Filipinos call on elected officials to fulfill campaign promises
Filipinos are calling on the over 18,000 elected officials who are set to officially assume their posts on Monday, June 30, 2025, to fulfill the promises they made while campaigning earlier this year.
According to University of the Philippines National College of Public Administrative and Governance (UP NCPAG) professor and former dean Maria Fe Mendoza, the public should take government officials into account.
'The 31% youth vote parang spelled the difference. May pag-asa pala tayo, kasi surprise 'yun, diba, at 'yun nga, despite the surveys before the elections, ang napunta sa magic five ay 'yung mga hindi natin inaasahan,' she said in a report by Raffy Tima on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday.
(We have hope, because it was a surprise that despite the surveys before the elections, those who entered the magic five are those we did not expect.)
The top five senators in the May elections were Senators Christopher 'Bong' Go, Paolo Benigno 'Bam' Aquino, Ronald 'Bato' dela Rosa, Erwin Tulfo, and Francis Pangilinan.
Aquino and Pangilinan had been outside the top five or even top 12 in the polls that were taken leading up to the election.
There are 18,255 officials set to take office on Monday, majority of whom are set to have a three-year term save for the 12 senators who will serve for the next six years.
This is 155 more than those elected in the previous polls, given the establishment of a new province and eight new municipalities.
GMA Integrated News asked voters what they expect from the officials:
'Kung ano 'yung nagawa nung nakaraan, previous na nakaupo, kung maganda na 'yung ginagawa niya, dapat lamangan niya para ang mga tao, okay ang kabuhayan,' said one man.
(What was done by the previous administration, if it was good, the next administration should surpass that so that livelihood would be okay).
'Gawin nila 'yung best nila tsaka 'yung sa plataporma nila, 'yung magagandang mga plano nila eh gawin nila ngayon, tuparin nila ngayon,' said a client at a barbershop.
(They should do their best and their platforms, the good plans they have, they should fulfill that now.)
''Yung mga pangako nila, dapat tuparin nila 'yun. Kung hindi naman natupad eh para saan pa po 'yung pag-e-elect nila?' the barber said.
(They should fulfill their promises. If not, what were they elected for?)
''Wag puro pangako kasi 'pag sa kampanya malakas sila, pinapasok nila 'yung mga eskinita, pero 'pag nanalo na, hindi nila mabisita kung sino 'yung mga nasa laylayan ng lipunan,' said another man.
(They shouldn't be full of promises because during the campaign, they would reach even the alleys but when they win, they cannot even visit those in the margins.)
'Inaasahan ko sana magkaroon ng trabaho 'yung mga nahihirapang maghanap ng trabaho, lalo na 'yung mga katulad ko na 21 years old, tsaka 'yung ano rin po, 'yung pagbaba ng presyo ng bilihin,' said a street vendor.

Six OFWs from Iran arrive safely in PH
Six overseas Filipino workers (OFW) repatriated from Iran amid its conflict with Israel arrived safely in the Philippines on Saturday morning, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said. The OFWs — five who worked as shrimp hatchery technicians in Iran and one domestic worker from Dubai who accompanied her employer to Iran as a tourist — arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City. Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan, Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, and DMW Assistant Secretary Venecio Legaspi welcomed the OFWs. The repatriated workers were also met by the MIA Medical Team as well as a social welfare officer of the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The OFWs boarded an Emirates flight to Manila. "The repatriation was made possible through the efforts of the Philippine Embassy in Tehran, led by Ambassador Roberto Manalo, in close coordination with the DMW and OWWA," the DMW said. The repatriated OFWs were given financial assistance by the DMW, OWWA, and DSWD. The MIA Medical Team also provided them with food and medical services. The OWWA will give the OFWs temporary hotel accommodations and domestic flights back to their home provinces. The DMW said two more OFWs from Iran are expected to arrive on Saturday night. "This group marks the first batch of Filipinos repatriated from Iran following the June 13 Israel-Iran conflict," the DMW said. President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Monday tasked government offices to take the necessary steps to ensure the safe and orderly return of Filipino workers who wish to avail themselves of voluntary repatriation. In a statement, Marcos said the government is already processing over 200 requests for repatriation and ''we are moving quickly to bring them home while others have opted to remain at work.'' ''I urge our fellow Filipinos to coordinate with our embassies in Tel Aviv and in Tehran. Please follow their guidance, inform them of your situation, and do not hesitate to ask for assistance,'' Marcos said. The Philippine government raised crisis alert level 3 in Israel and Iran on June 20, urging Filipinos in the area to avail of voluntary repatriation. Crisis level 3 or voluntary repatriation phase is imposed by the Philippine government on countries with deteriorating security conditions. At least 30,000 workers, mostly caregivers, are in Israel, and more than 1,000 are in Iran. Tensions heightened between Israel and Iran on June 13 after Israel struck nuclear and military targets Tehran with missiles. According to an Israeli military official, Iran had enough material to make 15 nuclear bombs within days. Iran retaliated, then both countries traded missile attacks. The US also bombed Iran nuclear sites on June 21, and Iran thereafter fired missiles at an American base in Qatar on June 23. PH, US sign technical aid deal for Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas Railway
The Philippines has tapped the United States for technical assistance in constructing the proposed Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas (SCMB) Railway project. In a statement on Friday, the US Embassy in Manila said the American government, through the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), inked the Beneficiary Agreement for the initiative with the Philippine Department of Transportation (DOTr) in Arlington, Virginia on June 26, 2025. USTDA's technical assistance for the SCMB Railway would involve transport model development, port-rail integration study, and legal and institutional framework analysis, among other areas. The SCMB Railway is meant to link major ports in Luzon and decongest traffic at the Port of Manila. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the freight cargo railway also aims to decentralize Manila Port and provide the additional transport capacity needed at the Batangas Port and Subic Bay. "As a freight cargo railway, the SCMB Railway is seen to solve port traffic and congestion in Manila Port, while ensuring the timely movement of products to and from adjacent major transport hubs," Dizon added. Secretary Frederick Go, Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs, said the railway project would boost the government's plan of linking major economic hubs under the Luzon Economic Corridor. 'We are grateful for the support in advancing this crucial infrastructure project, which will drive economic growth by improving connectivity between major ports and industrial hubs along the Luzon Economic Corridor. Once operational, the SCMB Railway will attract investments, create new opportunities for businesses, and most importantly, generate quality jobs that will benefit millions of Filipinos,' Go said. Thomas Hardy, USTDA's Acting Director, for his part, said the project underscores the US-Philippine alliance's vital role in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
