NHL trade rumors: Penguins could part ways with Bryan Rust as two teams circle with interest
As the Pittsburgh Penguins want to start a retooling phase, Bryan Rust's name has quickly become one of the most intriguing topics in the NHL trade rumor mill. The 32-year-old winger, known for his consistency and veteran leadership, is reportedly drawing interest from several teams despite being under contract through 2027-28 at a reasonable $5.125 million annual cap hit. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Penguins' Bryan Rust becomes a hot name in NHL trade circles as interest grows from two franchises Bryan Rust is coming off a strong campaign, one that has naturally increased his market value. While the Penguins aren't under pressure to move him immediately, their front office might view this offseason as the perfect window to capitalize on his current form. Given the direction Pittsburgh appears to be heading—shifting toward a younger, faster roster—it makes sense that they'd listen to offers, especially if they help replenish their prospect pool or bring back assets that align with a long-term vision. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman weighed in on the growing speculation during a recent episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast. 'I think there has been a lot of interest in Bryan Rust, and for good reason,' Friedman shared. 'It wouldn't surprise me if Buffalo was one of those teams, too... I would think Columbus would be another... But someone told me that Buffalo was one of the teams around Rust.' The Buffalo Sabres' interest, in particular, aligns perfectly with their current roster needs. After moving JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth, they're left with a noticeable gap in their top six. Rust, with his proven scoring touch and playoff pedigree, could seamlessly slot into that role. More importantly, his presence would add much-needed experience and leadership to a young core desperate for guidance and stability as they aim to break out of mediocrity. On the other hand, the Columbus Blue Jackets also emerge as a logical landing spot. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Rust could bring immediate depth and offensive spark to a forward group that has shown flashes of promise but lacks consistency. His addition to the top six and power play would provide a noticeable upgrade, especially as the Blue Jackets strive to become legitimate playoff contenders once again. While it remains uncertain whether a deal will be finalized this offseason, one thing is clear: Bryan Rust is a hot commodity. Whether it's Buffalo, Columbus, or a surprise suitor, the Penguins have a valuable asset on their hands—one that could soon reshape another franchise's fortunes. Also Read:

Avalanche, Lightning Among Teams Looking to Land 6-Time All-Star
Avalanche, Lightning Among Teams Looking to Land 6-Time All-Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the NHL offseason continues, one of the more interesting names on the open market is veteran Jonathan Toews. Toews is looking to make a comeback to the NHL, and there are already multiple teams being linked to him. Advertisement Toews has not played since the 2022-23 season, but he still believes that he can be productive. Any team interested in Toews would be getting a proven winner and someone who can bring a lot to a locker room. During an appearance on the 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman named a few teams who are expected to be in on Toews. "Jonathan Toews, sounds like it's a couple of teams here," Friedman said. "I think Winnipeg is in there. Think Colorado's in there... One of the other teams I suspect on Toews - Lightning." Vegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel (9) wins a face off against Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews (19) during the third period at T-Mobile Arena. Stephen R. Sylvanie-Imagn Images Any of the three teams mentioned could be a solid landing spot for Toews, especially considering they all made the postseason this past year. Toews may want to play for a title contender and bring whatever he can to a team. Advertisement Toews scored 15 goals and 16 assists over 53 games in his last appearance in the NHL. The veteran likely won't be asked to do too much for any team that he signs with, so any situation could work for him. Over 15 seasons in the league, Toews has recorded 372 goals, 883 points, and a plus-148 rating. His NHL comeback attempt seems to be going well, and he has plenty of teams interested in his services. Insider Proposes Reunion Between Lightning & Former Star
It's buying time for the Tampa Bay Lightning. After winning eight out of their last nine games, the Lightning are in a prime position to be buyers at the 2025 NHL trade deadline. One area that the Lightning should be looking to improve before the deadline passes is their third line. Due to this, in the most recent episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman brought up the possibility of the Lightning bringing back Seattle Kraken forward Yanni Gourde. "I wouldn't be surprised if [the Lightning] add a depth forward, too," Friedman said. "One of the things I wonder about the Lightning, too, and I'm just throwing this out in my head, if they're looking for a forward or a center, we talked in our West about Yanni Gourde. You just wonder, is that a player that appeals to them." Friedman also added: "There would be some romance to it. Remember how great that line was, Gourde, Coleman, and Barclay Goodrow, for the Tampa Bay Lightning when they were winning their Cups. Maybe that's someone they look at. They obviously know him, and it probably doesn't cost them a ton. He's a rental." When looking at the Lightning's current roster, they should seriously consider reuniting with Gourde. It is no secret that their bottom six could use a bit of a boost, and Gourde would give them just that in a third-line role. In addition, his defensive play would make him a clear option for the Bolts' penalty kill again. At this stage of his career, Gourde is still effective in a depth role. In 35 games this season with the Kraken, he has six goals, 16 points, and 58 hits. Overall, with numbers like these, Gourde would have the potential to give Tampa Bay's bottom six some added secondary offensive production and grit. Gourde is in the final season of his contract, carrying a $5.16 million cap hit. If the Kraken are open to retaining a portion of his salary, this is an avenue the Lightning should seriously consider going down. We will need to wait and see if Gourde is once again a Bolt by March 7 from here. Should The Bruins Trade Morgan Geekie?
The Boston Bruins currently do not have a playoff spot, and they are expected to make roster changes by this week's trade deadline. Pending unrestricted free agents like Trent Frederic and Justin Brazeau appear to be the most likely to be traded by the Bruins. However, pending restricted free agent Morgan Geekie has also been creating some buzz. On the latest episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned Geekie as a player to keep an eye on this week. "It will be interesting to see what they do with Morgan Geekie," Friedman said. "There is another year of team control, although RFA... I think there were some attempts to try to extend him this year, which, obviously, didn't happen. I'd be curious to see where that one goes with him." With Geekie remaining under team control after this season, they do not need to rush a trade. However, at the same time, his trade value is undoubtedly high right now. He has played spectacularly down the stretch, posting 10 goals and 14 points over his last 18 games. He also scored a career-high 19 goals this season and has 32 points in 57 contests. If the Bruins want to sell high on Geekie, now would be the time. However, his impressive play and great chemistry with superstar David Pastrnak also help the argument that the Bruins should keep him around. Geekie has been one of Boston's top players this season, so there would certainly be risk in trading him. There are not too many Bruins who are producing as well as him offensively right now. What do you think the Bruins should do with Geekie? Should the Original Six club trade him or keep him around? Vote in the poll above to share your opinion. Are The Florida Panthers A Fit For Seth Jones?
Elliotte Friedman revealed his opinion about the Seth Jones situation on '32 Thoughts: The Podcast'. Usually, as the NHL's best insider, Friedman's opinions come from something he's heard. He thinks that this is a player-driven story and that Jones brought this to the Blackhawks. That makes sense as anyone would rather play for a winning team but hearing that the Hawks aren't rushing to make the move is the strange part. Elliotte didn't stop there. He claimed that Jones would fit in well with the Florida Panthers. He compared it to the situation that Oliver Ekman-Larson found himself in with Florida last year. OEL is a former star defenseman who revived his career there and that included winning the Stanley Cup. This is a good call made by Friedman. The Panthers have elite players all over their roster. There is a reason that they are the defending Stanley Cup champions. Aleksander Barkov is one of those elite two-way centers that you need to win. Gustav Forsling and Aaron Ekblad are high-end defensemen who lead the way on the blue line. Matthew Tkachuk is a high-effort pest-like winger who puts up incredible offensive numbers. In goal, Sergei Bobrovsky is one of the all-time greats. The main thing that Florida can use before the deadline is a right-shot defenseman and Jones would bring that to them. If the Blackhawks do end up moving him, the Panthers would make a great fit. Florida would protect him with good matchups and get him out there when he is capable of helping them. You may see the Columbus version of Jones if he went to play in Sunrise. The Panthers have done a great job of signing their great players to team-friendly deals (relative to what they'd get on the open market right now) which helps them have more cap space to make moves. Chicago would likely have to retain on Jones in a trade and possibly even use a third team as a broker but this deal is possible financially. It sounds like Friedman brought this up as a hockey fit but it makes sense both on and off the ice. If Florida is willing to give something up for the Blackhawks to retain on the contract and give them Jones, this is a deal that could be made. Would Illinois native and current University of Denver Pioneer Jack Devine make sense for the Blackhawks in return? Would Florida give him up? He has been incredible for Denver, who is looking to repeat as National Champions again in 2025. There are other good prospects in their system as well. What about draft picks? The Hawks probably aren't getting a first or second-round pick, especially if they landed a good prospect like Devine but there are still good players in the middle of the draft to look out for. Plenty of teams make sense for this player but Florida could be the ultimate fit in terms of need, financials, and status as a winner.
