Root hits his 38th Test ton, 13 hundreds away from Tendulkar's record of 51
Root has equalled Sangakkara's record for most career Test centuries to place himself joint fourth in the all-time list Aditya Kaushik New Delhi Former England skipper Joe Root continues to enjoy a record-breaking run in the fourth Test of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against India in Manchester. Batting on Day 3 of the Test during England's first innings, Root began the day by surpassing Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis in the all-time list of top Test run-scorers, moving into the number three spot behind only Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting. But the Englishman did not stop there—he converted his strong start into a magnificent century to hand England complete control of the match. This is Root's 38th career Test hundred, taking him level with Kumar Sangakkara in the all-time list of most career Test hundreds at joint fourth. He now needs three more Test hundreds to equal third-placed Ricky Ponting (41 centuries), seven more to match Jacques Kallis (45 centuries), and 13 more to equal Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar's mammoth record of 51 Test centuries. ENG vs IND 4th Test: IND bowlers helpless as Root-Pope dominate 1st session
It was all England in the morning session of Day 3 action of the 4th Test of 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England in Manchester, as the hosts played a brilliant wicketless session to take their total from the overnight score of 225 for 2 to 332 for 2. The hosts are now only 26 runs away from India's first innings total of 358. Indian bowlers started the day in aggressive fashion but soon lost their morale and rhythm, which the English duo of Pope and Root took full advantage of. The first session of the day began with England resuming their innings at the overnight score of 225 for 2, with Joe Root (11 not out) and Ollie Pope (20 not out) at the crease. The duo took a cautious start to the day and kept playing sensible cricket to take their partnership for the third wicket past 50, keeping England rolling. India had two good wicket chances — one when Pope edged a ball to short cover, but it fell in no man's land, and the second when, in a rare scenario, Jadeja fumbled a throw and missed a chance to run out Root on the final ball of the 54th over. Just before the first drinks break of the day, Root took his total to 31 to become the third-highest run-scorer in Test cricket history, surpassing Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis. The Englishmen continued to attack post drinks as well. Ollie Pope, in the 64th over, completed his 16th Test half-century to make it three out of three 50-plus scores by England's top three in the innings, before Root made it four out of four in the 69th over. By the time the session ended, Joe Root (58 not out) and Ollie Pope (66 not out) had added 107 runs to the hosts' overnight total to complete a dominant session. Root climbs to number three in all-time career Test runs; check full list
The 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England has been a one-of-its-kind series so far, with new records being made in almost every innings. The latest player to enter this list is none other than former England captain Joe Root. Root, who already held the record for being England's highest run-getter in Test cricket—surpassing Alastair Cook earlier this year—has now improved his position in the all-time run-scorers list and is ranked number three. Root started the match at the number five spot with a total of 13,259 runs to his name. He needed 30 runs to surpass former India skipper Rahul Dravid at number four, and 31 runs to go past South African legend Jacques Kallis at number three. On the third day of the fourth Test in Manchester, Root crossed the 31-run mark in the 58th over of England's first innings with a single, taking his tally to 13,290 runs and making him the third-highest run-getter of all time in Test cricket. The Englishman will have the chance to improve his position by at least one more spot in the series itself. With three innings left to play, he needs only 89 more runs to go past former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting, who has 13,378 career Test runs to his name. However, Root still has a long way to go if he wants to become the all-time highest scorer, as he is still 2,631 runs away from the top spot held by India legend Sachin Tendulkar, who has 15,921 Test runs to his name. England vs India LIVE SCORE UPDATES 4th Test Day 3: Root-Pope keep ENG steady with senisible strokes
The Day 3 of the 4th Test of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy is underway in Manchester today with all eyes on the Indian bowlers, who have the tall task of stopping England from taking the first innings lead cut out for them. At the end of play on Day 2, England had already put up 255 runs on the scoreboard with the loss of just two wickets, trailing by only 133 runs in the innings. The pitch at Old Trafford seems to favour batters as the sessions progress, and the hosts will fancy their chances of taking a big first innings lead and batting India out of the game early. However, Indian skipper Gill knows that on many occasions in the series, a team has been just one or two wickets away from a collapse. He will hope his bowlers deliver just that, as a couple of wickets in the first hour of play can clearly shift the momentum in India's favour. Root nears historic milestone One of the biggest talking points for Day 3 will be whether Root can add 20 more runs to his overnight tally of 11. If the former English skipper manages to do that, he will surpass Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis on the all-time Test run-scorers list, placing himself at the number three spot with 12,290 runs. Pant stole the spotlight on Day 2 Despite English batters dominating the show on Day 2 — with openers Zak Crawley (84) and Ben Duckett (94) making life miserable for the Indian bowlers through a 166-run opening stand before Ollie Pope (20 not out) and Joe Root (11 not out) ended the day on a high for the hosts — it was actually Indian vice-captain Rishabh Pant who was the talk of the town. Pant, who fractured his foot on Day 1, came out to bat despite the injury and scored a magnificent 54, powering India to 358 runs before being bundled out in the first innings. Rishabh Pant Becomes First Wicketkeeper-Batter In 141 Years To...
In seven innings of four matches played so far in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Rishabh Pant has amassed a total of 479 runs for India. Rishabh Pant, despite suffering a foot injury on Wednesday (July 23), which will reportedly keep him out of action for six weeks, came out to bat for India in the first innings of the ongoing fourth Test against England in Manchester and scored 54 runs from 75 balls. During his stay at the crease, he hammered three fours and two sixes and broke multiple batting records. The 54-run knock in the first innings helped Pant take his tally of runs to 479 in the ongoing series. The total of 479 runs is the most by any wicketkeeper-batter in a Test series played on English soil. The previous best was 464 runs by Alec Stewart of England during the 1998 England-South Africa Test series. Most Test runs in a series by a WK in England 479* – Rishabh Pant vs ENG, 2025 464 – Alec Stewart vs SA, 1998 415* – Jamie Smith vs IND, 2025 387 – Jonny Bairstow vs SL, 2016 Apart from that, Pant also broke the Indian record of scoring the most 50+ scores in a Test series by a wicketkeeper-batter. During his playing days, MS Dhoni twice scored four 50+ scores in a series, and Farokh Engineer, who also has a stand named after him at Old Trafford, also crossed the 50-run mark four times during the 1972-73 India-England Test series. 5 – Rishabh Pant vs England, 2025* 4 – Farokh Engineer vs England, 1972/73 4 – MS Dhoni vs Australia, 2008/09 4 – MS Dhoni vs England, 2014 Pant has nine 50+ scores to his credit in red-ball matches played on English soil now which is one more than Dhoni's tally of 8. In addition to breaking three big records as a wicketkeeper-batter, Pant also entered his name in the record books by becoming India's leading run getter in the World Test Championship (WTC). During his playing days, Rohit featured in 40 WTC matches for India and amassed a total of 2716 runs, whereas Pant has 2731 runs to his credit now in 38 WTC matches. The couple of sixes during his 75-ball stay at the crease in the first innings has taken Pant's tally of maximums to 90 in Test cricket, which helps him equal Virender Sehwag's record of most sixes for India in Tests. Sehwag played 103 Tests for India from 2001 to 2013 and hammered 90 maximums. Get latest Cricket news, live score and match results on News18.
