fifth and final Test of the series," the BCCI said in a statement. Tamil Nadu batter Narayan Jagadeesan has been announced as Pant's replacement. "The Men's Selection Committee has named Narayan Jagadeesan as the replacement for Rishabh Pant for the fifth Test, which begins on July 31, 2025, at Kennington Oval, London." India coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed Pant's injury for the first time after the visitors salvaged a draw in the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Sunday. Pant retired hurt on Day 1 when he was taken off the field on a cart with his foot badly swollen, but he returned—limping—on Day 2 to reach a half-century. Gautam Gambhir fiery press conference: Slams critics, big update on Jasprit Bumrah, Karun vs Sai 'It's been declared that he's out of the series, and one thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on something Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well,' Gambhir said. 'Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially for batting with a broken foot. 'I think the generations to come will talk about it, and the generations coming forward should talk about it.' Pant was injured while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes, and the ball deflected onto his right ankle and foot. India did not confirm the extent of the injury at the time, but he was replaced as wicketkeeper by Dhruv Jurel for the remainder of the match. First Time In 91 Years! 4 Indian Batters Have Scored More Than...

Last Updated: Four batters—KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja—have scored more than 400 runs for India in the ongoing series against England. Ravindra Jadeja scored 107 runs from 185 balls for India in the second innings of the fourth Test against England. In the match that ended in a draw on Sunday (July 27), Jadeja came out to bat at No. 6 and hammered 13 fours and 1 six during his stay at the crease. He added an unbeaten 203 runs for the fifth wicket with Washington Sundar (101*) to help India avoid defeat at Old Trafford despite conceding a lead of 311 runs in the first innings. During his 107-run knock, when Jadeja reached the 53-run mark, he completed 400 runs in the ongoing series. Team India played its first-ever Test match in June 1932 against England at The Lord's but their first-ever Test series was played in 1933-34 at home against the English team. In that series (3-match assignment), Lala Amarnath finished as the top run getter for India. In six innings of three matches, he amassed a total of 203 runs. Gill is India's leading run getter in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. With the help of one double century and three half-centuries, he has amassed a total of 722 runs so far. Rahul has 511 runs to his name, whereas Pant has scored 479 runs in seven innings. Pant will, however, not take part in the fifth Test due to a foot injury that he suffered on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. Had Pant played in the fifth and final Test at The Oval from July 31 to August 4, he would have gotten a chance to break the record of scoring the most runs by a wicketkeeper-batter in a Test series for India. As of now the record is in the name of Budhi Kunderan. Kunderan amassed a total of 525 runs for India in the home series against England in 1965. Gill will, however, have a chance to break the record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India at The Oval. As of now, the record is in the name of Sunil Gavaskar, who amassed a total of 774 runs in four matches for the Ajit Wadekar-led side against the West Indies in 1971. Gill needs to score 53 more runs to go past that tally. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 00:08 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
